Football John McNulty returns to Rutgers Football as Senior Offensive Analyst

I have to be honest - I see all these guys taking analyst positions in college and the pros as a bridge to something else. What do they do in these positions? Do they just look at film, identify tendencies and convey probabilities of play calls for game prep?

I could be wrong, but I think the analysts are coaching. They can’t do recruiting but can do everything else.

How many times was he fired here ?

Someone on this board said mcnulty did some really bad stuff and that was why he was canned in 2019 here. I guess that poster was lying
It wasn’t anything that GS couldnt overcome. People make mistakes.

My recollection is that the AD (Hobbs) found out he was discussing the inner workings of the Ash administration with an old coach.

@Knight Shift !!!!!

LFG!!!!
How do you not rehire the "Instant impact" "greatest OC in Rutgers history"???????

Have to act fast.
The lowest scoring OC in the entire 2018 CFB season isn't going to be available for long (13.5ppg #130 out of 130).

I've made my feelings on OC McNulty's coaching well known.

But this. Eh is it really a big deal?
Who hasn't complained about their boss/company to a former co-worker?

I don’t think it was a big deal. But that was the rumor at the time. Hobbs thought he couldn’t be trusted and had to go. Interesting that the person he was accused of talking with is now the person bringing him back.

@Knight Shift - remember when we finally had a good drive (against Indiana?).

Sit went right down the field before the half, 7 for 7 throwing the ball, up tempo no huddle and keeping the defense off balance.

When asked about it after the game and why not doing that more:
'Well but what about running the ball? We can't do that all the time. What about our defense?'

Our defense definitely appreciated the lack of scoring the rest of his tenure.

Who knew the defense prefers the offense not trying to score?
You can't put a price on that level of 4-D chess.

He was supposedly "yelling " at certain players at halftime during a blowout . Too aggresive??

Schiano is all about recycling & saving the planet ..
As long as he puts Rutgers on the winning track ( constantly) and builds a program that can reach the top
( I believe Greg can build a program capable of being elite, but a better game-day coach finishes the job)
he can recycle all he wants and if it's only the Rutgers area he saves, that's alright by me.
If hiring McNulty helps RU win, I'm glad Schiano is willing to spend the money to do so.
Rutgers played the cheap game when supporting the football program and that's a big reason why Rutgers was down for so long.

I read coach histories on Wiki a lot.
Coaches move around like crazy - 2 years here, 3 years there, 1 year as "consultant" between jobs - very nomadic existence.
Greg is the boss of rehiring - an RU coach is just one job loss away from his next RU job in the future.
I suppose that with the FAMILY thing GS would rather deal with the devil he knows than the one he doesn't

McNulty will be the next OC. Ciarocca will do another great job this year and receive an offer he can’t refuse.

I wasn't digging too much with my initial question. I am genuinely curious about what these guys do and bring to the table. There seems to be a bunch of them scattered across college and the pros.

They can coach in the building - like showing them film and talking about stuff, but they cannot plan or participate in on field practices. They can be at the games but not involved in coaching at games.

Thanks. So it's sort of what I thought it was - extra eyes and brains to study film and help with game planning.

It was explained to me on game day and on practice "field" they can coach the coaches not the players. So they can advise via the coach not directly with the player. In the building they can coach the player via support, data and film.
