McCarthy and his players literally had to sneak out of the state under the cover of darkness to avoid being served with the court papers by Mississippi state troopers. As a result, the Loyola-Mississippi State game became a cause célèbre, and every flashbulb in the state of Michigan popped when Harkness shook the hand of MSU captain Joe Dan Gold at midcourt before the game. It was only some time after the game that the Loyola players became aware of the cultural or sociological significance of the event.

Porter Moser took over in 2012 and went 7-23. Two more losing seasons before they turned it around and won the 2015 CBI.

Now they just didn't make the tournament, they're arguably the best mid-major in the country depending on if you count Gonzaga/St. Mary's and how you see them against URI.

They're truly an elite shooting team: 14th in the country in both 2-point percentage AND 3-point percentage, while also playing excellent defense.

P5 with the next longest tourney drought - TCU - 1998. Everyone else in the P5 has been to the tournament this century.

Notable quality mid-major with the longest tourney drought - Duquesne - 1977.
