Layups…

Bunny Rabbit GIF by Mia Page

As I said in another thread this is all about fundamentals. This team at this stage lacks simple fundamentals. Missing layups, not boxing out, no reaction to lose balls, bad spacing on defense…. They can all be and should be fixed as the year goes on.

But the most concerning is still this teams inability to make layups. Most of the misses are due to lack of body control and not using the freaking backboard. Need to get under control and power up to the glass rather than falling away and trying to finger roll.

Talk before the season was that this seasons team were better shooters.Missing so many layups is unacceptable because its the easiest shot if you know how to bank the ball into the basket.I'm more concerned with 3 point shooting where Princeton had a 15 point advantage.Rutgers needs a point guard that can drive toward the basket and pass to the corners for open 3 point shots.Griffiths and Choi should be taking those shots.

Several of those layups were prayers, just forcing a shot that wasn't there, flinging the ball up near the basket, and hoping to grab an offensive rebound.
Some were very low percentage shots.

I kept hearing in the preseason we would be better because our guards can beat their man off the dribble and get easy layups for our bigs. 1 out of 31 games is a small number. Game 1 our guards were only looking to score. Noah had a simple bounce pass to a wide open oskar for a layup and instead flung a shot toward the basket that didnt go in

Our guards don't make defenders uncomfortable. Very easy to defend someone dribbling full speed right at you. Much harder to defend someone who can hesitate or pump fake.

Like the guy we had last year when he was healthy

The two Xaivian Lee layups in the 2nd half really stuck out to me.

End to end drive: finished with left hand on left side.

The drive and spin that left Austin Williams lost: finished with right hand on right side.

It's little things like this and make the difference.
Being able to finish with both hands.

Best two assists of the night came from Hyatt and Omoruyi

I hope we see a bunch of zone in OOC. Woolfolk and Cliff work together nicely high low. usually it is Woolfolk passing to Cliff.

Looking at pure data it appears that Noah had a high assist rate at UMASS so I have hope. My only concern is that maybe he had the ball in his hands way too much at UMASS so assists were inevitable.

We need to learn how to share the game. That requires both trust and familiarity

HERE WE GO AGAIN!!! 17 missed??!! Thet’s INSANE!!!
It is time to bring this front and center and for Pike and Brandon Knight to correct it . We have blown enough games over the last few years by blowing uncontested and contested layups.
It is time right now for Pike to start over and demand that the guards use the damn backboard and make the layup easier with a better chance to go in. It is also time on contested layups to drill footwork , pivoting , slowing down to allow you to get advantage over the defender and make the shot.

These are fundamental things that must be drilled in practice starting today. First player that drives in and throws up a wild shot without trying to use the backboard sits a few possessions until he gets it in his head he cannot continue to miss the wrong way. I said 10 layups which would have given us a comfortable lead and you are saying 17 , that is unconscionable for a Division 1 basketball team. This cannot be tolerated no more. Drill the fundamentals about using the backboard into their skulls. Enough already. I will be asking Pike or whatever coach about the layup issue at the next meeting.

Thanks for the breakdown but also Derek and JMike while dribbling lost control of the ball for turnovers while driving. Their handle has to be tighter and closer to their body so when the help defenders try raking for the ball , they only get skin.

The team only had 9 TOs total, the least of their problems
Derek 3 Gavin 2, JMike AWill Noah and Hyatt 1.

My son was at the game and said Princeton made contact with the RU player on most of those layups.
100%--SIAP we got hit a ton on R shots around the basket. Meanwhile Princeton's Allocco was never called on the nonstop elbows and lowered shoulders he threw into defenders on his iso's down in the paint. Yeh maybe we didn't play well enough to win, but the refs hosed us all game too.

We've gottta lead the world in "missed dunks" the past few years.

I agree with Willis here. We did miss a couple of bunnies but for the most part the “layups” were highly contested and or just wild weak drives

You hit this right on the head. Square your shoulders and use the glass. As far as blocking out, we don't even go out and make contact let alone block out, and it doesn't nearly end there with lack of fundamentals.
