Golden Al

Bring it on home Pat!

Can you quantify why you want him?

As I said in the other thread.

Recruits will buy what Golden is selling. It would be a very good NAME hire.

Because of the way he was just run out of Miami? That name? And, aside from recruiting, is there any evidence the man can actually coach?? I am pretty sure he proved at Miami that he could not.

He did a fine job at Temple. He walked into a mess at the U. Zero home field advantage with a stadium 40min away from campus. He is a MAJOR step up from Flood.

WE AIN'T GETTING URBEN MEYER RIGHT NOW !

BRING IN AL!

Not enthused with the name but bring in a staff like Aranda or Odom for DC and a Eddie Gran for OC and I'm fine with him. Throw in Locksley as asst HC, not OC, and I'm good to go. Like I said if we don't see the money in the HC, let's see it in the staff. Then I'm satisfied otherwise I'd rather pass.

I can imagine Golden going into a recruits living room...

Golden: Hey kid. I'm the Al Golden. The Al Golden is a great coach. You should come play for the Al Golden.

One week later in the same living room...

Franklin: So I hear you met with Al Golden. Did you hear he just got fired from Miami because he sucks?

Couldn't the same be true for Schiano? People could bring up the fact that he never won at RU and was a failure at Tampa Bay. Nothing against Schiano, but I feel like some people here have unrealistic expectations. He's probably the best realistic option we have.

I think Franklin has his own issues.

The difference is that Schiano turned a 1990 station wagon with rusty brakes into a Toyota Camry, while Golden turned a Lexus into a Toyota Camry.

So the program that Coker & the beloved Cane legend, Randy Shannon ran into the ground was a Lexus when Golden got the job?

And by the way, they cheated their balls off while running it into the ground, so the NCAA could spend YEARS threatening heavy sanctions against the school.

Golden was screwed from Day 1 & never had a fighters chance there.

Now, is he a "great" coach? No, but he is a good coach and I'm a huge believer in hiring guys with head coaching experience. For every Tom Herman (and he has had 1 good year with an inherited roster) there is a laundry list of hot coordinators who flamed out because they just didn't have the ability to be the guy at the top. Unless you're hiring Saban or Urban most coaching hires are a crapshoot. I just don't want to increase the odds against by hoping that the guy we hire can be the Head Coach.

I believe that RU has taken a shot at a guys like Mullen but have been told no thank you because of the national perception of what a mess our Athletic Dept is. I think Golden with a solid staff can be the right guy

Historically, the guy who flames out spectacularly at a high-profile job and then goes right to a new job tends to flame out there as well. See Charlie Weis or Ty Willingham for examples. Very rarely does someone flame at a high-profile job and then kill it in a new spot.

lots of haters...going to be fun when he is hired...lots of reality checking as to this job...people seem surprised...julie could have made this hire too

The sanction threats turned Miami from a Ferrari to a Lexus. No matter the potential sanctions, no Miami coach is "screwed." Golden had top 20 recruiting classes and an extremely weak ACC coastal handed to him on a silver platter and did absolutely nothing with it. No one with 6 guys drafted in the top 100 was given a "fighters chance."

And there it is. Bac's weird Julie fetish knows no bounds.

Bac, sorry to say, but you're wrong regarding JH. She did NOT want Golden here.

You'll know he's been hired when all the Red ties in NJ are suddenly out of stock :)

BTW..he does make my Top 3 realistic list. (FWIW)

If this is who Julie wanted, than I am glad she is gone. I would rather our coach be the 50-50 winner from each game than Golden. He is so bad I dont understand how people think he will win here.
Let's get something straight here with you and some of the others on this board. JH did NOT want Golden here. I don't know where that BS came from, but it was pure BS. JH liked Mullen and Herman and even Jeff Brohm before Al Golden! Comprende?

I'm not sure why you replied to me? I never insinuated Julie wanted him here, I was responding to the guy who did and stated my opinion given that conditional fact.

you misunderstand what I mean....one of the things that got Julie fired was lack of confidence in her being able to make a hire and secure funds. I find it ironic that after so much bluster, the candidates being settled on where the some of the same pool that was being floated when she was here all candidates that don't set the world on fire. I just am not buying into the new Rutgers money doesn't matter mantra that Barchi is trying to throw at us.

I like Golden because he is from the area, has generally been an above average recruiter, knows what it takes to compete at a Power 5 big time school. He had some things working against him at Miami where I believe the fits wasn't right. For Rutgers and where we stand in the pecking order of jobs this is the right choice, we will not get an experienced head coach better than him. We can go the crapshoot route with a very green Ash but that's very very risky and I worry about recruiting with him.

Golden isn't up for other jobs because they might not be the right fit, for Rutgers he is a good fit, stop worrying about what others are doing.

Thinking about Julie, was she set up to foul up the Eric Legrand thing? Why would an AD be calling EL to tell him he will be the speaker for the graduating class instead of the university president or some other academic person telling him?
