Lovie Smith gets nice payday as new Illinois Head Coach

From the lovie side right? Cause from the Illinois side it's a home run. let me see, Bill Cubit or a guy who took an NFL team to the super bowl with Rex grossman? Lovie should still be coaching Tampa but the glazers are another story altogether.

Cause NFL success = college success??...(if you consider .500 success}. Just don't think he's a good coach.

I can see why Lovie took the job..(low pay for the first 2 years...so TB still owes him 10million), and he could coach. Why not? Just don't think its a good fit for either side.

I just don't get how the Illini have struggled in the last decade. They have history, they have money, they have money, then they have some more money, they have conference affiliation, they have populous state, they have local recruiting base. How are they not a dominant team in the B1G, if not the country? Looks like someone woke up and is starting to spend some dollars.

They should have hired Greg. Smith ruined what Greg was building at TB, they could have gotten Greg cheaper, Greg has been in CFB much more recently and Greg is obviously a better coach...I don't understand it.

I think Greg next team will already be a winner with no rebuilding.

He will be able to afford to bring in his coaching staff or the guys he want. Plus, he can walk into the homes of Chicago and their base and be recognized by recruits. He can tell them he can put them on the path to the pros and they will drink the Kool Aide. If he wins a couple of big games his 17 class might be good.

NFL experience. Super Bowl experience. Head Coach experience. Sounds pretty good to hire. May do oky recruiting the entire conference footprint with that background. Especially players who want to get to the pros. He has the knowledge and players will respond.
Esp if he puts a good staff together w a lot of ex pro coaches.

No matter what he does, I think he'll be more successful than Cubit and Cubit, which is about as uninspired a hiring as promoting Kyle Flood. Now, to be fair, the Cubits had some middling success at WMU, but they're not going to help you dominate the B1G West. BTW how odd is it that WMU replaced a target RU HC with a former RU Asst, followed by another RU Asst?
