Interesting article on Coach Vince Okruch

Thanks for posting Abro. Good piece.

We had layoffs at my company Monday and Tuesday this week. Thankfully I still have a job. For the past month or so, I've been thinking about having to find a new job, and hoping I'd have money to pay for the kid's Christmas presents. I've had friends in their 50's that went through exactly what Coach O. went through. He aptly described the emotions in the article's narrative. Spot on, on the job search thing.

Nice to see that he really loves what he does. (VERY important component of one's life that I was late to realize.) I don't, and can't wait for the day (which will never arrive) when all I have to do is drive people around, clean the house, and then figure out what to do with the rest of the day. He's also lucky that his wife works. I'm "sole bread winner" (not because I want to be), and I was looking into the abyss the last couple of weeks. I feel bad for my co-workers that were not as fortunate as I.

We are in similiar situations. I am now the sole bread winner, w a son in college, My wife had a good job (VP at an Insurance company ) quit to stay home when my son was young as our day care situation wasn't good. Got into a routine and never went back. I'm in a volatile industry where layoffs always a possibility, and have survived about 10 layoffs in the past 15 years. Just hoping to hold on til my son graduates, then I will retire. Fortunately we refinance about 14 years ago and the mortgage is paid off this fall. Now I worry about my 401Ks with the crazy stock market sinking. ugh.

But yes, coach Vince's remarks are dead on about the changes in confidence and optimism
when losing a job, I have lots of friends who went through exactly what he did. Fortunately he is back doing what he loves. Most aren't as fortunate.

Unfortunately, age discrimination is pretty bad in the U.S., but unlike other forms is not as widely discussed. Also, very little to no help in getting re-trained as no one wants to bear the costs. For the younger folks out there ---- save early, save often, and reduce the debt as quickly as possible.
