Letter to Editor-Rutgers Should Shut Down Football Program

I wonder if his company got a fee from the SL for writing that letter.

You got to think, what really motivated this asshat to take the time and write that hogwash?

What is his true agenda?
I can't believe they printed that.... what an instigater looking for attention. How about woman in Marine Corps combat units...for dangerous..but FB is what they focus on..crazy folks get the forums.

army eh?

His motivation, his kid probably didn't get into Rutgers.

Part of this is the Adminstration's fault as the message is not getting out there. How it is presented is key. Provide the football budget costs and expenses only, stand alone. Do same for each sport. When other sports show a deficit you will not hear the criticism. Personally I would like to see men's crew, swimming etc reinstated as to me that is part of the college experience and reflects the old ivy image. It must be subsidized as everything in the budget is including every single student that attends. We could do without the state aid, be private, but would charge more and not fulfill the mission of a state University of an affordable education. Personally I wish we would, then all the BS from the outside would stop.

We all know the old definition of insanity: Keep doing the same thing and expecting different results. So let’s think out of the box regarding Rutgers’ football.

The Press reported that it will cost $5 million to change coaches, and the program had a $36.3 million shortfall in 2014. And full Big Ten revenue is not available until 2021.

Add to that the increasing number of serious injuries inherent in this sport (deaths at the high school level and what pro team hasn’t lost many starting players during the season) and one could postulate that football, similar to what happened with boxing, could be in a downward spiral.

What an opportunity, then, for Rutgers to set an amazing precedent and drop the football program altogether. That action would put Rutgers on the map. The money saved could be redirected to the true purpose of a university — education.

I guess we found out @derleider name and location.

As much as we disagree with this guy, please remember not to threaten to do any type of property damage to someone's business or residence. And that includes using the Internet to interfere with his business. This board is not as anonymous as some might believe. If there is actual damage and you have a post threatening to do that type of damage the aggrieved party and law enforcement might look to you. Courts have been leaning towards forcing these types of sites to provide account information, including IP addresses, to plaintiffs. Just saying.

What a crock! The more you post , it is apparent that you are the one without an ounce of sense. You engage in a let's win at all cost, scorch the earth criticism campaign and then hold up Al Golden as the poster boy of Rutgers football.

Yes win at all costs . Hire the best coach we can that will win games . This isn't rocket science

Agreed. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and there is no need to retaliate in any way. The most effective way is to comment below the letter or send your own letter to the editor. APP.com only lets you comment through your facebook login. Anyone want to offer a rebuttal?

It'll always be a money-loser (but for those select few who actually turn a profit), but at this point, the justification for everybody else seems to be using football simply as a vessel for marketing/advertising. Every school has to decide how much money they feel they can lose before it's no longer worth it, and the justification for a successful team is maximizing the visibility of your "advertisement."

Football and MBB turn profits at most P5 schools. Even RU's revenue sports, with our less than stellar performance lately, help offset the cost of other programs. If you drop football, the subsidy will go up not down. Additionally, the B1G will throw us out if we don't have a FB program, so we'll lose additional revenue by dropping to a lower level conference. If we want to save money (temporarily), drop all athletics and shutter the rec centers. Even this is only a short term fix b/c some research money will go away when our B1G membership goes away and enrollment will suffer (who wants to go to a college without sports or rec centers to save 1k in fees?).

Alternately, we can build competitive programs, continue to bring in larger amounts of conference payments and larger donations, enjoy the academic benefits of being in the Big Ten, and build a reputation of excellence in both academics and athletics.

Not spending money on revenue sports is the definition of penny-wise, pound-foolish.

The money would not be redirected towards education. They money would not be there. My father has been a professor at Rutgers for 4 decades and has this fight with academics all the time. He is a strong supporter of athletics.

I can't say anything. I have a close relative (RU Grad) who believes RU should drop football and use the money to reinstate Fencing.

Football in a downward spiral similar to boxing????? Really????? The NFL owns one day of the week and college football another.

I couldn't agree more. The school needs to better present how the department works and what is actually going on. They need to get their accounting practices in line with other p5 state schools. They need to get the message out that football and basketball are revenue neutral, and the other sports result in an athletics shortfall. They need to explain that investment is necessary right now, and how the Big Ten is going to change the school's financial situation in the future.

To be clear, Rutgers does have a problem. But the problem is not expenses. The problem is that football and basketball are not successful enough to generate enough revenue to carry the other sports like they do at other schools. So the subsidy is certainly evidence that things aren't working like they should. But the answer is not "stop throwing money away on football." That would make the problem worse, not better. People need to understand that the school literally needs to make football and basketball programs competitive to have any shot at getting the finances under control.

Without a football program we don't get the B1G revenue.
MOre or less this - either we shouldn't have sports at all, or we should invest enough to have a FB and BB program that generate enough revenue combined with conference payouts to keep the program in positive territory.

It appears that the Republicans are nominating Trump for President while the Democrats are nominating Hillary. I think that indicates there are a lot of people who are at least that stupid.
I'd doubt we could trump Trump for president...lol..don't ever count on the intelligence of the american public.

Uneducated opinion! But unfortunately one that is shared by too many residents of NJ. This is the residual damage that occurs when the local papers always put the Sports in a negative light. So hard to overcome!!!!

I knew this was coming. The B10 will in a NY or should I say NJ second kick us out of the B10. Then Democrats will say "the hostile take over of UMDNJ was to make you a more prestigious university hence the B10 invite and now you're out!" If the football program goes away and you're kicked out of the B10 they will single handedly have every reason to strip you of your autonomy and force Rutgersto become a private university.

Well the guy isn't wrong when he said the money could be redirected toward education - that's the whole point of the university.
I think anyone with an ounce of sense in their brain realizes big -time football at a university is a conflict of interest. But with that said I like football and we should try to win at almost al costs . If 60-70 kids don't really belong academically here and get a shoddy education so be it .
No you're wrong. If you disbanded the football program than you would have to subsidize the other sports more. The football program generates money to keep Field Hockey, Gymnastics, Lacrosse etc going.

Thank you....what a dumb post that was.

Fortunately alums with these opinions are in the minority.
Where do these ridiculous thoughts come from.....drop the moneymaker and spend money...even a 10 yr old would be that uninformed. Only Cuse fans would suggest such silliness.

It comes from people who can't be bothered to check the facts before giving an opinion. The read the headlines and swallow hook, line, and sinker, the agenda being put forth by people like our friends at nj.com and NSL.

Perfect response, I feel the same, still laughing.

And as someone that travels quite a bit in business circles, RU Football has been exponential for brand awareness for Rutgers both geographically and academically. It also has helped with more accurate awareness of what NJ is all about, not Jersey shore and Goodfellas/Sopranos (btw luv both).

If RU spends what they'll need to spend to be competitive in the Big Ten, there will be a constant stream of opinions making similar arguments against the spending. People here should get used to it and, IMO, just ignore it.

There will ALWAYS be people unhappy with spending on athletics. They are not going away. It would be nice if the administration addressed it now and then so that the general public is made equally aware of the positives of having a big time athletics program. But beyond that, there's not much to be done about it.

The true goal of education, particularly higher education is to train minds to think critically. While I don't think that big time football and a great academic university are mutually exclusive, the letter does make some valid points. Let's not haul out the lynch mob because we disagree with his position.

This letter is so ignorant and misinformed I don't know where to start.

I will just say this - if football and P5 athletics work for academic standard bearers like Stanford, Michigan, and Cal, then the problem is not football the problem is Rutgers.

If this man lived in North Carolina, what are the odds he'd be writing to the local paper requesting the Tarheels football program be shut down? I'm going to say slim to none.

Yeah I'm sure the B1G would love that. And it's 5 years until we get paid and there is no deficit. Relax moron.

I fenced at Ru in 1946,fresh out of Service. No Coach but we had a schedule with other schools. Interesting sport .Cerebral and physical.Nearly killed a good friend of mine ,in High School, when my blade broke and scratched the outside of his neck. Just a couple of inches away from the carotid artery.
