I have never been to a game live, but I actually watch field hockey when it is on TV. Don’t know why it is not a bigger sport-a lot more action than soccer. In some countries, guys play it too.
Probably in most of those countries, it's actually only the guys that play it. And in all or most of said countries, it's referred to as just hockey (no 'field') because they don't play ice hockey so there's no reason to make the distinction.
One of my cousins who lives in England has played it there throughout his childhood and school days, and he still plays on a club team as an adult.
