Do any of you know if the RU lacrosse teams offer spots to walk on players? Specifically the women's team? Thanks..

They are usually preferred walk ons. As they are recruited but do not get offered a scholarship right away but can earn one going forward. My daughter was offered one. I am not sure if they actually hold an open try outs.

Fill out the questionnaire on the team website. I spoke to the coaches about one of my players walking on and that is what they told me to have him do.

Yea, we did the questionnaire and my daughter has tried calling back many times, never able to reach a human.. lol She practiced with the club team this week but is still trying to reach the varsity team coaches. Thanks for the replys.

They are supposed to hold open tryouts but, they may not do that until the spring. I know that the men have their open tryout in the fall,

Have your daughter go to the Lax coach's office at the Hale Center or show up at one of the team workouts.

Definitely wouldn't do that. You need to be properly cleared to be able to lift weights with the team.

Not even sure that would fly in high school much less a D1 sports program.

Never mind showing up to somebody's place of work unannounced. The coaches are far too busy to have somebody wander in. They may respect the moxie, but they'll probably be more thrown off by it coming out of left field.

? If the coaches aren't responding & you want a tryout or walk on opportunity, then why not go to the coaches office or practice if they aren't there & tell them? Nothing wrong with that. Obviously, you won't be allowed to workout or practice but you have to go get what you want.

I just don't see that being effective. I'd email video. That's the best way. I'd say the only way. If you don't get a bite doing that, it's probably not in the cards. This is division 1 sport. There are high school All Americans not seeing time on the men's team. The program is run like a D1 team. I'd be surprised if you could even get into the coaches offices. And if you did, they'd tell you what I just did. Send your video.

Her high school coach should be able to help (if the coach is even a half way decent coach).

Maybe try and direct message the program over social media (i.e. Twitter)? I agree that it's D1 and your daughter may not be a good fit or have the ability.

But for the program to host a submission form on their site for interested athletes and to not respond, is lazy and unprofessional. It doesn't reflect well on the program. At a minimum one of the assistant coaches/admins can respond quickly to say thank you for your interest in the women's lacrosse program but at this time we're not interested. I can't imagine that generic form gets more than 100-150 submissions a year which is manageable for any coaching staff to respond to inquiries.

To be totally honest, if your daughter stops by the Hale Center and speaks with an admin to indicate you've submitted a recruit questionnaire, are interested in the program, and would like to understand the feasibility of walk-on opportunities, that is not a poor action in my mind. You'd come across as professional, interested and yet trying to pursue an opportunity.

I was on the Rutgers track team because I tracked down the coaches. Get after it.

Video's were sent with the questionnaire. We'll see what happens. Interestingly, she's playing with Joe Nardella's younger sister on club. I'm curious if the coaches monitor the club team as if it were a JV team... or maybe they don't care.. lol

That's the best way to go about it. Most any staff will give video a look I would imagine.

I can't speak for staffs, but my guess is they definitely aren't looking at club teams play. The JV team would be considered the young guys on the roster who aren't getting game runs.

There is a massive difference between the club team at Rutgers and the guys on the varsity squad. As I said, you have high school All Americans that have a tough time breaking into the line-up on the varsity side. The scout team is filled with kids with scholarship money and recruited walk-ons. Just making the team would be a real long shot. Maybe the women's side is a little different, but I wouldn't think that much so. Division 1 lacrosse is big business now. Finding a kid on a club team isn't playing into their team building.
