Jeremiah Williams has to be the biggest disappointment this season

This guy was supposed to be the captain, a leader. A defensive stopper. A guy who could get downhill. Instead, he has been a fouling machine and last night was a turnover machine. He has taken himself out of games with fouling, has the ball in his hands way too much, is not that good on defense, does not add anything in terms of rebounding. Huge disappointment.

He is always falling down. Maybe he needs new shoes?

Williams was much better last year, he has regressed.
Not really. He wasn't very good last year, he was just better than what we had. He's actually shooting better (but less) this year (career year for him!), and rebounding pretty similarly. He does seem to be turning it over a little more, which is weird since he should have the ball less.

He's a poor fit off-ball next to an elite PG like Dylan.
Ball dominant 25% 3pt shooter

In the off-season I questioned if just default handing him a starting spot was the right decision.

His role this year would be different with Dylan as the primary facilitator.
Last year didn't matter. It was how well does JWill skill set fit into the expected role.

Clif was a good defensive center. But if the expected role turned into stretch 4 wing 3pt shooter - he'd be a bad fit.
Or Mulcahy - potentially moving off ball before he transfered.

I posited that our success would be inversely related to JWill playing time.

His numbers are actually pretty solid on paper but there are freshman/sophomore level mistakes that shouldn't happen for a senior with his level of experience and playing time.

I am not sure what the reason is, but sometimes players are judged for how they close out their careers or in big moments. To be fair, JWill has had game changing performances in spots.

He's got 12+ games of the B1G season left to show what a senior is supposed to look like on and off the court. Some seniors in past years elevated themselves when it counts and others leveled off or faded out. The rest is up to JWill in terms of writing his own path. He is approaching a full season worth of games since playing last February. I think his numbers are in line with what he did before and it's a step up in competition coming from a Temple/AAC level program.

@Richie O could provide better insight.

I 100% believe that JWill (facilitated by HC Pike) hampered our transfer portal and roster building results.

If the pitch was "We want you to start next to Harper and Ace. Be an outlet when the defense collapses on them and take 6 mostly wide open 3pt shots a game. Lead the lead in 3pt shots" I think we get a much better player than Hayes or Acuff to play 3rd fiddle to Ace and Dylan.

Reportedly one transfer wing target (Jones?) specially mentioned role as a reason he moved on.
There should have been no question about role.

i am a believer that multiple players on the roster who were either recruited or retained hampered our transfer pursuits because of pre-promised roles

i think sommerville/ogbole presence limited the willingness to pursue a big man and i think williams and davis returning hampered our openness to finding real wing/guard help because we could not promise anyone a prominent role

Wasn't a fan of the left handed shot at the rim (miss). Could be wrong, but it didn't look like he needed to use his left.

Didn't like him pulling the trigger on the 3 early in the shot clock and it came off of the 1st pass of the possession.

His drive down the right side in the 2nd half was terrible. He just threw up a crappy shot. Zero passes in that possession.

He frustrates me because he is a player. He tried to do too much and it blew up in his face last night.

He had 3 or 4 really good games in a row last year until our opponents figured out who he was. Then he regressed and it has continued throughout this season. When Derkack, Davis and him are on the court at the same time, everyone just seems to spin aimlessly in circles.

Well with the exception of a few brights spots the whole thing has been pretty disappointing. VERY disappointing but I am not completely surprised although I thought Pike had finally put a complete team together.
Lots of people now claiming they saw these misses coming haha. As usual. But then again here at Rutgers hope springs eternal and then reality smacks us in the face.

What sucks is there was no reason for him to play so out of control last night. Never like we were down by 15 pts and needed some crazy baskets. For example, that last TO, where he was pounding the floor, why did he have to be so out of control then? Even if he had a B or heck a C game, had really work to limit the TO's, we have probably a win.

I admittedly was optimistic about Dercack and Acuff... I think anyone on here stating they KNEW they would not pan out are lying or full of it or both. Dercack and Acuff were sought after portal players by numerous P4 schools so I can overlook those.

Hayes and Martini were head scratchers... I never understood the hype for a guy who averaged barely 10 points a game on a bad WCC team a was a D2 player before that, and a role player on a Ivy league team. Nobody else was knocking down the doors for those two.

Williams I was never on board with and as many have stated was fools good last year on a bad team for exactly FOUR games... he has been disappointing to unwatchable since then

Williams is another mid-major player brought in who Pikell thought could play effectively in the B10. Wrong.
I mean he came here from Iowa State. And was going to Illinois until they got caught wind of him potentially being tied up in the betting "scandal" there.

Any idea what role he was being brought in as at Illinois?

As with most things this year, I blame the coaching staff. There are no defined roles (Williams included). Pike is not getting these players in a position to do what they do best and ... more importantly, he is not preventing them from trying to do stuff they are incapable of doing. This team looks like a an AAU team where the coach just rolls the balls out at the start of practice and then collects them two hours later.

as the saying goes, “don’t hate the player, hate the game”, or more specifically, the team dynamic.

Players’ Coach Pike doesn’t instill discipline or exact accountability. His manner of coaching has always been to allow players to showcase. It’s mostly streetball/freestyle. That’s the recruiting pitch and the hope is that talent will prevail.

That culture simply doesn’t work with an under-talented roster.

They’ve all had ‘WTF are you doing’ games. Williams has had fewer of those than some others. On the whole, he’s been one of the best players on the team.

I’ll push back on this one. Williams is a P4 player, we’re asking too much of him though. Should be a role player, leader of the 2nd unit type of guy — but instead we rely on him as our third option
That is fine I can go along with that.

On a Purdue or Michigan St he would probably be a great high energy defensive stopper and pest for 10-15 minutes a game

He IS NOT a 25-30mpg 12 point scorer

I think Williams could come back next year he has another year of eligibility, hopefully spent elsewhere

And that there are s my rub with coach in a nutshell. $3+ million for that.

I was giving you a like then retracted after reading that last line. Then again being one of the best on this time is like that tallest " height challenged" person line.

but it's true...based on the season so far Williams has been the third best player, better than Sommerville too bc LS does nothing on defense.

Overall Season Rank:
1. DH/AB
3. JW
4. LS
5. EO
6. DG (limtied PT/projection)
7. JaD
8. TA
9. JoD
9. JM
10. PJH

Good post 👍

JW is a disappointment for sure. A senior that makes very bad decisions rarely seems focused, loves to run around like a crazy man, and has NO feel for the game, can't shoot, and really looks like he could give a shite.

Our shooter xfers....sure, they moved up a level in a lot of cases. Why is it they cannot be schemed for a single open look?

I'm sorry but what are we coaching out there. And you cannot tell me Simpson would have no place on this team this year and we ran him out of town. At least he could drive to the basket and create an open look for someone from 3

but he fits right in and is pretty much the typical Pike player save a few exceptions. However I don't think any of them "don't care" . They're just let loose to play this way.

Was he run out of town or was he dissatisfied with his expected role and having to fight for PT with Ace’s pal ? He’s obviously a much better player than Davis in every aspect.

Well if the coach cannot sell playing time on this team, what the hell is he doing?
