Geo Needs to Prove it Next Year

I think Caleb is better right now honestly. Baker may be coming off the bench next year.

Second season where Geo completely vanished for stretches of the season. Maybe he is exhausted, next year will tell with more options at guard. Bottom line, I think its time to reconsider running our offense through him.

What teams have figured out is that Geo is not quick and they can get over the top of screens and get in his face. He can't beat you to the basket off the dribble. So not a threat to get to the basket very often.

If Geo can't flourish at the 2 guard spot next year, I think he should become our 6th man. He has completely disappeared. His shot is terrible right now. And his BB IQ has suffered. I love the kid, but right now, I think he has fallen back compared to our freshmen.

I like Geo a lot. But, maybe he is not the face of the team. You can't disappear for long periods of time and be the man. He needs to improve his lateral quickness and get over screens. If he doesn't improve, other players are going to grab his minutes.

Geo got absolutely devoured by the Penn State kid and it impacted him the through to tonight. He is still being effected by how badly that PSU guard ate him up. Took his brain and his soul. All of a sudden he's scared to shoot an open shot, hesitant to drive, tentative with the ball handling... all because of that one game. It's like golf, where you can't let the previous bad hole, beat you on the next one... get over it and get re-focused. Needs to mature and toughen up here.

Everyone is exhausted at this point. He's just not quick on offense or defense. That is his biggest problem.

I absolutely agree. I don’t think this is a legs are tired thing. I think it’s a mental problem.

Wow. If the PSU kid freaked him that badly then Geo better get a lot mentally tougher.

Based on what? Geo was atrocious tonight but what has Caleb done that you can say he's better than Geo? Caleb had plenty of minutes tonight and needed him to step up. He had 2 FGs and fouled out.

Caleb has shortcomings. He's not great with the ball. He needs to learn how to handle the rock much better. Lateral quickness not that great either. May have more upside the Geo over a career tho.

Hopefully Pike isn’t as stubborn with who the quarterback is as some coaches.

Geo needs to play primarily off the ball

No player should be guaranteed a starting position .This team lack shooters and that needs attention in the off season by recruiting and individual player development.

You guys are tough. He had a few rough games down the stretch, but the psychology stuff from the stands is a bit much.

One thing is clear, the addition of Mulcahy & Young means he will get more time off the ball and should have some more opportunities to catch and shoot or be the recipient of kickouts for the occasional open look.

He’s one of the only players who can create his own shot, but the degree of difficulty on most of his shots is unreasonable and doesn’t help when there’s a dry spell.

its fashionable to say Caleb is better than Geo but its shortsighted. Caleb's role is so different than Geo's....and as we saw tonight when Caleb is forced to play major minutes he was ineffective. Caleb is good in the role that Pike uses him for but there is no evidence yet that he can play 30 minutes a game and shoulder a major cog as a scorer

obviously Geo needs to get better next year. His slump is part of my worry for next year. An ineffective Geo is going to tank progress because I dont see Caleb as the answer either. Mulcahy will not be Big 10 ready so its going to take time for this team to gel.

Caleb is the not the answer. He's limited but an adequate / capable guy off the bench. He's a 10 - 15 minute per game type of guy. Pike played his hand too long with Caleb throughout the 2nd half.

Holy crap, Caleb has a bad game (along with most of the team) and now he is a limited player only good for 10 mins a game. This board is nuts.

The Caleb I watched for most of the year is almost 6'7" had a good ability to get into the paint often, rebounded well, made some sweet passes and was statistically the best free throw shooter and 3pt shooter on the team.

he is not a limited player but you see he is not the answer playing 19 minutes a half either. Its ridiculous to then declare him a starter over Geo. Caleb is very good at where he is right now. His minutes may go up next year but I find it ridiculous to say he should be starting now...based on what? because he can look awesome when he plays 16 min per game

why does everyone make statements like the frosh like they r finished products ? Caleb made great strides this year and because he had a bad game now he is only a 10-15 minute player and that’s it ? The way you guys talk in absolutes is hilarious especially for frosh at the end of a long year .

well people apparently just decided to write Geo out of the starting lineup too

Do you know what his stats were for the 20 BIG games?

33 mins per game.
227 shots at 33% (kiss was 37% on 88 shots. next worse)
33% on 103 attempts ( almost half his shots were 3's)
...which explains why he only took 54 foul shots in 20 games.
11.4 pts per game.

if you round up Caleb's numbers (18min per game) they dwarf Baker's across the board (but no, you can't do linear math).

So it is now what it is. We'll see next year. This year's experiment didn't work. Souf didn't work. Not having a true PG really has been a miss by Pike this year.

Exactly . Is geo an all league player ? Definitely not but he was asked to play out of position and too many minutes this year and lead a bunch of freshmen . It definitely caught up with him at the end of the year but to bury him is ridiculous. Let’s see how he performs next year when he can be more efficient in his minutes and play more off the ball

While it doesn't completely explain his funk the first half, the scorebook shows Geo playing 40 minutes today. Has he played an entire game before this season?

Saw this on Twitter .

In 31 games over the past 4 months + one day, Geo Baker logged 1015 out of a possible 1,240 minutes — 82 percent of available minutes.

it says alot about how Peter Kiss who was being hyped here was a complete bust. Also not helped that Thiam was a complete bust this year. I can guarantee that Pike was counting on them for contributions to fill out the team and they basically gave us very little or nothing in Thiams case save for the Iowa game.

tough to have roster misses when you are trying to get a team over 500....Souf, Bullock, Thiam, Kiss and I am not optimistic on Doucoure but we shall see

Excellent observation and analogy.
Eventually, being unable to go to your left at this level will catch up to you.

I just find it hard to judge from one bad game that Caleb would not be effective 30 minutes a game either. He is still a freshman who played a long season and was playing the longest non-stop stretch all year for him.

Geo has had two full years now, he has had plenty of fantastic moments but he has not yet proven that he should be a 30 minutes per game player that will take his team to the next level. Reduced minutes and playing off the ball more will probably help him tremendously

This off season is huge for this team

yup...these players have gone through the wars this year so they know what to expect..but they have to be committed now

getting the bodies in shape, conditioning, adding muscle, working on their shooting techniques, free throw shooting...and alot of mental preperation..they need to develop a hate for losing

I also think we were expecting just a tad more out of the other Shaq too. But at least he can make his free throws (75%) on 32 attempts. He also avg'd .5 more bounds and 1 pt. more per game in 2 less minutes than Doorson. So hopefully that gets us a bit more down low next year.

Would really be a great year for an over seas trip preseason with the team. Not sure we do that anymore, it’s been a long time since we have.

except for a couple of baskets when the game was all but over,,,GEO was a non factor in this game. We need him to score....he kinda was a "sleep walker" & NEB scarfed a lot of balls from him. I am very disappointed.

Shaq C is so much of a non entity he doesnt get talked about much here...really did not develop this year, he showed signs and then disappeared., He was abused on defense the last 3 games

Joe Boylan said on the On The Banks podcast that he thought Geo's late season slump had to do with him being tired too. So, maybe he just ran out of gas.

82% of minutes played is kind of a lot but it's nothing crazy... 13th in the conference. So I'd wager to say that most schools had a guy playing as much as him.

The issue is when Geo has an off night it tends to be really bad. Since the calendar flipped to 2019 he had only two middling games where his ORtg was between 90 and 104. Six times he was above that (including four in the 120s) but the other ten times he was under it, including seven times under 80.

We need him to be at least "okay" for us to have a shot.
