Got some go-to places you spent time at? Some favorites? Some lame-ass calories-only places? What's your history while at our beloved university?

Our freshman year we literally got pizza every night at like 11 PM from Teresa's.

And I do mean EVERY night. They knew us well.

Tido & his Junkyard Dogs
Cool Runnin's
Grease Trucks
Noodle Gourmet
Giovanelli’s
I's Cafe

A couple of my friends started up KBG a few years back.

The Ledge for excellent slices at the Off Campus Student Center
Skinny Vinnie's
Patti's, which ironically I went grammar school with the owners daughter and I kid you not her name was Patti Patti.
Easton Spa
Greasy Tony's
Little Teddy's sub shop
Stuff Yer Face
Cluck u, whose owner Rob is a big R U fan and great guy and now owns the Silverball Museum in Asbury. I love heading back to Jersey to go there plus many other great old spots like The System and these are just a few great reasons why I am still a Football Season ticket holder 800+miles away.

I didn't go to RU, but spent plenty of time in NB when I was home from school. So... Greasy Tonys, Stuff's, Willie's Wings (was on Commercial Ave., best wings ever), The System.

Also I ate so many meals at the Chinese place in the college ave student center. Chicken filet garlic over rice. Nothing in the student center now comes close.

My #1 place was the pizza shop at the Livingston Student Center. Used to get a large cheese for $6. Made 3 or 4 meals out of it. Also StuffyourFace, Teddys Subs, Dunkin Donuts in HP, Diner on Easton (Sunset?)

Fillipos was a staple at our Newell apt. Not to proud to admit that there were a few times my roomates and I would go dumpster diving to collect the coupons off the pizza boxes. There was one place I forget the name that gave you a free pie for 10 coupons. It never took long to find 10 empty boxes.

Post college, when I owned a house on Guilden St, I ate dinner every night at Pattis.

Pattis, Greasy Tony's, Two Bits (a little sandwich shop on Easton Ave), Walt's Tavern (for containers of beer for take away).

I can't believe nobody brought up Tastee's, Trattoria and Old Man Rafferty's. Somerset Diner was the bomb as well. Giovanelli's was great but whenever I went there, the staff was too busy flirting with female students instead of taking my order. It was no different when I took my wife there right before the Michigan game last year.

For me Patti's Pizza (now Olive Branch) was far and away my number 1. Olive Branch pizza very similiar.
2- Greasy Tonys (which I think was Genos Hamburgers) before that.
3- Tumulty's Pub (original location) when I had some extra loot.
4- Somoygi's Bar (father of RU legends John Somoygi and daughter Kristen) for beer and burger.
5- later on Cluck U
6- Somerset diner

I was on campus from 1971-75, and then lived in NB from about 1980-85.

System burgers from White Rose!
Tastee Subs,
Fillipos $4.00 pies at .50 a slice .25 for tip each.
Neilson Dining hall

Atomic Wings, and there was a barbeque place between college ave campus and cook.

Cluck-U chicken...didnt the chicken get into a fight once? And the paper reported the chicken beat someone with his wings?

Brower, Cooper, and new Busch dining hall when it opened.

Theresa's, Skinny Vinnies, Patti's, Monte Carlo (when on Busch/Livingston), Stuff yer Face, Cluck U, System, Tumulty's, Old Bay, Sub Shop on Somerset next to the old NJ Books (can't remember the name!), Shelly's (ice cream place where [I think] Noodle Gourmet is now), and what we used to call the New Delhi Deli on Commercial Ave (corner of Commercial and Comstock).

Sanctuary and Hansel and Griddle were my go-to spots. I also went to Neilson an Cluck U (before it closed) pretty often.

At cook, ate at Nielson freshman year, stole a turkey at thanksgiving. At newell, cooked an also ate fillipos, greasy tonys, and stuff your face.

Sometimes when hungry as freshmen, we would wait in hallway, ask the delivery guy who the pizza was for, say that it was us and pay and tip him and eat somebody else's pizza. I know a hole move!

Greasy Tony's was in the former Carroll's (long defunct hamburger chain) building . Before that, he had been on the other side of the street. That became a Tico Taco.

The Ledge made a great Chicken Salad Sandwich .. Skinny Vinnies for Pizza .. Grease Trucks for late night food .. Thomas Sweet for Ice Cream .. Once a month my girl friend(now wife of 27 years) and I went to Tumultys I almost always got the pub dip .. wedge of iceberg with French dressing ...

RU Grill was a staple for us on the way back to the apartment from the bars. PJ's to a lesser extent as well as the grease trucks. Thomas Sweets was an occasional visit for us. We hit most of the other places around town but none with the frequency of RU Grill.

Fast forward a few years, my wife delivered our baby in October at St. Peters and I would walk down Easton Ave to get us dinner so she could skip some of the hospital meals. We both enjoyed the concept of that Cookie Rush place but unfortunately we didn't think the cookies were all that great.

  • Jimmy's on Easton Ave. Probably ate my weight in fat sals..
  • TaTa's Pizza, which was across the road from my apartment.
  • Southwest Burrito. RIP/never forget.
  • Makedas. RIP as well.
  • Pad Thai in Highland Park.

The $1.79 subs at MV Deli on Easton Ave. were our primary means of sustenance during our time on the Banks. I shudder to think what was actually in the sandwiches they sold for that price!

3 The Ledge

There was a guy who had a hot dog truck for years on University Avenue at the entrance by Boyden Hall . He had the whole area to himself, good food, low prices, was friendly, and did a GREAT business. I ate there at least three times a week.

Went up to $2.50 in the late 90's. You could two meals out of one those subs.

Greasy Tony's, White Rose, Patti's and I think it was Clancy's Sub Shop on Somerset.

Tumulty's on occassion, Old Queens for pizza

Regularly went to Coffaro's on Somerset St. All you can eat pasta on Mondays (?) for $3.95. At one point I told Gabe, the owner, that his plates weren't big enough and asked if I could get the pasta in a bigger bowl so I didn't have to wait for refills. He came out with an Italian dough mixing bowl. Perfect size! Once had 1-1/2 dough mixing bowls of pasta.

Classic college loser move!! (I say that admiringly, of course.)

Didn't go to Rutgers, but here are some places I remember eating/drinking while visiting friends:

Pattis
Tumulty's Pub
Stuff Yer Face
Little Teddy's sub shop (maybe it had a different name back then)
Olde Queens
Knight Club
Some hole in the wall bar on a side street that I don't remember the name of (but I think it is Kelly's now)
Student Center Pub (even though I wasn't a Rutgers student, some how I managed to get a pub card)

I used to work in the Rutgers Pub (Rusty Screw Tavern) downstairs in the College Ave student center. I ate MANY meals in the pub snack bar.

When I worked on College Ave in the 70's used to go to MV Deli for pork roll (aka Taylor Ham) and cheese on a hard roll all the time. The gave you enough meat for two sandwiches.

Sanctuary (Buffadillas for days)
Hansel n Griddle (Popcorn Buffalo Chicken Crisps for days - you can see a trend here)
Jimmy's Pizza (best chicken Cesar pie in New Brunswick)
East West Grill (was right next to my house on Hamilton Street where the old Sanctuary used to be, Arizona Iced Tea Cans for days)
Thomas Sweets (milkshakes only)
RU Grill had the cheapest pizza for NFL Sundays

Trivia. Which of the above had a sign that said "Forget the rest, we are the best." Source, you can't play.

Carroll's always had stale buns. The one in East Brunswick next to the Rt.18 drive-in was the same way. At least they were an equal opportunity food poisoner.
