I do understand that the step up in competition is huge. But others from smaller conferences have played well stepping up. Jordan looks lost on D. Is the NEC that bad?

You would think there is some way to measure the requisite athleticism for high major defense. Some way to test these guys with respect to lateral movement. Maybe there is. But guys like Derkack and Martini do not have the ability to provide much disruption to anyone trying to get to the rim. It’s crazy.

Need to see what Dortch and Grant can do.

again, his brother is a top recruit. that matters to treatment

And Derkack is a better defender than Mulcahy was, but this year’s team doesn’t have other players to play d around him.

Isn't his brother like a three star? Not sure that's a top recruit.
you’ll see he’s a major Rutgers target. Has offer. Currently 4*, #4 in N.J. in his year.

That’s partly why Derkack plays so much.

9 games in, it is obvious that Derkack is overmatched on defense. Quick hands but slow feet. He is playing a lot though because after Harper, Bailey and JWill no one else is playing defense. You can argue that JaMichael Davis is a better defender but he is out of control on offense and cannot finish his shots.

Pretty incredible JMD entered the game yesterday and the second we cross half court, Harper passes him the ball and he immediately goes to the rim. Freaking hilarious

I honestly can’t believe we watch the same basketball

The issue with the defense is most of the guys (martini and hayes are the exceptions , as well as acuff right now, which may be due to injury )…is not grasping the scheme.

The 8 guys I propose have the athleticsm , speed, quickness, cordinatoon and footwork to play good man defense

But …right now …we have guys who can’t see
The Screen coming from the other tram, and when they do…it’s recognized way too late …

How many times do we see our own guys ask each other “where were you on that play “….

A LOT

Derkack didn’t forget how to play man defense . He doesn’t know how to play in pike system

It’s up to pike to get these guys to play his system …or adjust it

This ‘Pike system’ is baloney. He can’t stay between his man and the rim. He’s been taught that since second grade at the latest. He can’t do it at this level.

Maybe the teams in past years retained the prep for the next teams offense. I don't know what they did but they seemed to consistently be aware of what the offenses were trying to do and snuffed it out. We'd see a ton a forced attempts as the shot clock wound down and shot clock violations.

The defense this year feels like there is no prep before the game based on what we are witnessing. Reduced prep? Not retaining the prep?
