Not bashing the Rutgers staff here, just hope someone can make sure this doesn't happen in the future. I was at Saturday's Maryland/Rutgers baseball game and I see a guy with charts writing stuff down. In between innings, I went over and asked if he was a scout. He said he was with Kansas City. I immediately thought he might be scouting Harris. He had NO IDEA who he was. I had to tell the scout about him. I was so surprised that he didn't even know who he was that I forgot to ask what player(s) he was looking at. I know we are probably short on money and personnel with baseball just like everything else, but SOMEONE should have welcomed the guy and given him some information about our players. It is possible he was there to see Maryland players, but even if that was the case, Rutgers has to make sure he at least knows about our guys. Just my two cents.

Twister, I don't know if the staff does, but I am pretty sure we have had players go up there over the years.

I have very little idea how Major League Baseball scouting and college baseball exchange information, but does Rutgers have a list of all the MLB scouts in the Big Ten footprint, and if so, are periodic updates/phone calls sent to them about our players ?

It is also important to have coaches participate as well. Expand their connections with other coaches, expand recruiting reach, learn about talent in other geographic areas. Etc, etc.

The SID(sports information department/director) is in charge of taking care of a situation like this. There is one for the baseball program and they would be the person who dropped the ball. That's how the scouts know when to come for RU's pro day for football, that's who gives TV people background on players and their Bio. ect. The coaches don't do any of that. They have enough to worry about. Somebody in the AD's office isn't doing their job very well.

Husker you may have enough people at Nebraska and enough money to have non coaching baseball staff . I honestly don't know if we have non coaching baseball staff of any kind here. Again, I hope this isn't coming across as bashing our dept just something I hope we can change. I lived five minutes from an SEC school for a couple years and just the little things are obvious to me. Your school is pretty much on their same level but we just don't have so many things you would take for granted.

One of these folks would be in charge of it:

This is part of it:
Athletics Communications

Rutgers Athletics has become nationally prominent while using all aspects of media to help spread the word of its many successes on and off the field.

Rutgers' student-athletes and coaches are regularly featured in various sports media, including newspapers, magazines, radio, television and web broadcasting. Athletics Communications staff members work closely with student-athletes, coaches and support staff to fulfill these many media requests and do so in a timely manner.

The Athletics Communications Office is available to assist you with all coverage of Rutgers’ 24 intercollegiate programs. The Athletics Communications Office is located in the High Point Solutions Stadium lower level press box on the Busch Campus. For information regarding credentials, interviews, statistics, press conferences, etc., please call (732) 445-7028, visit ScarletKnights.com or e-mail the requisite sport contact.

This is probably the guy who is in charge or know who is:
Matthew Colagiovanni

If you have a sporting event televised, and it doesn't matter which sport, you have a SID that handles it. That is where all media get their info on your teams.

Husker thanks. That might be the guy but to show you how messed up things are here one of the people on that list was fired months ago. Maybe we could borrow some of your athletic department interns and not pay them until we get our Big Ten TV money in 2021 !

That job probably falls to a student who's major would involve media relations. I would question their current GPA. Ha

As someone who worked in baseball, baseball scouts are so focused on the upcoming draft during the season, not the draft two years away. I am not surprised at all he didn't know about him because he wasn't on his list to see. Now, he would be responsible to notify his club of anyone who catches his eye that is not on the list. Next season, you will see multiple scouts from the same team scouting Harris.

Just like RBNY I also worked in pro baseball for awhile. Just so you know, the scout probably knows about Harris and may not have felt like divulging his information to you. Your curiosity is his job so he prefers to keep his information to himself. The world of scouting is very close and scouts will share names with their close associates on other teams. It's their way of protecting each other and gathering information. With the year Harris had last year I feel safe in saying all the MLB clubs know who he is. Each scout keeps a future "follow" list and it is forwarded to the Scouting Director. Also, the Major League Scouting Bureau keeps on top of all the schools and sends reports in as well. Word gets around like wildfire about potential prospects. It is really tough to "hide" a kid who can play, especially in a major college conference. It's the scouts job to keep tabs on them, not through the SID, but through the coaches, families, etc. Any scout who relies on information from the SID won't be around long. Scouts and coaches trade information whereby a scout will drop a name on a coach of a kid who may not be a high prospect and the coach will provide the scout information about the kid, his work habits, injuries, etc. Also, if you were talking to the scout during batting practice or when the team was taking infield, you may not have gotten his undivided attention. Those sessions are extremely important to a scout and they need to focus, not chit-chat with fans or parents. Anyway, hope this helps...
