Jerry Kill Interviewed Today, or Did He?

With an additional spot on coaching staff's available, next year, I wouldn't be surprised if Kill would be brought in with a younger guy, who can recruit, in an advisory role.

If Kill is an advisor...(which i don't think takes up a coaching staff spot..might be wrong)...then bring him in.

With his health, I'd rather he not run the offense and go out recruiting.

I'm pretty sure there's an additional "staff" slot starting next season.

You are correct. But still think if he's hired as an advisor, it's not a "staff" role..and we can add an OC, or an OC plus someone else if the 2nd "staff" slot is added.

I'm just saying I'd rather him take on the type of role Fridge had after his 1 year as OC. He didn't recruit, didn't take a staff spot, didn't attend games. He would just help out from home. I'd rather Kill does this.

If Jerry Kill is willing to come here, you bring him in, period, end of story. After the year we've had, don't even know how anyone can question this possibility. This staff needs a seasoned veteran, and someone like him should have been brought in, in the first place. If he's healthy enough to interview, he's healthy enough to coach.

Yeah I'm sure Kill wouldn't be out on the trail.

Kill, his family, and his doctors will determine if he is healthy enough. We don't know for what position he is interviewing (OC, advisor, co-OC) but whatever it is I think it is safe to say that he has already discussed the health issue with those people and wouldn't be here if he didn't believe his health would allow him to do the job. Somehow it doesn't make sense to come out here, interview, and then decline the job because of your health. So, if he is here, he is up for it. Whatever the it is.

Kill is a good coach. My question would be his philosophy compared to Ash's. Kill has always been a very conservative 2 tight end big back that hated to throw the ball. Kind of a 3 and a cloud of dust guy.

As to the added coach, it appears to be about 50/50 on whether or not it passes. NU is following pretty close because of a GA they want to make full time but aren't sure whether it is going to pass.

Our fans are strange. Get a young, up-and-coming supposed prodigy ... want him gone after game 1.

He goes.

Have a chance with a well-respected former HC, which sounds like a slam dunk hire. Nah ... I'd rather a young, hungry up-and-comer.

WTF?

I was surprised to read this because I thought he was retired from coaching. But if he wants in, make it happen.

He's got a pretty good deal at Kansas State right now. His health appears to be better, but a tough condition to predict. He's 55, so if he came in, we could have him for a while. He's been there and done that. Don't know if his brand of football is what we want, but clearly a quality guy and apparently really liked by the players.

For the record, I never wanted Mehringer gone and wish he was still here..btw.

We are in the beginning stages of a VAST rebuild..and it would be better, imo, for young, up and coming, energetic coaches who can grow with the program.

I don't think Ash is a throw it all over the barn kind of guy either, he wants to run it more than pass, just do it with spread concepts.

When Kill was at NIU, in 3 years his starting QB had 539, 229 and 836 rushing yards respectively. While at Minnesota his starting QBs ran for 966, 622 (3 QBs combined), 771 (Nelson + Leidner), 687, 270.

I do wonder about his health issues, but he is qualified. Was he the one doing the playcalling at NIU and Minny tho?

Here is a great example of why you don't hire a "type," you hire a person. As was stated above, many of you want some young, promising, "up-and-comer," and you had one. Then you were dancing in the streets when he left. Up-and-comers need time -- oh yeah, and players. Now we have a chance to get a real coach who has accomplished things, and some would rather have an up-and-comer? Is crack in again?

If Kill wants to come here, hire him. Don't care about the title. Just hire him. He will help.

I want coaches, not personal descriptions.

I don't really understand Kill as OC. I think I read that he didnt call plays in Minni, and had two offensive coordinators. One for passing and one for running. I would love to have him involved with the team in some capacity, but I think we still need a true OC. I like the idea of a young guy and Kill together if thats possible.

All ^^^^that, all day.

Kill would become the most knowledgable Coach on staff if he came here. Not a knock on Ash,but you cant gain the experience and knowledge Kill has from spending one year as HC.Add a young gun as Co Oc and have Kill tutor him..Worked when we added Fridge.

Fair enough, but you must see the uphill battle in arguing for an up-and-comer at this particular juncture?

I wasn't on the "run DM out of town" bandwagon, but now that he's run out of town, I think we try a different direction. And "successful, respected P5 head coach" seems like about as good a direction as we can go.

Not a fan of Kill hire based on his health alone. Worries me about him going on the road to recruit, game day health, etv. An advisory role would be great

Correct, but I'd think a bigger named guy...barring any success here next year, is more likely to use us as a one and done and go on to somwhere else. As opposed to a younger guy who wants to grow and develop here.

I don't care what other fans want...and yes, i understand most want an established head coach. I think Ash will do whats best for the team, either way..so doesn't really matter what I, or anyone else here wants, anyway. Just my two cents.

this fan base is bizzare at times...SMH..Kill would become the best coach on staff. due to his veteran knowledge.
maybe OSU fans should be upset Urban Myer is the HC ..because of his previous 'health concerns" ??

Guy has been a successful head coach. That job requires leadership, organizational skills, and other qualities that would serve him well in any role, including offensive coordinator. While he hasn't called plays in a while, he knows how to manage coaches, get the players to buy in to his philosophy, and play pretty organized football.

If his health is up to snuff, you hire him yesterday.

Jerry had no offense on his teams. So let's continue the Ash disaster. First, Mehringer who had the worst offense in the country at RU. Now Jerry who was known as a guy who had teams with offensive deficiencies. Ash impressed Hobbs because he showed him integrity after Flood. Unfortunately, Ash has nothing else. Need a new head coach for the 2018 season.

Jerry would be a well needed grown up and voice of experience on staff

It was no coincidence that the only decent year of the Flood error was the one where Fridge was an integral part

I will be very surprised if Rutgers doesn't go the co-OC route. Kill would be excellent as part of a two headed monster. Pair him with a young guy, and you have guaranteed continuity moving forward. If one leaves, the other is still there and the offense stays intact.

Ash has done nothing else? I hope you are not basing this on last years record. We have a top 30 recruiting class coming in after watching Flood destroy what was built by Schiano. That in itself is a major accomplishment! He is instilling a new brand to Rutgers Football which will take time to accomplish and you want a new Head Coach already? Did you have the same feeling with Schiano when he wet the bed for his first several years? Never mind. I bet you did! Some people want success today, but that is not how it works in the real world. Ash wants to win and if Hiring Kill is Ash's/Hobbs next move, he will be here shortly and I support it.
