The words according to a student at PoSU. ESPN had a small segment about their plans to honor the enabler tomorrow.

It's amazing how much press the Kaepernick Anthem stuff gets but you barely hear a peep about a child abuse enabler being honored and revered as if he was Jesus.

You'll see ESPN anchors all day long taking stands about social justice and political action, and that is completely fine in the right context. But I have not once seen an ESPN personality speak about how horribly disgusting Paterno and the University both are

Kudos to State Penn Student Newspaper for calling out this Saturdays sham ceremomy.I did see this reported on ESPN OTL.

Penn State's student-run newspaper is objecting to the university's plans to honor the 50th anniversary of former head coach Joe Paterno's first game later this month.

The Daily Collegian's Friday editorial says Penn State "needs a reality check."

The editorial says undergraduates know Paterno only through the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal, court fights or alumni who "can't accept" that their time is past.

It also says Paterno is no longer a community hero, and that undergraduates are ready to move on. The university is declining comment.

well its a start but thats like 3 people who are managing to break away from the hive collective.

I said this on a different thread. If State Penn community and students want to put the scandal behind them, time to remove all vestiges of the previous regime. That means no Paterno name on campus. No Paterno cardboard cut outs all over their crappy town. No dumb-ass Paterno glasses in the stands. A petition to never have the statue put back in place. Never have Joe Paterno day ever, and never bring up restoring his 430 or whatever it is victories

Don't hold your breath. It will never--and I mean NEVER--happen. As time goes by, Paterno will be held in yet higher regard

Amazing regarding the out cry two years ago when Penn State played here and complained about the inappropriate posters, chants, tee shirts etcetera. Yet rather than laying low and putting the issue in the past - this group continues to "idolize" the myopic coach as a hero!

Give me a break! Really the continued behavior of PSU administration and fans specific to theidolization of Paterno is worse than the catholic church pedophile scandal.

The aspect of this entire thing that has always fascinated me are the excuses Paterno fans gave after this thing blew up. For years, we heard from them about how the program was full of integrity and honor and that was because Paterno ruled the program with an iron fist. He knew what his players were doing, etc. He knew how to keep them in line. He knew everything that was going on at every level of his program from the managers to the players to his assistant coaches. There were even stories that leaked out that when PSU players got caught do something stupid, Paterno was notified immediately because everyone knew he needed to be kept in the loop. He had his pulse on every aspect of his program and things around his program.

Then the Sandusky story breaks while he's the head coach and suddenly it was............ "well, Paterno can't know everything about what's going on in his program".............. So they guy you championed as having complete and utter control and knowledge over his program and that's what made it so great suddenly doesn't know everything about his program and what's going on around it?

LOL. Yeah right.

in fairness a bunch of them said it was a bad idea the day it was announced.

The timely death of Joe Pa really ruins course for all parties. If he had to take the stand it would have been very very sad.

Ty - that's a really great point that I don't recall seeing anyone post about before. Can't have it both ways, although they're trying.

Talked about many times.

But usually shouted down by them....you're all just jealous, it's obviously a frame up, you don't know what you're talking about, etc.

Don't forget that the NCAA is totally uninterested in boycotting PA - unlike UNC.

BTW I kinda disagree that Social Justice should be a theme of ESPN broadcasting but their channel their rules. I get my sports news elsewhere.

Also, I saw a lot of Pitt fans were wearing "Joe Knew" tee shirts. I'd love one for thier next visit.

Forget about the Sandusky stuff for a moment...the fact that PSU fans still devote this much thought and energy toward a ball coach who has been dead for 5 years now is scary. These people have no lives and border on psychotic.

My wife is an FSU grad and they have moved on from Bobby. PSU however just can't let Joe go.

I agree 1000%, BUT I did a search for "Paterno" on our board and there are over 200 posts in the last couple weeks. The offseason is probably worse.

That's not including any variations like Joe, JoePa, JoeKnew, etc. Or where someone replies saying "he" knew. There's easily thousands of posts a month.

They deserve ridicule for all time, or at least until their fan base understands the heinous crimes committed. But you could easily switch psu with Rutgers in your first sentence. He wasn't even our coach.

Do a search on Twitter and every single person besides Penn State fans think this is a horrible and disgusting idea.

This is a double middle figure to all of the victims of child abuse.

Penn State haven't learn a damn thing. The CULTure is alive well. They will never change.

sickening...

exactly why they should have been given the death penalty.......

a culture where winning games was more important than protecting children from being raped, is a culture that should have been completely stopped, not sent to the corner for 5 minutes and allowed to return unchanged....

You can't boycott Pennsylvania over a university's decision to honor a dishonorable person. The boycott of North Carolina is over a STATE law that, to many, basically sanctions discrimination. VERY different situation.

An no, social justice should not be a theme of a sports broadcast, but it should not be ignored when relevant to the place from which the broadcast originates, or if it affects the game (or the pregame).

I think it's great that some student wrote an editorial in The Daily Collegian that Ped State needs a reality check, but I have to ask, what the Hell were you thinking? Why do you even go to that place? Did you really think that the fans and alumni were going to stop worshiping Paterno? They’re never going to stop, it’s so obvious. I don’t understand why anyone would send their kids there. Nothing else matters but football. Not even the victims. It’s not a university. It’s a football program with some classes that take place in the vicinity. If they did have to drop the football, nobody would apply and the place would shut down.

I think the real travesty is that there is significant contention the board of trustee level. When you have a problem at the top, that tells you all you need to know about the culture that exists below. For good or bad, I have had some visibility into what is going on with that group. There are actors amongst the trustees that are despicable. And the Paterno family is even worse.

My understanding is that some members of the Board are elected by the alumni.
Those elected after Paterno was fired were the most ardent Paterno supporters.
So what does that say about the alumni?
