Guess we need a Defensive Coordinator

Been saying this for years…………..need a better DL and OL (even with a good QB and other skill positions)

Staying healthy would help - but the defense has been bad all year. The number of wide open receptions for 1st down from a WR just running 10 yards past the LOS and turning around in the middle of the field was maddening. The number of runs up the gut for 10+ yards was also maddening.

I don't know if it was personnel, scheme, S&C, buy-in, or some combination of all three... but the defense hurt us all season.

Even with a 17 point lead in the second half Rutgers fans should have known the woeful defense was going to allow touchdowns which would narrow the lead,In the end it was the offense that went in hibernation not even capable of making first downs .The play calling was too predictable. Kansas State changed their defense by stacking the line of scrimmage with 7 players to stop then run and pressure the quarterback.

The front 7 was completely invisible. We should’ve run some freshmen/sophmores out there (except 2, he’s terrible)

In his post game media talk the KSU coach said they knew they had a speed advantage on the outside corners.
They ran around the interior - dragged secondary defenders upfield and ball carriers just frolicked and scooted in open fields.
Same sort of thing happened in earlier games and KSU saw Washington rip chunks out of RU defense.
RU is kinda slow on defense with available players (some hurting) - tackling was awful.

An interesting new name based on some Rutgers staffers following him...

Rhode Island DC/ILB coach Chris Lorenti.

Lorenti is from the area (Cromwell, CT) and played football at Southern Connecticut St, where he also coached for 12 years before joining Rhode Island's staff in 2020. Lorenti served as the DC at SCSU for 5 seasons from 2015-19. Lorenti recruits the NY/NJ area for Rhode Island as well.

Lorenti just wrapped up his 2nd season as the DC at Rhode Island and his 5th season overall with the Rams. This past season, Rhode Island ranked 13th in the FCS in sacks/game (2.71), 27th in scoring defense (21.93 points/game), 33rd in total defense (335.1 yards/game), 26th in rushing defense (123.6 yards/game), 18th in yards/rush allowed (3.43) and 51st in passing defense (211.5 yards/game).

The Rhode Island defense was the best in the CAA this past season...

Lorenti's defense had 2 1st Team All-CAA performers in 2024, DL Westley Neal Jr and LB AJ Pena. Pena was also a 1st Team FCS All-American.

Can't see Lorenti being the DC. He would be a natural fit to take over LB coach. If he is the choice we have a much bigger problem attracting top tier coaching talent coming to the banks.
