Getting a chance to check out some of the St. Joe's Penn game.

I am not sure I've seen a team create more havoc than St. Joe's. It's hard to see exactly what they are doing without being there live but I do know as soon as the other team gets close to having the ball that long rangy D guy they have (and they have a few) jumps up to midfield and the goalie comes out and they just clamp down all over. Penn is having a little more success clearing the ball than we did but not a ton.

This St. Joe's team is an interesting watch. They are only up by 2 late 3rd but I'm impressed. They have athletes all over and they play very, very hard. In a one game setting I wouldn't want to play them if I were a top team. Problem is this would be tough to duplicate in a short rest scenario.

St. Joes pulls it out at UPenn.

SJ is the longest team I've ever seen. Uva has had some close guys with that length but SJ has it at close and the LSM position. They know how to use it. Passing lanes that you are normally playing in just aren't there. They are a fun watch from a fan perspective. Their penchant for turning it over and their goalie play being mid will likely stop them from advancing as far as they otherwise would.

Navy down 1 to Lemoyne who if I am being completely honest, am not really sure who they are. It's ugly. Navy lacrosse has really gone south under the old Marquette coach. They are going to have to make a change. Not sure I've ever seen Navy lacrosse this bad.

They added some space in the 4th. Amazed UMass squeeked by Lowell by 1.

Someone can fact check me but I think I remember hearing last years UVA starters at close D were 6'5" 6'6" and 6'7". Insane if true.

Pretty sure that's true. I believe St. Joe's are roughly that same size at close, but they are jsut as long at the midfield. They make passing lanes much smaller.

My son is a 6'4" midfielder as a HS Jr and that length everyone envies can be as much of a curse as it is a blessing. He had tons of discomfort prior to his spurt slowing down. Osgood Schlatters in the knees, fractured heal growth plate, plus just relearning your own body and its mechanics every time a spurt would happen.

Was that standard back in the day or has the players just gotten big. When I played football way way way back in the day, some of my teammates would play lacrosse in the spring but it was the smaller guys playing, outside our QB who did have some height.

Way, way back in the day the defensive unit was often big, but NOT 6"5", 6'6" and 6'7". My senior year in college, way, way, way back our starting D was 6'4", 6'3" and 6'1". Above average size but not unique. All good players. The sole underclassman was a football captain and HM AA (lax) his senior year. A couple of others played football in college (DB, LB, RB) and I say about 50% of the others played HS ball.

We had some bigger guys in D when I was at RU. I live length and Brian does too. But if they can’t move it’s useless. You don’t really see guys at the D1 level that can’t move. Guys are getting bigger across the board though. Like every sport. It’s evolving. Bigger faster stronger. But lacrosse, like football, has areas where you can be smaller, but you better be quick/strong.

Watched the end of the PSU/OSU game, OSU looked legit (definitely the goalie is legit). Good thing about being in the BIG conference is that if we win the conf games, no one will care about the OOC games (outside the SBU, no bad losses). Always about the conference record. If we can pull off another upset at OSU would guess we're right back in the conversation.

BU beats Army Saturday. Play Harvard tonight. Down 12-3 at the half and lose 16-7. BU goalie saved roughly 70% on Saturday and roughy 35% tonight. Anyone have an explanation?

State of the game today. Anyone can truly beat anyone on any given day. College guys are very susceptible to let downs after big wins, especially in mid week games. Get back to campus, everyone tells you how great you are, next thing you know your still celebrating the big win and the whistle just blew to start to the next game. Saturday to Tuesday is a nano second between college lacrosse games. Older more mature teams have a much easier time of handling those types of situations.

LAX is exploding at the HS level but not at the college level. That means there are more D1 caliber players across the country than ever. In the past there was a big talent gap between the traditional powers and the rest of D1. Today there is way more D1 talent than the big name programs can take, so players that at one time would have been a lock to go to a traditional powerhouse are finding their way to up and coming programs like BU, St. Joe’s, Utah, etc.

A buddy of mine’s son was a first team All American and team captain for a state championship program on LI and was named Defenseman of the a year. Was also captain of the county champ football team and the basketball team. He is now a freshman at BU. Not too long ago a team like BU would have zero shot at landing a kid with those credentials unless there was some family connection, which there isn’t.

That may be changing with the the number of scholarships a school may offer tripled.

Interesting games this weekend that impact Rutgers.

No. 6 Penn State at No. 2 Maryland -2.5
No. 4 Princeton -4.5 at No. 18 Dartmouth
No. 5 North Carolina -1.5 at No. 9 Army -- rooting hard for the Black Knights here
No. 14 Johns Hopkins -1.5 at No. 19 Michigan
UMass at No. 16 Saint Joseph’s -4

LIU just suffered their fist loss since we hammered them in the first game of the season. They had one of the longest win streaks in the country at 7 games and were receiving votes. Who did they lost to? Wagner, who had an 18 game losing streak dating back to last year.

State of lacrosse now.

Army up 2-0 in the early going against UNC in West Point.

Princeton 6 Dartmouth 5 at the half. Morel standing on his head at goal for Dartmouth, 65% saved.

Princeton 11 Dartmouth 8 with 2 less than 2 minute empty netters. Princeton goalie made what might be the save of the year with a minute left.

Observation from the game. Rutgers is athletic but tOSU has DUDES. They are clearly bigger and just as fast. Very skilled.

Tasty tie difference but too many u forced errors by RU. RU D is legit.

Rutgers can’t shoot. Period. That’s the difference in this game. We consistently miss looks inside 10 yards with hands free. D1 players don’t miss those. OSU certainly didn’t.

Agree - but you can’t discount the impact Tasty had on the game. He is huge and fills the goal like a box goalie.

But he gave up goals. Rutgers kept overthrowing skip passes and missing in front of goal.

Yeah he had a few good saves but honestly nothing that you don’t see with any good D1 goalie. We are not good shooters. We’re just not. Week in week out when our opponents get to the door step they bury it most of the time, unless Stoller is on his ear, which happens more than most goalies. Don’t think I’ve seen a team miss more frequently inside 10 yards than this team. And we are not a good outside shooting team either.

We seem to be best in transition and for some inexplicable reason we avoid early offense and don’t press out advantage going defense to offense. I really don’t understand it because that historically has been our DNA. And we have a veteran defense that can fend off short possessions. It is truly a head scratcher.

In order to make the engine run smoothly on offense, you have to have some age and experience that first and second year players can not provide. Looking at the stats, it would make you think we should have won. Watching this game, you can see that we are having trouble with execution. That will come in time.

Dropping a game by two goals to the #3 team on their own turf is no disgrace. The "no moral victory" crowd will call you out, but it's something you have to live with and I for one am ok with it.

We were right there. We missed too many goals you simply have to have when you are one on one with the goalie. Young guys will learn that. Very proud of the effort today against a team that has athletes all over the field. They very well might be the best team in the country. We stood toe to toe on their own field. A lot to like. Just need to finish chances more, especially our attackmen.

Agree - as I mentioned in the RU/tOSU game thread RU is fast and super athletic but Ohio State has DUDES at every level.
I'm told they have $1MM invested in their starting 10. Pretty crazy.

ND getting handled pretty easily at Sarah. Someone explain to me why are they comfortably in the tournament?

Hopkins is getting manhandled. They are getting bullied again which is a theme for them in the B1G. They look tiny compared to other B1G teams.

Pretty crazy because this program was left for dead over the last four years. Meyers was thought to be getting canned after this season...unless this happened.
