Hey Folks --

Hey Chris - Rutgers has some excellent math classes, maybe you should consider taking one! :-)

"Janarion Grant returned 4 kicks for TDs last year, 3 kickoffs and 2 punts."

I understand the different priorities in a spring game, but wished there was a little more balance. One example, I never heard who the starting DBs and LBs were.

I get the fact that the spring game serves as an informercial for Rutgers football . I also respect Chris coming on here to defend the broadcast. There was lots of good info and interviews last night , which was great. But if you're a fan that actually wanted to watch the game and see how some players look it was very hard. The 'game' was pretty much ignored in the broadcast . There were times when the announcers didn't know what qb was in the game or didn't bother mentioning it . Kinda a big deal because we have a big qb comp going on and many ru fans wanted to focus on how each guy performed.
A fan that concerned with the QB competition last night wouldn't need the announcers to tell you which one is in the game, you would know by the number on their Jersey. I was at game and somehow I was able to figure out which QB was in the game without an announcer telling me.

Really didn't care about the new staff and wasn't impressed by anything they said. Most of it just coachspeak. Wanted to know more about who tackled etc., blocked well etc. Coaches come and go but the players win /lose the games. Tells us more about them.

Terrific turnout tonight at HPSS. Tremendous passion, as always. You guys never disappoint!

Just wanted to clarify about tonight's BTN broadcast -- as I see some were....less than thrilled. Over the years, spring games have become more of a conversation about the program than a traditional broadcast of the game. It really gives us a unique opportunity to go in depth, when normally we wouldn't have that chance. As such, Eric and I spent the evening going through all aspects of Coach Ash, his staff, and the players. If that wasn't your cup of tea, well, I completely understand, and I'm sorry you were disappointed If it were a real game, that certainly would not have been the case.

It's my honor to call the games, one that I'll never take for granted. Thanks guys, for watching & listening, and for your dedication to Rutgers.
Very good perspective and appreciated, makes sense to me.

Very true , of course any fan that is interested in the qb competition would know by the jersey number . The issue at hand is that the announcers completely ignored it !

Hey Chris, I'll own it. I was one of those guys

"A totally revamped offense.

Could have used a lesson on it with talk of each individual players.

Disappointed"

If the MO is less on the in game action, that's cool. I was just hoping for just a tad more in depth analysis being a special year here at RU. No big deal.

Living in Boston now and giving up my seasons after 15yrs due to 3 kids under 4yrs old now, I live for the WCTC broadcast. I never get to watch TV these days. You and Ray Lucas do an amazing job and hope you two stick together on WCTC for decades to come. Again, you and Ray are great. Real RU guys bringing live action into my home.

Thought it was great.

Thought it was great.
I thought it was great also. I disagree with those who say the broadcast was only for the diehard RU fans and should have been aimed to them (i.e. less infomercial-type comments). My hope is that there were other B1G fans watching just to see some football and potential future recruits watching also. They both would have learned something about RU and the recruits about the coaching staff. I would have liked to know who was playing at certain times, but that could have been solved for me if spring rosters had been given out at the game. However, I also realize that who does what in this game really means squat when trying to determine who will end up on the two-deep when the season starts.

Contrary to many posters on this thread I don't listen to the announcers during football games.I turn the sound down quite low so that I can still hear the crowd noise but the speaking becomes unintelligible.I like it that way. Makes it more live game for me in that I WATCH the game instead of having it TOLD to me.BUT different strokes guys,.

What was the attendance?

I agree about constructive criticism, however, there were several destructive attacks on our announcers in that thread, and I stand by my d-bag comment.

Yep, the other thread was filled with d-bag comments - this thread, thankfully, has good discussion on pros and cons of the broadcast with people acting like adults. Thanks, Chris for posting and acknowledging the criticism and explaining your perspective. I went to the game, then watched on DVR and generally had no issue with the human interest angles presented, although maybe a little less of that would work better (however, I can tell the QBs by number).

Chris

You and Ray are my all time favorite announcers for Rutgers football.
Keep up the great work.

"Straight down the turnpike!"

"Big Fatties!"

Ha! Nice job by me.
Whether you like his broadcast style or not, I doubt there is anybody who can disagree that Chris comes across on the radio, studio and here as a nice and stand up guy.

Hey, at least CC took a less confrontational tone than the last time he posted here.

You all remember that- when he told Rutgers fans to "get a life" after the complaints about the "big surprise" at the Ohio State game, which turned out to be Eric and Mohamed leading an RU cheer. Then he sarcastically said next time he'll "do his best" to secure Springsteen or Bon Jovi.

Of course, the thread was deleted after it got ugly, but I have a screen shot of it. I and others haven't forgotten the petulant child that came out that day.

I'm pretty sure, Chris, that the same people who bitched about the broadcast also would have been disappointed had RU done what Nebraska did, letting a young kid w/cancer suit up and run for a TD; spring game's about serious business and getting important reps for the 8th-string RB in crunch time in late April

And now most of us wont forget the petulant child that came out today. You really saved a screen shot of a Chris Carlin post for 6 months so you can throw it back in his face today?

Hey Chris - I also enjoyed the broadcast. And great job with the Eric LeGrand intro - any Big Ten fan watching that was not previously aware of how important Eric is top Rutgers certainly knows it now.

That's what most would think a petulant child would do in this case.

This. The commentary portion of the broadcast is fine in moderation but should not be the sole content in my opinion.
Fans want to hear about the play and the impact it has.
To those making immature, idiotic remarks about posters grow the f up.
Chris C. has delivered his POV and moved on from this thread.

I understand the different priorities in a spring game, but wished there was a little more balance. One example, I never heard who the starting DBs and LBs were.

dear Chris, glad you posted, did not see the other post as I was At the game and then watched it later. Your PR show was grading. But if that was the directive You did what was asked of you.
One comment that I wish to convey regardless of Saturday non-play by play.
You still have dead time and often, over repeat yourself. That said I suggest this as a natural draw for viewers. Everyone want to feel involvement and by announcing 1)the home town and 2)HS and 3)who coached a player is great aid in drawing in viewers. Yes you did it for a few but get it into your lexicon for the season. And any personal note you might have on a HS coach is great to draw the HSHC toward Rutgers. YES this is a very minor points but it will help RU and increase your appreciation. Ex: "HC X. Jones from Rahway, he is great at getting his kids ready for the next level." or ..."Rahway who just won ....' You draw Rahway fans in two ways one the mention of home town and the subliminal complement to the coach or school. Use every gimmick you can.
You could have enhanced the TV experience with play by play with personal notes i.e. great tackle by X. Peters from ...he is completing against Y. Smith from....
there were so many new faces and everyone wants to hear their name on a big play. Many time you and Eric just babbled over great plays, that the players and family and friends and viewers would have liked to hear their name announced. For some that game was their moment of glory. You by decree or choice snuffed their seconds of fame. So in that sense you lost support from the disgruntled folks who want to here a moment of fame for their family member/friends/classmates etc.
As some one else posted most interviews was just "coach-talk" could have been anybody speaking.
Keep up the good work and every step forward is closer to our goals

If the moderator(s) felt that locking that thread was the best course of action, then fine. But deleting it was obviously an attempt to sweep under the rug the ill-advised choice a very visible representative of the athletics department made in attacking the fans.

It ain't about me.

There are some short clips from the broadcast on SK.com and the BTN Video Facebook page.

WHAT??? I had a problem with the broadcast as I stated above. It was the format they chose which I believe was more suited for a 30 days of Spring telecast. Not the spring game with new players, new coaches and new schemes which should have been the focus IMO. Constant cutaways, interviews and talk about anything but the game was not what I expected. And yes I could careless about an 8th string RB because teams don't carry them. But they do carry defensive players and offensive players outside of the QB's and we got nary a mention about them. Then the bolded part, do you seriously believe that or were you just trying to sensationalize your post. Just because others and I didn't agree with the broadcast format, that doesn't make us some type of evil monsters.[devil]

If you are looking for hard hitting journalism that ain't what this is about. This is like the folks that complained when the old "coaches" show during Schiano's era went from being a rehash of the last game and a preview of the next to being all about the players and their personal stories. Every message coming out of the program should be an attempt to connect to future players. It's about the recruits, not fans. If you want snark or take downs there are media outlets prepared to deliver that.

And I'm pretty sure the same people who say what you said are sociopaths with bad breath, flatulence and tiny, tiny... feet.

I hope you get the point.

The game could have been called by Al Michaels and Chris Colinsworth and people on this board would find ways to complain about it.

I didn't get the format at all. Did anyone here really need an infomercial on RU football. What we didn't know is what our team looks like this year. Do to the very limited media coverage. Basic concepts on offense and defense, players playing on the field, who was who, a little bit about each, who made the play. The scrimmage it seemed was an after thought, where as it should have been the main focus. The casual fans aren't watching this scrimmage, those are the one's you target with infomercials. It's the die hard RU and college football fans who care to watch these scrimmages. They want info on their current team. We didn't get that with the constant cutaways and talk about anything but what was happening on the field. This format was more suited for a 30 days of spring broadcast.

sorry I posted without a message! What I wanted to say was that of course no one on this board needed an infomercial. But there are thousands of fans and potential fans who do, and that was the point of the format.

I watched the replay last night. It was fine. The broadcast is similar to an NFL preseason game. It's a scrimmage after all. Those of us who were into the action could actually see the numbers of the player (thanks to the old unis!) and the general BTN viewers got a feel for how the RU program is changing (and hopefully improving).
