Harrison Hand commits to Baylor

That's a horrible idea

Not suggesting it's wise for a kid to make that one of the main criterion for his decision. Just stating that kids base their decision on their relationship with the coach(s) a lot more often than you might think.

How do you committ to a school you've never visited and only offered you last week?

I get Rhule is the coach and the Temple connection but odd he's never stepped foot on campus.

Because, right or wrong, a lot of kids commit to coaches, and not schools.

He's right. There are other states that have the same problem, Arkansas, Iowa, Illinois, others. The very top players often leave the state for the top SEC or Big 10 schools or Texas

Haven't we discussed how even like half of top kids in places like Michigan and Ohio go out of state? Texas and FL kids are all over the map.

As much as our sad sacks like to say it's a Jersey thing, it's really a kid .. No, human thing. Not everyone wants to spend their entire life within an hour of where they grew up. College is a great opp, for any kid, to try something new.

Wrong. Many of the current 2017 Recruits are going to their In State B1G Programs. At least 5 of the Top 10 In state recruits are staying home : Ohio, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Maryland. In fact OSU has numbers 1 thru 4 and Michigan has the Top 6 all committed. Heck, even frick'n Indiana has 3 committed and one more is very a strong lean.
Don't let facts get in the way of your Post.

I've been in Waco too - it's not the edge of the world but you can see it from Waco
Pretty sure if you use this in print or another form in the media you owe a royalty to Bruce Johnson.

So my statement about half of top kids leaving those states is wrong because 5 of the top 10 are staying in state. Smart. What was that about facts spoiling a post again?

Facts ? The Top Half are not leaving their Home states but staying home !!!!! I wish RU would get anywhere near Half !
Heck, if you trying to rationalize why all { a lot more than Half} the Top Talent is leaving New Jersey you are doing a piss poor job of it. Bottom line it { In State Recruiting }needs to improve drastically. Getting 2 per year won't cut it. Ash needs to better connect with HS Coaches or hire a Staff that can.

Do you not understand how fractions work?

heck, when only 1788 of our nearly 500000 alumni contribute to the BIG fund, the lack of fan support for RU is too obvious even to 17 year olds---why do expect them to be different

Very true, we expect teenagers that grew up hearing from everyone from parents, classmates , teachers and coaches, that Rutgers was a fallback, to suddenly have this rush to commit to us.

It's New Jersey culture and only winning and a broader recruiting net can fix the problem.

I'm glad Hand is going to Baylor, at least we don't need to play him every year

Couldnt get far enough away. We are losing every guy in South Jersey except for the Egg Harbor City guys. This is going to take time just like it did with Greg. I have waited 50 years. I hope I don't need 50 more.[winking]

Baylor had a Heisman trophy winner in the past few years. They had numerous first round draft pick, they are always on ESPN, they have cool uniforms. We lost to Michigan by 78.

A lot of guys were on board until we had the worst season in 15 years. It was the performance on the field that is hurting us now recruiting. It's hard to buy in when you literally don't see a single positive on the field. And yet we still have a top 35 recruiting class. We have nothing to complain about.

The good news is that it is not the BIG. If he gets down there and the bible belt is not his thing and he wants to come home he only has to sit one year. Small consolation but at least it is something.

Thanks Drew. Maybe it was all part of a grand conspiracy.

#FenceTheGarden is embarrassing at this point. Let's drop the stupid catch phrases, get good players on campus and win some games. There is no fence. No coach has ever been able to keep the kids home.

I don't agree with this at all. We've gotten more NJ players this year than I can even remember. 2012 was the last time we got a NJ 4 star when we got a bunch. We've got 2 this year. We're building NJ pride with these kids. I think the classes get even better as the years role forward. We just have to play better on the field.

This BS of NJ Recruits leaving the state needs to stop.
While getting 2 of the Top 10 NJ recruits is nice ( and an Improvement) it still is long way away from where we need to be. To be anywhere near competitive in the B1G we need more Top NJ recruits to stay home.
Heck this year's 2017 Recruiting Classes in Indiana, Maryland, Wisconsin, Ohio , etc. each have at least 5 of their Top 10 Recruits staying home and playing in their state University and playing in the B1G.
We have 3. Lewis is now 9th

The B12 will fall apart very shortly leaving Baylor left out of the P5....UT,Tex, and KU will survive and possibly WVU...Baylor coming off a scandal they might not recovuer from...check out OKIES Landthieves Conference realignment board...the bluebloods ain't happy...

Even if no one else commits we still have a better class than we had in the past 5 years. Considering how horrible we were on the field, this class is pretty good.

Ash has one of the best recruiting classes we've ever had coming off a 2-win season. Untwist your lacy panties and stop whining.

My ongoing questions to this point are, how much of this is the new coach honeymoon and can Ash keep it up for next year?

I think it depends on what product we put in the field next year. We need some positives and opposed to the zero we had last year. We need players to step up. We have a few players who are potential pros including Tariq Cole, Blessuan Austin and Grant. The offense HAS to show something this year.

No they don't. But thanks for the citation.
How many top 25 players in NJ have stayed home since 2010? 2012 was our pinnacle, but before and after --- less than 20%? If they are going to leave, then stop the issue of "we need to recruit NJ". Recruit, but don't let that dictate your success. Pikiell is doing it right by working to get NJ kids to at least consider us, but he ain't waiting for them. I am sure Ash is doing the same and glad he is looking at Ohio, Georgia, and Alabama.

Baylor is in Waco. It is a horrible area. Don't want to hear how New Brunswick is an undesirable area.
And how could we forget other great historical events in Waco, Texas- how about David Koresh and the BRANCH DAVIDEANS
Wonder if any are left and Baylor season. Ticket holders?

Ummmm. Check Iowa's in state recruiting class. Does not support what you are saying at all.

easy way to start that connection..hire someone onto the staff full time from JERSEY.

Does/did Iowa have a Peppers or Rashon Gary type player who stayed to play at Iowa?

Because I think that's what people are saying here.

The fact that hand committed before even seeing the school and researching the school for all of 1-2 weeks shows he is making a decision based on all the wrong reasons..Aka "I'm just gonna follow this position coach even though he just applied for the temple DC job and is looking to leave asap". He probably barely knows or cares any about the academics there, he has no idea what the campus or facilities even look like...But I'm sure there are nice parties there which hopefully don't consist of raping girls, (but how would he know since he hasn't even met one player off their team in person) so good for him!

Frankly, someone who would make a large life decision like that makes me less inclined to want him on my team. As opposed to a kid like bordner who did his due diligence, visited all the schools, sat and hosted all different types of coaches (even hosting the Navy coaches at his house to hear their pitch).

Hand didn't follow Rhule to Baylor so much as he followed defensive assistant Fran Brown. He was the essential character in Hand's recruitment. In fact, Hand was going to commit to Temple on that recruiting weekend right after Rhule to Baylor came down. Temple asked all non-committed kids to reschedule and Brown became the first assistant to cast his lot with Rhule. It was pretty much over for everyone else that day.
