If viewed optimistically, one might think it means he saw his competition and realized he won't win the battle. If viewed more neutrally/objectively, it could mean any number of different things and we'll almost certainly never know the real whens and whys of the decision.
One thing we can be certain of is that many here will stake out a speculative and/or rumor-based position and then cling to it tightly. 😃
