John Severe Transfering from Fordham

Pikiell probably knows him from HS recruiting. Will be interesting to see if he has any interest.

He graduated in 3 years?? I remeber eddie was recruiting him when he first came on board. Don't know if he'd be a fit, but we do need shooters.

For one year he would help the bench depth and allow the starters to get some rest. The fact he has offensive skills makes the transfer worth while similar to Grier this past season.

my guess is Big East for Severe...SJU, SHU, PC with Kris Dunn departing, perhaps a place like Temple....

Looks like he was a starter in 2013-14 averaging 32.9 mpg and scoring 17.3 ppg
2014-15 looks like he came off bench 18.9 mpg and 6.7ppg
2015-16 look like a reserve role again 17.4 mpg with 7.6 ppg
Career 3point % .331 and fg% .357 FT% .784

Don't know much about his game, but he went from 32 minutes p/g as a freshman to just 17 M/P/G as a JR at Fordham. That is not the progression you want to see.

That is interesting - you have to have a fair amount of discipline and be on top of things to get your 4 year degree in 3 years - it does not necessarily mean that you are a genius - but it would seem to indicate that when needed, you are able to focus and deliver. Basketball career at Fordham may not have been perfect - but if he is maturing, he will be of value on some program.

Fordham had a lot of disciplinary problems with Severe and his progress was higher earlier in his career because they were rebuilding and without depth....that forced him to play a ton of minutes, take a ton of shots and eventually they restocked the roster and relied on Severe less and less as Fordham started to improve this year.....Severe is a player that "hunts" down offensive shots, which is fine when your program doesn't have other options to score....as Ryan Rhoomes improved his game (a player RU, SHU and SJU passed on or didn't recruit hard enough earlier in the process), they leaned on Rhoomes more and Severe less and less....as a one-year "grier" type of rental, maybe if a Corey Sanders departed, but I would not take Severe over Mike Williams.

The Rutgers fan base has to adjust its thinking. Never say never, but Steve Pikiell is here to BUILD the program. It is not a quick fix and he is not a quick fix guy. In his mind building the right way is the only way to go. Quick fixes via transfer simply is not how he has ever done business. His goal is not to go .500 next year. It's to "go dancing" in 3 or 4.

For this upcoming season, at this late stage, bringing in a one year transfer is a good move rather than throwing a 4 year scholarship at a low rated high schooler who's going to clog up a roster spot for years. Far be it for me to quote Bob Hurley but there was an article posted somewhere today where he advocated this strategy for Pikiell. Get some hold the for graduate transfers this year to plug immediate holes and then you'll be able to replace their spots next year after hitting the recruiting trail. Speaking in generalities here, I'll defer to others more knowledgable about Severe and how he would fit.

these 5th year players can act as a bridge to get you by. I know some seem against like Greene Rice but if you need the right fit it can work out...can you imagine how worse RU would have been if Grier didnt show up this year.

...yeah we would have probably only won 1 BE game.

In all seriousness, Grier hurt more than he helped. NO D. He forced shots in the 2nd half and outside a 3-4 game stretch he couldn't shoot. Batie would have been better.

He helped a helluva lot more than Goode who is the type of HS player that would still be available at this point and is definitely clogging up a roster spot. If you think you're going to land a Jeff Greer or Eli Carter then by all means sign him but highly doubt we are going to find a building block HS player at this point. And it beats just not using the scholarship at all and going into the season down one roster spot like we did this year. Where is the next Robert Lumpkins!?!

He will be looking for a place where he can make a legitimate high visibility contribution
- a contribution that will showcase him & shine a brighter, more dazzling light on... John Severe
.... and help to reposition him as "John Severe - talented basketball player - not to be overlooked"

Rutgers needs lots of help - but a good portion of the help that will be needed will be happening somewhat outside of the brightest part of the spotlight
- it will be noticed by those with a trained eye - but it will not be headline grabbing /dazzling.

Interesting, I would think a kid who was honor roll and graduated in 3 years wouldn't be a problem. Perhaps he is difficult to coach? Seems like he took a leave from the team at one point for personal reasons and was suspended once for violating team rules.

Said it before and will say it again. The shot-happy defense-averse Grier that played for RU was the same player that suited up for FAU as a freshman. Does that make me dubious about Severe's potential here? Yep. 7 ppg and disciplinary issues????

Doesn't it likely become really a moot point if Pikiell lands the kids he is looking at - unless Severe is considering paying his own way ..

He would fit at SHU-----especially if Whitehead leaves.

I think you always look at taking a grad transfer unless you're a UNC or UK type program.

Most of the time they can help you and if they can't it's a 1 year deal. You don't have to look at them for 4 years.

The one stat folks aren't focussing on is the most important one in college basketball in my opinion - field goal percentage. Overall way sub 40%? Not a close question. Add the other factors mentioned above? No way.

I don't want Severe at RU. He didn't have a great 3 years at Fordham. He took most of the shots as a frosh, hardly played as a soph and this past year averaged 7 ppg. His shooting % was not very good at all. I think it is terrific that he graduated in 3 years but we already have Nigel Johnson, Mike Williams, Justin Goode and possibly Bullock at the two guard a few minutes a game. We also still might have Tripp from NYC. I just don't see the need for another 2 guard at this time. If guys transfer out or a guy who is an out of this world player becomes available are the only way I would consider adding another 2 guard.
