Lonergan fired

Will the ncaa waive the rule requiring transfers to sit out a year when other schools come in to cherry pick players? Will someone steal video and pass it on to espn? I suspect this will all be forgotten in 48 hours.

Not to worry, I'm sure we'll be hearing plenty of Mike Rice & Rutgers in the next few days as the Lonergan story runs thru the news cycle

I will admit he was my favorite candidate of the names discussed. I don't think RU's due diligence sniffed at this and obviously Lonergan did not think this was an issue because he would not have turned us down if he did. I guess GW will need a caretaker. Doesn't Eddie live down there?

This one is going to linger for awhile.....tip of the iceburg.....players (7 freshman) and a kid on an official visit this weekend, stood up cold when Lonergan wasn't around for the dinner with the recruit...

I don't know their roster that well, but I'd guess their starters or top 8 players could help most programs....

Yep they sure could help. Might be a lot of players up for grabs. Local kid, Jaren Sina is on the team

Both Eddie and Lonergan graduated from Archbishop Carroll H.S. in D.C.

Would guess the only serious consideration of Lonergan was on this board. That said, GW is a tough sell--for years, MD and G Town took all he ink, and probably still do. Mike Jarvis was there for a while and had mild success before going to St Johns--he did it with a whole bunch of Russian imports who did their year and were gone. Really, half the team was from Russia and republics formerly part of Russia.
We were not going to get an old-timer like Lonergan or Sendek, but go younger. Something I had preached for years--which meant being pleased by the Mike Rice hire, after he disaster that was FHJ.

I also thought he'd be a good choice and rated him a better candidate than Pikiell.

Me too - if this was 25 years ago, he would have been a great candidate. If this was that long ago, Mike Rice would never have gotten fired.

But we live in the middle of the 2010's. Thank God we hired Pikes

Lonergan's 50 - Pikiell 48

I took a look at their roster & half are Jersey/NY players. Can't help but think there could be a big opportunity here for us if any of those freshman are big time players.

I didn't recognize any names but luckily there is a guy that will know them all....

Where you at Russ?!

Their PG Paulie Jorgensen was my PG on my CYO team growing up. He is really good. Good enough for the Big Ten? Can't really see it honestly. It's a different brand of basketball.

I'm a big fan of Jair Bolden. I love Collin Smith when he doesn't stray more than 10 feet from the basket. Too frequently he thought he was a poor man's Kevin Durant, and that is not his game.

I'm not familiar with the other freshmen on the roster. But with Sina, Cavanaugh and Watanabe they have a good nucleus at GW.

I believe Jorgenson has given up basketball but GW honored his scholarship and he is a student working towards a degree.

Cavanaugh and Watanabe are the two best left and I don't think either is leaving.

Hope Lnergsn lands on his feet.

Fwiw I asked a DC area source and they say that they have not heard any legitimate talk of any of the George Washington players transferring. Which makes sense for now but we'll see where things are near the end of the semester.

I'll do a thread hijack or diversion about Cavanaugh. I know Cavanaugh's family.

Cavanaugh's father was John Cavanaugh, a Div. III all-American at Hamilton College in New York State. The interesting thing is that he was born without any fingers on one hand, only a thumb. Despite that, he had a very good shot and was an agressive rebounder. Of course, he was also taller than almost everyone he played at the Div. III level. If he had a normal hand, I think he would have been a very good player in Div. I.
