Is it time to reconfigure the so-called Student section?

Some OK ideas in this thread, but boy are we overthinking things.

99% of it is the product on the court. Forget about free hot dogs, DJ Yoshi and T-shirt launchers. Win, and they'll be there. See "Schianoville" if you don't believe the students will show up for a winning program.

Happily, we seem to be on the right track with the current staff.

Would be interested to know how the capacity went down from 9,000 to, at last count, 8,000.

Some possibly erroneous ideas:
  • Some ambiguous "fire code" explanation officially dropped capacity from 9,000 to 8,750 at some point in '90's
  • Replaced the molded bleacher type seats in what is now 111-116 in the early 2000's w/ cushy seats w/ backs like 101-106
  • Replaced the student endzone bleachers (used to also have molded bleacher seats) and removed the lower section behind the basket where band used to sit
  • Created more space in that area, allowing for more of a barrier after 1995 student protest and to accommodate the 75 cheerleaders/dance team members (my exaggeration)
  • Removed some capacity from 118 this year to make room for floor seats
  • Row 1 of bleachers behind benches used to be available for seating, I think, although I'm not sure how you could possibly see anything sitting directly behind the teams. Now impossible due to fence/barrier installed.
  • The original 9,000 could've just been b.s. because it sounded like a good, impressive round number but was actually less.
  • Those guys that broke into the RAC on 11/11 stole Section 107 because it's missing from the RAC Seating Map. That was must be the high value athletic equipment the police were referring to.

The. Big one was the benches behind the teams and scorers table replaced by wide seats

That was 600-700 lost seats

Just a start, but I'm trying to constantly rally my friends to get to games. Got 7 people for the Morgan State game so far....so at least 8 more students will be in the student section!

Some fresh ideas wouldn't hurt. No guarantees playing in the B1G. Winning program means over .500, right? Getting students to the games helps us make the program a winning one. Student presence important for recruiting, too.
