Hosting a big man Wednesday

I have a serious question...I see people mentioning Jay Young a lot, and the improvement he is going to get out of the big men. Is he really that highly regarded as a coach, or is it just Rutgers fans hoping he will magically improve all big men? I know he must have had some responsibility in the development of Warney, which was impressive, but what else is he known for?

Coach Young is also the prime leader on the defensive end. Some full and half court presses this year were really well done.

I have to say that all these posts about development and the players we had that were sufficient for RU to win and make the NCAA seem absurd. Frankly, the lists kind of prove the point themselves, as there is just a select group of players over the last 5-10 years who were very good, followed by a list of good to decent players, and then the droves of everybody else who made up of bulk of those teams.

Pikiell and his staff did enough last year to suggest strongly that they can really coach.

They haven't yet shown that in recruiting, but it's way to early to expect them have to. But they will have to recruit much better players at some point or RU will remain in the bottom half of the B1G. Now, the recruiting improvement may be gradual and take time. But it has to happen.

Or they can recruit solid kids and win with them. RU is not a quick fix. No 5-star kid is walking through the door without a supporting cast and even with one, it is hard to see that happening. RU is going to build with depth and development. And the overlooked part of development is identifying kids that fit with that type of program. Before we come to conclusions about what the staff may or may not have shown already, can't we at least see how the guys they have recruited perform? I can tell you they regard last year's class very, very highly and that they think Geo is a potential core player. This staff does not care what rankings kids have. Be patient and trust the process. They have all won at high levels and they will at RU.

Actually I think the variable more important is early in the season vs. late in the season and not as much opponent. Those kenpom top 100 games were OOC.

3 top 100 games OOC (1 Gonzaga, 51 SHU, 63 Vermont) and 4 in conference (81 Monmouth x2, 95 St. Peter's x2).

If you group the 30-game regular season into thirds:
First 10 games vs avg kenpom 183: 11.4 pts (.431 2P, .343 3P), 3.4 rb, 1.1 ast, 1.2 stl, 2.0 to, 0.55 a/t, 23.1 min
Next 10 games vs avg kenpom 194: 13.5 pts (.477 2P, .267 3P), 6.1 rb, 2.8 ast, 1.3 stl, 3.3 to, 0.85 a/t, 33.3 min
Last 10 games vs avg kenpom 203: 14.9 pts (.543 2P, .209 3P), 7.4 rb, 4.2 ast, 1.2 stl, 3.4 to, 1.24 a/t, 32.8 min

Yes, his 3P% fell off as the year progressed... but he improved in several other areas over the same span (2P%, rebounding, assists, assist/turnover ratio).

I think Kiss is a good get - and a year working with this staff, working on S&C, and understanding the role he'll play should help him progress before he hits the court again in 2018.

This is spot on! Don't need five stars. Just consistent top 150 players. Only way to move up. There is virtually no evidence of teams moving up within a power five conference without top recruits. and that means recruiting solid three and four star players.

does mamadou not count anymore or something?

Mamadou Doucoure is a VERBAL commit. Nothing is signed yet. He could still decommit and go elsewhere.
Mamadou is most likely going to reclassify and join us midyear. He's had plenty of time to decommit and hasn't so I'm not sure why people are that worried

Like the KISS signing, this big is a head scratching move IMO, and from CA, sure there's potential with the size, but athleticism looks minimal, and Diallo who at least has experience looks to be more of a big ten player, with more athleticism. again, my opinion.
Mid level D1 recruit, and that's where he's getting interest from. With work maybe he becomes a Big10 level player in a couple of years, but right now he looks slow, tentative, and and not real aggressive. I don't know though how much of that has to do with his injury and his recent growth spurt. I expect we'll be getting some good big men in the next couple of years. Right now I think we would be better off with a more experienced JUCO.

Here is what stands out to me ...positive and negative ...in the limited footage

Negative
-does not yet use 6'10" frame to play above the rim....yet

- He plays like he is 6'6" and isnt used to his body yet. Crouched down like he is 6'5" to get rebounding leverage against bigger kids. Need to learn to play 6"10" and more upright which can be coached and becomes instinctive in time

-get those arms up big fella

Just watched the video and you have read my mind. One of those guys who hasn't had to jump to play.. and thus has a "floor" game. He's like the opposite of a David Robinson who shot up in height late in his youth. He had already developed his game as a shorter player.. thus when he got the added height, it just enhanced his game. In this case, the players height may have limited his development.

Johnson broke his kneecap and missed most (maybe all) of his Junior year. I really like his footwork for a big guy. He may be "advanced" with his feet because he grew from 6'4 to 6'9 since his frosh year and likely played some wing growing up. I think, like Mathis, this is a kid who would have raised his profile a bunch in the summer had he not been coming off injury. I also think kids' who carry 4.0 HS GPAs likely have the ability to "learn" at an accelerated rate on the court.

If Pike accepts a verbal now it means he really likes him (imo). Doucoure and Johnson would be solid bigs (imo)

I don't have a problem with the occasional mid-level D1 recruit - especially a big kid with upside. However, when you combine it with Mensah and Kiss, the picture isn't that great and starts to feel like more of the same. Right now, Doucoure is keeping hope alive but we need an uptick in recruiting. I think if we can grab one more 4-star type kid, things could change quickly. It definitely feels like the fishing net is a lot larger now but we need to catch a couple.

We really need to wait to see how the 2018 class shakes out.
