Like many of you, I believe that the Star Liar hates RU football and would call for drastic measures and firings for things which caused barely a ripple at other schools. I would like to see others post stories of these sort of happenings at other schools. I will start with a very tragic story out of sainted Notre Dame from a few years ago.

What would the Star Liar's reporters write if this happened at RU?

They don't hate Rutgers football. They only care about the bottom line and if dumping on Rutgers football is good business, and it appears to be good business for this rag, then their employees will do anything to further the goal of the business. Monahan, Politi and company would sell their grandmas to make a buck for this petty enterprise. So when it comes to Rutgers football and Rutgers Athletics they just fling crap against the wall to see what sticks.

Completely agree. That is why people who claim they have no reason to be biased are missing the point. The bottom line is that Rutgers is highly relevant, and thanks in part to their reporting, highly controversial. Drama sells news and draws attention, so every little thing they can turn into a "scandal" furthers their profit motives. They see every little event at Rutgers as an opportunity to create a story that will be widely consumed, and actively commented on.

This is why refusing to go to nj.com, and instead using other news outlets to get your Rutgers news is so important. You need to take away their motivation. Of course we can never succeed completely, but we can make a dent. I am consistently amazed by non-messageboard Rutgers fans I meet who tell me they will not read the Ledger. There is no doubt they cost themselves a lot of Rutgers fans when they got Mulcahy fired, and the recent "scandals" just cause more and more of us to say enough is enough.

Not to mention they are catering to an audience that doesn't think Rutgers should be spending any money at all on athletics and isn't aware enough of the benefits of Big Ten membership to grasp how that will help solve the problem. They see the subsidy and make the link to tax dollars. We know it's a very twisted, indirect link, but they see it as a bailout of the failed move to the big time. The S-L feeds into that, as this is the Northeast and being rah-rah supporters of a venture not guaranteed to succeed would be poor form, unless, of course, there was somebody you could please with being a rah-rah supporter of said venture. (Xanadu, anyone?)

Do they really hate Rutgers football? No, I don't think so. They are USING Rutgers football for their own ends. As they say in the movies, nothing personal. Just business.

If we ever reeled off consecutive 11-1 seasons about the time we started getting a full Big Ten share, and the public momentum shifted to backing the program, I bet anything they would all start acting like 20-year Scarlet R members.
