I could definitely see the next coach making $2.5-2.9 million, ESPECIALLY if it's Schiano. I think - if the rumors we've heard are true (that he left the Patriots to return to Rutgers, or that he had a hand in organizing Ash's firing/Nunzio taking over as interim coach, etc.), then I think that salary is almost a gimme. It's more than he should be making (as someone who hasn't been a HC in college in 7 years) yet less than an elite coach's salary. I could see all of this as having involved LOTS of deal-making behind closed doors.

Of course, Rutgers being Rutgers, they wouldn't pay anything more than that salary anyway. Thus, anyone hoping to get the next great somebody or an established somebody (i.e. Moorhead at $3.2 million, Rhule at $3.5 million), it just aint going to happen here. Not unless Hobbs has more rabbits he's going to pull out of his hat.

A week ago I would have agreed with you about this but a week ago I would not have expected Ash to be fired this early. Maybe the BOG are as embarrassed by the program as we are. Otherwise they would have kept Ash.

The other major question is how long it's guaranteed. Whoever takes this on is going to want some job security while digging out from the current mess.

Nope. From what I understand Hobbs sold it to the BOG as the AD would pay for the buyout with the AD budget from revenues (ticket sells, beer sales, Big Ten TV money, etc). It was the only way the BOG would approve it. The non-sports side of Rutgers isn't giving the AD a dime. Donations and revenues will lead the way. The subsidies will be eliminated over time (minus student fees and Title12).

Crazy how much coaches make in the Big Ten.

WTF is going on with Tom Allen? Rutgers and MD are paupers. What's the deal in Bloomington?

He was a first time HC, promoted from within - formerly was their DC the prior year. His salary jumped from $500K to $1.8M at that time (with a lot of incentive money), and he's now in his 3rd year of that deal with a 13-16 record so far. I'd imagine that he'll see a big bump with an extension going into next year.

You know, Barry Alvarez may have steered us wrong, but he knows how to run a tight ship. The success that program's had one coach after another is remarkable and all at a relative bargain.

Allen seems to be a good value. Same for Chryst and Fitzgerald. Smith is way overvalued. Jury still out on Fleck, Forst and Brohm. Time will tell on those three.

61% of voters so far think that Rutgers' next coach will again be in the Bottom 3 of the conference in salary.
Well, the poll is to guess what it will be. If the poll was to list what we wished it would be I suspect we'd have a much higher number.

What?

What other options does he have? I'd fire Hobbs for cause if we paid Schiano that in this market at this time. I'd start him at 2.5 tops with clearly defined performance-driven bonuses.

There's no way that Schiano is coming here for $2.5M, and if we're going into this thinking we're going to pay $2.5M for any coach, then strap in for a bunch more 1-4 win seasons.

To steal someone’s post from another thread: I wish I could like this 2 times

Reading between the lines, I think Hobbs was very calculated in throwing out the 4.5MM in ticket revenue number. I believe if he hires a candidate worthy of a big ten program, the school is ready to pony up

$4.5 Mill, right in the middle.

IF Schiano was the best available, I would give him $2.25 Mill, with the old bonuses he used to have (a piece of ticket sales, high APR scores, etc) that could get him up to $4 mill with a 7 win season. 5 year - $12.5 million, with a $3 million or so budget for staff. If it works out, renegotiate in 2-3 years. If it doesn't, we can all get closure without overpaying him.
