For the umpteenth time...
1. Athletic directors ARE NOT politicians/elected officials. They are SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS so speaking to the media is only a small part of their jobs.
2. It is a "back room" type of job at the majority of universities. Without looking it up, tell me the names of the Ohio State, Florida State and Alabama Athletic Directors right now. (I'd bet $1,000 that no one can name all three without going to their internet browser to search). And they are only the last 3 national champions in football so if athletic director is a job with tons of publicity how come the majority of people on here couldn't come up with these names without looking them up? Why? Because it's not as public a job as people make it out to be. Julie is not the GM of the Giants or Yankees or Knicks. She's a college administrator.
3. Pernetti was visible in the media because let's face it, what else did the guy bring to the table as an athletic director? The guy was BROADCASTING live from the RU/LOUISVILLE game in 2006. Tell me how that qualified him to be the athletic director at a major university less than 3 years later? Ok, he played football at Rutgers, was from NJ and looked cool in sunglasses and a suit. That's wonderful. And as bad as Julie was with the media when she first got here, Tim was equally awful on his OTL interview.
For someone who is pursuing a MBA in sports administration, trust me when I tell you Julie is the most qualified AD we've had in here since going to Division 1-A back in the late 70's. Sure the guy from Stony Brook was also qualified (thank God we didn't hire him though) and I'm sure Sean Frazier was as well. But can anyone actually say for sure Frazier would have been a home run with the media? Tell me where in his role as deputy AD at Wisconsin did he have deal with the type of jagoffs we have at the SL and Bergen Record? And K-Mac would have been an absolute joke of a hire. I know football "drives the bus" but the non-revenue sports were neglected for entirely way too long and someone needed to right the ship on those which can, by the way, be turned around without major funding. Unless The Donald himself came in to be RU's athletic director, football funding was going to be a problem for anyone who took the job.
