I think they're going to to crack down on those WR pick blocks next season.....

officiating was horrible in this game IMO
Probably right, but say it to Referee McBicep's face.

Every team has those route combinations. Those are classic man beater routes. Slant/Slide. If your gonna play man, you just have to defend it.

I was rooting for Clemson but I Hate to see such an important game decided on an illegal play.
Same here and I thought the pass interference call on the play beforehand was weak too. Seemed like the receiver went down way too easily.

I thought the pass interference was before the guy got into the end zone. And the pick play wasn't really a pick. He ran into the guy who was covering him and the guy grabbed him.

If you look at both pick plays, the defenders created the pick, especially on the winning touchdown. On the first one, the defender was holding the receiver from the time he crossed the line of scrimmage. On the winning TD, the defender pulled down the receiver and got in the way of the other defender. I think they were good no calls on both.

That's exactly what i saw. The bama DB to the outside pulled the Clemson WR to the ground and then Renfrow played off the two of them. No offensive interference there.

I hope this doesn't get to many of you guys excited but those are not picks plays but rather rub offs lol.

"...crack down on those WR pick blocks" - ?
they may watch more carefully - and might even look at refining the rules -
- but it will be very difficult to call it a foul on the offense when, in well executed plays like this, against man-to-man coverage, it is finessed so that the defender's intensity is capitalized upon & that defender's immediate engagement with one of the receivers creates the obstruction - the obstruction that gives the other receiver a clear path.

The last play wasn't a pick play. The guy ran a slant and the Bama db grabbed him which caused him to stumbled which freed up the receiver. Watch the play folks
Both the receiver and QB, when interviewed later, said it was. The WR called it a rub and the QB called it a little pick.

Pick and rub routes aren't anything new.

Here's a blog about them from 10 years ago, discussing their use in the old 'Run and Shoot' offense (which itself is now about thirty years old...) of all things: (click)

The DB didn't help things by putting his arms around the receiver. But that only helped the receiver, who was going to try to push the DB backward regardless.

They are all rub routes. RU ran a bunch of them early in the season and then we got called twice for an illegal pick because we ran them poorly.

The pick or block takes place while the qb is running bootleg right, the pick/block occurring BEFORE the ball is thrown. I think that's why it is legal.

The NCAA rules/ref folks this morning said that, like some have said here, the contact was either started by the defense or simultaneously by both players therefor making the play legal. The Bama player grabbing the WR made it impossible to call it a pick/rub play. If there was a penalty on the play it was on Bama.

The above photo proves exactly what i saw live. WR threw a block there and defender did grab onto him as he was getting driven back. Clear is day to me.

The first one wasn't as blatant but also was a pick.

Happy to see Clemson win. I hope we grt some new blood in the playoffs next year.
