Getting to be that time of year. Michigan (NT), Michigan St (LB) and Illinois (DE) all have lost key defensive players for the year with knee injuries. Part of the deal. Hopefully RU stays pretty healthy through camp, it's unusual to get through without losing someone for a while.

Maryland lost a starting OLB for the year with an ACL.

Illinois DE Jihad Ward had minor knee surgery and is expected to be out only the first 2 games.

Harsh to say it, but that's why you got 85 on scholarship, and having quality depth separates the big boys from the rest of the pack.

I don't think there is any other sport that has the potential for injuries before you even get to play a regular game. No way around how tough this game is.

Teams are also training wrong. They have players builidng a lot of muscle mass and slow-power (concentric-focused training). If you put 40 lbs on a guy by doing slow lifts to develp muscles. The eccentric stresses and development are missing (especially with no cantct practices). Stanford's S&C has changed all that and reduced injuries over 80% in 4 years. He makes sure muscles are "long and lean and relaxed, as opposed to compact, tight and powerful."

He doesn't focus on having players lift record amounts of weight.

"The most unique aspect of the Stanford strength program is its focus on isometric and eccentric exercises. While other college football programs and weekend warrior weightlifters focus on the force-delivering or concentric aspect of a lift or exercise (rising out of a squat or pushing up the bench press bar), Turley preaches the control of the weight. This increases stability and durability of the muscle.

Concentric-focused training is power-focused and creates great numbers in the gym, but it puts athletes at greater risk of injury."
