Interview with Nigel Johnson

Each time I read an article like that I find myself thinking that perhaps we can have a 1988-89 type of season where we emerged from the depths of the 3-year Littlepage error to win the A-10. Of course the Big Ten is a bit better than the A-10 was that year and winning it is extremely unlikely but being able to take a huge step forward and make it to the post-season would be a great achievement and wake up the echoes.

"He is going to rebound the ball, score the ball, he has great hands. Once he touches the ball, he is going to catch it."

wasn't someone on here spouting off about how gettys has terrible hands?

Every year I try to avoid the hype and the "oh its different this year". And every year I start to get excited.

I tried to stop myself this year after seeing how bad and how far this team had to go. But this article pushed me over the edge ... I'm officially super excited and optimistic about the 2016-17 campaign !!!

Yeah, this UNC-Wilmington fan...

Good luck this year. I hope Getty's can give you something. However, he is not athletic, isn't mobile and has terrible hands. Can't hit a wide open layup unguarded. He only played the time he did because he was in constant foul trouble. He can give you fouls and block some shots, but you can expect little to nothing on offense. If he gets fouled, which is rare since he doesn't know how to draw contact, he is a good FT shooter.
Could be that working in a slower paced offense will help, and he is a good passer. But he has no idea how to post, and no idea how to score in the post with the exception of a wide open dunk.
Just sayin', don't get your hopes up. Truly hope i'm wrong, but he was at UNCW 5 years and didn't look any better his last year than he did his first year.

so basically sour grapes

I guess we will see if it is sour grapes. I hope it is but if you look at his numbers from last year it doesn't look like he was super productive and it wont get any easier for him playing in the BIG 10.

true but as crazy as it sounds maybe he got an upgrade in coaching (yes I realize his team was an ncaa team). Our big man coach seems to be a real specialist in improving guys. That seems to be the area we are seeing the most progress this offseason

Just having a team in better shape and a full roster gets me excited. And hopefully Freeman has big year.

With Gettys, I don't think the issue is his hands, it is his propensity for foul trouble.

That. If Pikiell said that he has good hands, that is huge. I watched film of Gettys and he was really adept in the pick and roll. I know Coach Young does a lot of work close to the basket, and make sure the guys do not bring the ball back down-just got back up.

Gettys has to stay on two feet, and not go for the block. If he does this, we are a 15-16 win team this year.

I really think he can be an 8 and 6 guy at least if he does not foul. There are so many variables, but his play is interesting.

I would be thrilled if CJ produces 8 and 6 which means he's playing more and hacking less...and what an amazing late pick up he would be. We will need minutes from CJ as Pikiell said he needs to manage Shaq's recovery from his foot woes.

I think he is going to be held accountable, because right now CJ is the starter and Shaq is the backup. Shaq had a year off from playing basketball, but has the potential. A lot of Shaqs recovery is what is happening already, taking excess pressure by weight loss.

It is very important CJ stays out of foul trouble.
