lavianos arm ...

When did you see Kansas stack the box yesterday....or does typing "stack the box" make you try to sound like you know what you are talking about? I pretty much saw a basic defense...aside from their alignment against our bunch formations

We can use any phrase you want. They did the same thing that PSU did, and rightfully so. They just don't have the talent PSU does to stop our run game.

Did you see the USC game last night? They took 4 shots down the field...in the first quarter and a half. I see other teams to this.

Why doesn't Rutgers, even when there are clear opportunities for the QB to do so?

What did KU do that PSU did...or are you just guessing?

I like Laviano - I'm not sure if it's arm "strength".... but there's something going on where, as a team, we don't seem to stretch the field as much as we (apparently) should with the size/speed of our receivers.
Maybe it's arm strength..
maybe CL fears making a mistake
maybe it's the play calling

Let's be honest with what he brings.

Pros:

1) Somewhat mobile
2) Accurate on short passes
3) Touch passes are adequate

Cons:
1) Obvious lack of arm strength shrinks the playbook
2) Can't stretch the field
3) Very questionable decision making at inopportune times

Laviano screams back up QB when you have a guy like Rettig holding the clipboard. His skill set prohibits you from making winning plays against good teams. He is the ultimate low risk, low reward choice, which unfortunately, is how our head coach views the game of football.
He doesn't beat nova or Dodd

We are running the Patriots offense except we don't have Brady, Gronk, Edelman and a pro O-line. Brady can get away with only throwing over the middle because Gronk is a matchup nightmare. Gronk alone can completely open up the middle of the field because he catches like a WR and blocks like an offensive tackle. Then Brady is constantly hitting his receivers in stride for YAC. Throw in that the pocket is constantly collapsing on Laviano, he is consistently throwing on the run or off his back foot, which he does not have the arm talent to pull off like Rodgers, Stafford, Wilson, and the whole thing is a disaster.

Reading a WR in one on one coverage on the outside is the easiest read for a QB. Reading the safeties and linebackers is the challenge. Laviano should be able to read man coverage of the outside. Problem is the pocket usually collapses and he runs outside the pocket and throws on the run. He needs to step up in the pocket and deliver a 30 yard pass high over the shoulder to Patton or Agudosi along the sideline. But he has an awkward 3/4 release that might get knocked down if he steps up in the pocket. I like Rettig's arm strength and over the top motion but if Rettig plays he will need to take hits as he steps up in the pocket and delivers the ball downfield. He is pretty light and I'd nervous he'd get injuried. But I think he needs the opportunity to show if he is a gamer or not. If he can step in the face of a pass rush, take a hit and deliver a 30 yard pass down the sideline.
