Lacrosse Arms Race

"New athletics financial requests for 2020 comprise 6.3 percent of the Board’s total $319.9 million request budget, with the lacrosse stadium making up 99 percent of the cost."

And people say we spend a lot on Athletics.

Once this is built only Us and Maryland will not have a lacrosse specific stadium. Michigan’s stadium is beautiful as is PSU’s we ha e a lacrosse specific facility and with some upgrades we could easily play there. They would need to Turf it and add a video board to it. They could also use to improve the game day locker rooms which are super small, maybe add stands on the far side with new gameday facility under those stands. With that being said the placement of the Rodkin Center and the addition of a Turf practice field on the front edge of the blue lot would actually make it easier to play lacrosse games at Yurchak. Remember Yurchak is 25 years old.

FINALLY!!! I’ve been arguing with you about this for 3 years lol!!

It's not an argument. The team loves playing in now SHI stadium. They do well there. It's about money and simply needing what others have.

If it was just about the team and the game, they'd always stay there. I sort of like it that only us and Maryland have the big stadiums now. It's a completely different feel for teams coming into those environments.

Real short term thinking. 2500 seats? A first round tournament game will draw more than that in 2019. I realize it's Baltimore, but Hopkins has drawn more than 2500 on occasion for regular season games for 50 years. ACC regular season games draw more than that now. They should build it with seating for 4000 now and make it expandable. Otherwise this it will only be good for 10-15 years before they outgrow it.

From what I understand they would have Turf on It already but the soccer teams opposed it. I like the stadium but, if they added at least a couple of video screens and turf Yurchak would be awesome and there would be over flow crowds there. I saw a state HS lacrosse championship game there stands were packed and the atmosphere was electric.

Problem is if we put turf on Yurcak, we would need a new soccer stadium as they can't play on turf.

Because no one else in D1 does.
So you know all 206 teams play on Grass? That’s is impressive. JK, I know they don’t want to play there if it is turf. You can put a lacrosse field next to Yurchak that would be cool.

Let's not forget, Ronald Yurcak was a lacrosse player at Rutgers. His family, rightfully so, isn't happy about the team not being able to play there.

How's it going guys...

Just checking in as my bride is giving me a little break as we drive across I-80 back to Michigan...the drive is brutal by the way...the things we do for our kids ;)

Just caught up with some of the players yesterday on campus as we looped up to check on son #1 after dropping off son #2 in Baltimore...seems like the guys I talked with are excited to be back in town and are ready to get after it this fall...preparation begins. The campus was buzzing...congrats on the football win on Friday as well

I drove by the Rodkin...exciting to see progress...they need to speed that up. As the title says from Cali...it's an "Arms Race" and it's not gonna stop...the UM and PSU facilities are great...the new reality is keep pumping money in. A few months back I signed up to donate to men's lacrosse through the RU Fund. It's not a ton monthly but every little chunk helps. Recruits like facilities. They like history and winning as well, but facilities are a big part of the equation. Hopefully the Rodkin can move the needle for RU Lacrosse, and we can have a great season ahead.

Mixed emotions as I drive back to Michigan knowing my kids are both out of the house. It's gonna be different...makes me yearn for the actual season even more so I can travel east every weekend to see them.

Hope you guys are doing well...cheers to a good year for RU

2500 is small-ish

4-5K is the right number...I agree

Games at Hopkins and Loyola draw those numbers...those stadiums are perfect in size

Why can’t Rutgers play lax at Yurcak?

I like that venue - remember watching USA scrimmage Saudi Arabia as a WC warmup in ‘94.

They actually do not open Yurchak until at least April 1st and sometimes even longer, which affords the lacrosse team only 1 opportunity to play on it, Maybe two.

I was surprised tOSU is making this change. Anyone who has been to Jessie Owen, which I get also holds track meets, is a phenomenal facility.

I would rather RU upgrade Yurcak so it is an all year facility than build a new stadium.

Long term we really should have both soccer and Lax stadiums.

They don't have to be anything crazy.

2 questions that need to be address:

  1. Do we have space for both and where do you put them?
  2. How much will it cost for each?

Exactly. Tanking the soccer programs for lax isn't the right way to do things. Good luck getting any half decent women's soccer recruits playing on a turf field.
They should have thought about that when lacrosse alum Ronald Yurcak was donating the money.
