Jacob Young appreciation thread

Had some moves that reminded me of Corey Sanders. And his speed is unreal. If he can keep those passes up against teams with taller trees inside he will be a massive impact player. May have shed a tear

He can take over games against bad teams and that's essentially what he did tonight. He can also make a difference against good teams given that he's a straight up hound and our best on-ball defender guard, one of the only two who can really be trusted to guard a good quick point guard.

He hasn't played smart offensive ball so far but tonight he seemed in control even if his decisions weren't always the best. Maybe a long leash helps.

I admit this is all a bit backhanded as compliments go.

He has little trouble getting to the rim, he just has to be under control. No problem tonight.

As the announcers said, the emergence of Myles is paying dividends for JY too, as teams have to respect Myles, leaving more driving lanes open, especially if Myles steps out a bit during a JY drive, pulling his defender with him, making for easier shots for JY (and others). Nice how that works, lol. Definitely JY's best game against a team not named Caldwell. Great to see and hopefully those calling for his head will see what he can bring to the table, in addition to his great defense. It's not that he hasn't deserved some criticism, but at times that criticism was way over the top.

Not to get too technical but we eventually ran the Corey Sanders offense in the very late stages....Young isolated at center court, two bigs step towards the 3 point line to screen...Young takes off around the screen by the big, out of control at bit, but the big has no chance to get to the guard, if he doesn't know which way Young will go.

Once they run variables off that set with Harper and Yeboah as the screeners, eventually you can pop Harper or Yeboah for a pass back, if the defensive player tries to protect the rim.

It's a simple safe play that eliminates decision making and turnovers because Young is aggressive and will at least get a shot up, you crash the boards if he misses and a shot is better than a turnover.

He was just trying to do too much to make an impact and some people here lost their minds and called him a bum. Other guys where making the same or similar mistakes but any mistake by Young was blown way out of proportion.

With that said....he plays fast and aggressive, so there will always be times when he will still make some WTF plays. His Defensive pressure is really good.

Great defender and fastest guy in a long time. Everybody forgets he sat out a year and trying to fit in. Nebraska beat Purdue and took Indy to OT.

Seems to have realized that he is not a jump shooter but most games is the quickest player on the court and can drive for a much easier shot.

Quickest guy in the BiG 10. Keep playing fast but under control and he will continue to be an impact player. You can see the difference already this year under Pike. Well done.

Just hoping the last two games against less than great teams morphs into seeing the same with tougher teams, Should get the answer with the next game.

Yes, Young played well in relief of McConnell, who was only 8-8 with a few rebounds and a few assists. That is hopefully going to carry us while Geo is out. As Lefty used to say, the best thing about freshmen is that they become sophomores. Maybe that was a one-off for McConnell. And maybe a harbinger. They both average around 8 per game, but Young shoots 39% and McConnell 52%.

Loved when Young went in and grabbed a rebound and put it back on a missed free throw. Hopefully he continues to bring the same energy and control with the ball going forward.

The results might be better. That being said his first instincts are to take it himself instead of seeing the floor and deciding what’s the best scoring opportunity.

It's the new haircut!

I hope he keeps trending in this direction. :Rutgers

I knew early on he was trying too hard to show what he can do and also that it takes a while to shake of the rust in games. The extended playing time gave him the opportunity to show his talents and not try to do too much. Same as Caleb but very different players. This team is really made up of a nice blend of varying talents.

I know it sounds cliche, but certain players are more comfortable playing against similar athletes. Instead of thinking the competition in the OOC, would mean Young (& Mulcahy) would be worse, Young specifically has been better vs MSU, Wisconsin, Seton Hall and now Nebraska.

Take the Lafayette and Caldwell games out of the equation. He is still quicker than a good number of guards and creates gaps in the defense.

Also true. Early games we played featured full lineups of smaller and quicker players which took away his edge offensively but he still factored in defensively.

McConnell has more than a few rebounds and assists. He was 8-8, 2-2 for 20 points and 5 assists and 5 rebounds. In my opinion, despite huge games by Jacob and Myles, McConnell was the player of the game for us as he not only produced at a high level, but he led the offense in Geo’s absence.
