get this out of the way, condolences to pike for the loss of his mother but this post will focus on the game.

1) this ones on pike. Him being vehemently against doubling the post all year absolutely killed us today. It is such a god damn simple concept and middle school kids can do it. I need to know pikes thinking on this. @Richard Schnyderite when the time is appropriate can you please ask him his thoughts on when to and when not to double the post from the backside? Its so god damn simple to do. Kids do it in pick up ball at the local Y.

2) the future is extremely bright, we have some young kids who can run and gun and BALL. I know im a broken record but we saw again today why kiss should never take a single minute away from caleb or harper. Caleb and harper are so so so good. Just good basketball players who can do everything. Their growth is going to be so fun to watch.

3) geo tried to do way too much today. I never rip geo but its warranted today. The offense flowed better when he was not out there. He drove to no mans land one too many times. Ball movement when we had to get into the half court shouldve been the play but he just tried to do way too much.

4) we’re at our best when were getting out and running. When we have to get into the half court, pikes sets really arent anything to write home about. It’s more or less a motion offense. When were running which is our best players strengths we get easy buckets and open looks. We need to make it a point to get out and run more.

5) make no mistake, illinois is a good team. Theyre on a tear right now and we just went into their house with a buncha freshman and played a heckuva game vs them. The future is so bright. Calebs ceiling is insane.

He commented on it extensively after Wesson destroyed us, saying double teaming might sound good in theory but it leaves other guys wide open, which is just as bad - seems philosophically against it, even though you see it all day elsewhere, especially in the NBA.

Every team in america at all levels, high school, middle school, d1, 2, 3, alllllllll double the post, except us. If that games at the RAC, he doubles the post because fans wouldve been in his ear

I would rather double team the guy 3 feet from the basket and take my chances with someone shooting from outside the arc then have this guy make every high percentage shot.

This is a simplistic analysis that implies that every team at all levels employs the same D in every situation. He has his reasons and we have a top-50 defense. Not shocked he wouldn't abandon his principles when an under-recruited freshman starts to go off.

It's debatable because Illinois has three guys who can easily knock down the 3. But with that said, the other you do is you play a zone like we did. And when we were in the zone, we were only burned once by Benaszhvilii. I think we should have stayed with that and then switch up on them with man-to-man to confuse them because they are young too. I will be curious if one of the reporters asks Pike why he doesn't double team.

Michigan almost never doubles the post.

False. You can’t just double the post and then give up open shots from 3 to a team that has shooters. Michigan actually did the same thing to Happ today and were fine with giving up 2s

Everyone plays man. Man is man. When youre in man, the backside guard whos covering the shooter in the corner drops down to take the guy on the opposite block, when the guy in the post dribbles out of the post everyone rotates back. It’s literally that simple. It’s really not hard

In a postgame after one of the other games he said he hates doubling because when they pass out of it, the other team gets easy baskets. He said that he wants to be double teamed on offense. Not saying he’s right just relaying.

The stretch when gerogi started going off their 3 point shooters were out on the bench. So that point is moot. Its a matter of pike not believing in it which is dumb

Jay Young is the defensive gameplanning coach for the defense and while double teaming should have mixed up the looks, RU isn't a quick team to get out on shooters, other than Mathis.

Frazier and others would have burned us for 3s instead of 2s, but mixing it up here or there would've been nice to see.

Agree with the recap.....team has to expand the starting of the offense with more than Baker.....Mathis, Harper, McConnell can all help out.....next year Young and Mulcahy can help as well. Not as worried about Geo as much as interior defense on the ball isn't good enough. Need an eraser that can run and jump inside to make it tougher.

Everytime were double on offense we dribble out towards the corner, nothing good comes from it lol. Just stupid

If you executed the double well, the ball is dribbled out, if you do it bad, the post guy, breaks the double with a pass to the corner for a 3. Listen anyone arguing we shouldnt have doubled the post today is insane

Yes, one of their kids was on the bench, but two were still out there who could knock down threes. And btw, Eugene wasn't defending him the whole time. So was Doorsen and Myles. Personally, I would double team and mix it up with more zone and man. I didn't like the adjustments Pike made and I thought we should have played more zone in the second half. So the point is not moot. Pike was looking at it as pick your poison. Two's versus threes. Personally I would have doubled and zoned more. But that's me.

You double the post when you have defenders with the right quickness/length to be able to flash down yet still recover for an effective close out.

we should cut Pike some slack because of the death of his mother but do feel that the staff is a little stubborn in this area and has been burned by it...but in their defense we easily could be burned from the outside in this game.

as for Kiss, some games we will need him, this game we didnt but believe me there will be other games where Harper, McConnell, Mathis are struggling

I thought too much dribbling and getting caught but I felt his overall play improved and he contributed on offense. Again I would have liked him to get the ball to Caleb in overtime but I think we had some different ball handlers..seemed like alot of Montez and Harper late

careful with this....RU can run against Illinois but not against better defensive teams. Certain styles are not going to allow for that. This was a loose fast paced game where certain players looked better but its the kind of D that Illinois plays that led us to be so aggressive.

Illinois is good and getting better, they won the game, we didnt lose it. We have to deal with this program as both of us are trying to get into the top half of the standings[/QUOTE]

Agree with your points. We didn't have the quickness to continue to double the post, although Pike seems against doubling the post. That's why I liked it when he went to zone. I thought our zone was effective the four or so times we played it. Benahzvilli only made one in those four possessions. I wish we stuck with it more throughout the second half.

In theory giving up open three looks will hurt you, but when you give up 40 you double

Forget about double teaming he barely played Doorson and Johnson in the second half. Also when they were in they were poorly prepared as he is a lefty and can only go left and they gave him the left side all the time instead of forcing him into the middle and his right hand

I coach high school and we never true double the post but we will hard pinch down when the team has a good post player . We will pinch or dig as soon as he puts ball on floor and try to rip it . Woulda been nice to see some pinches down once he got going to give him a different look

Tks for sharing.

You might be against doubling the post, but when a guy is single-handedly destroying us, you do it. You have to adapt and take your chances.

Lunacy is doing the same thing every time and expecting different results.

I am wondering if it would have been better to pull Eugene in favor of Myles....Gene struggled today, he was not an offensive option and I didnt think his D was all that great today. Still I am not sure anybody could have stopped Georgi even if he was triple teamed
I thought the same thing. Johnson’s length and wingspan may have been enough to negate some of Gorgi’s scoring, especially if Myles could have blocked one of his shots. Gorgi was just too confident and comfortable against Gene.

Sometimes, you have to change things up on a game-to-game basis, because what works in one game may not work in another, even against the same team (player's get hot, slump, etc.). What we were doing today defending Georgi just wasn't working.

Nah, we needed to do that against Pardon the first time we played NW, but nothing happened

You were defending to your Captain but the floor on the play raises this legit point

I thought we had 20 fouls to give on him and we needed to use them more and get him off the low block...and out rhythm

Giorgi was I think a 61% ft shooter coming and made 7-8.....go figure...he had a Big 10 player of the week game

Was Doorson more effective against Giorgi than the others? It seemed like he was. Maybe he should have had more minutes in a game like this. Not like Shaq C was scoring in the post.

No, Doorson was getting schooled by Georgi. Could not handle his quickness.

No doubt, after Georgi hit like four shots in a row, we should have tried to mix in some doubling.
