Jeff Tedford Would Be a Home Run Hire

Terry "Peter Principal" Shea would have been the best QB coach Rutgers ever had.

So no West Coast guy need apply? We don't need any stinking Bill Walsh, Pete Carroll, Chris Peterson or David Shaw around Piscataway.
You both miss and make the point.

THOSE names could recruit here.. "Tedford" cannot.. at least not without a long "getting to know you period".

Remember. its not like we have a cooperative media rooting for us to succeed. Any other flagship state U's new hire would get the state's network TV news shows to cover it and spread the word about the great hire... then the newspapers would have to follow their lead because TV works better and if you have positive news coverage but negative or neutral newspaper coverage then the TV would win out in sheer numbers.

But here.. the TV stations would ignore it with barely a mention and the newspapers would set the standard and that standard is to slam Rutgers every chance you get. No matter who we hire the bigger newspaper story will be "why are we wasting so much taxpayers dollars on a coach when we could either drop football or move down to the Patriot League."

So a new coach hire has to recruit on his own.. BATTLING the media. The media is an obstacle... one more challenge for a new coach.

Aside from "Schiano", what coach is coming to Rutgers for what we will realistically pay that wouldn't need a "getting to know you period"?

That is why you get a coach with a system. Competitiveness and upset wins are going to improve recruiting. Not a "name coach" that is never going to come here.

I don't want to intrude into the conversation, but I think the point was that, under your standard, we wouldn't have hired any of these fine coaches even when they were new, and so you would miss out on their potential. I also think, as the poster below says, that it is completely unrealistic to think that Rutgers would pay for the kind of coach you want, nor that any of the coaches you want would want to come here anyway.

Les Miles would probably if we paid him. He's rumored to be interested in KANSAS.

This thread has found a life of its own amongst cal boards, as if it’s a real consideration

Absolutely. Maybe he was past his prime for P5 coaching. He had a heart issue when he went to work for Lovie at Tampa Bay. He is "home" now in Fresno, so it is doubtful he would come out East. But, his turnarounds of both Cal and Fresno State are impressive.
It is fun to see Fresno have success and thinking back to the Pat Hill era.
