Lunancy Cam $200,000

Market dynamics, transfer portal closed except for grad transfers. So their stock rises especially when a bidding war ensues which is what happened with Cam.

The original amount floated was Georgetown and $90k. Cam was apparently offered near $300k by Miami but took slightly less to go to UConn.

Right now, it’s been floated that Mulcahy is getting interest at around $100k. The more desperate a team is to fill a slot the higher the number climbs if you have the financial backing to play that game.
If you can pay people this kind of money....you don't really need to put them on scholarship anymore... which means a rich school can have more 'scholarships' than others.

College basketball has changed dramatically with the transfer portal and the NIL.Players can't be considered amateurs because they are getting paid.Roster retention won't last for more than two years for the best players. It will be a continual nightmare for coaching staffs because the emphasis will be on constant recruiting versus player development.Programs with the most NIL money will have a obvious advantage in recruiting .Success/failure of teams can change dramatically year to year based on late decision making by players.

Agreed, we could see a scheme like this in the future.

This has existed forever. Its just out in the open now and all I see are Rutgers fans complaining because we have Caviar dreams and only beer money.
If we were as rich as some of these other schools many on here wouldn't complain as much because we may be on the side of winning in this race. That said, knowing any Rutgers fan they always have something to complain about. We are on the cusp of landing Ace and Harper potentially so something must be going right here to an extent.
To someone else's point, it just makes it harder for a fan because you love your school first and the players playing for it second yet those who stay here to represent the school you have more of an affinity for long term. In the current environment no one has loyalty an that name on the back of the jersey means very little to fans anymore as you don't know if they will be there more than a year. Everyone is a hired gun.

If true man college sports is sooo done.
Paying players was inevitable. The problem is unlike most pro sports there is no structure such as salary caps or bargaining agreement. Until then it will continue to be a free for all.

Its should all be out in the open what each olayer makes
This may come sooner rather than later for public institutions. Contracts may need to be made publicly available if any public money touches the players.

It's not public money. It's private contracts.
Ace Bailey's agreement is no more likely to be made public than my salary.

Rutgers doesn't want it to be made public or a salary cap.
All it would do is pull the Seton Hall and Temples of the world up to us.

Interesting that you post this in a thread where people are claiming to know the exact amount Cam Spencer is receiving, like he sent out a press release. 😂 😂

I gave the guy shit for transferring but damn thats a pay day and if we weren’t paying him 6 figures i can see why he took that deal. Guy is going to make more next year than most people on this board.

Finally we can stop with the sanctimonious “stop hating on them they’re KIDS” posts. These guys are men getting paid.

That will be the balance. As long as it can stay private no one will know. But also may cause the whole system to unwind over time as you can't trust who is doing what.

Why ? It’s not like it’s a public salary . It’s private agreements . Not sure how you can say it should be public . Do your neighbors keep their salary or any other financials public ?

It’s still not the college athletics I’ve known for the last three decades and it stinks.

No loyalty anymore
loyalty went out the window when transferring became easy
NILs just gave a legal payday to the player who transfers.
Cam shouldn't be considered disloyal by RUMBB fans,
but Loyola of Maryland fans might feel that way since Spencer
played 3 years there then transferred to a bigger venue because of his play them got him noticed.
Now he's leaving RU for Connecticut bucks.

Sounds like what he said when he dumpeed the Greyhounds for the Scalet Knights:
“I’ve been in contact with Pikiell for a few weeks, and it was obvious his love of basketball matched mine. We got along right off the bat as far as our passion for the game,” said Spencer, adding that getting to know the returning Scarlet Knights and being made to feel welcome “sealed the deal.”

His dad might have summed up Cam's reason best:
Bruce Spencer confirmed published reports about his son’s next destination when contacted late Tuesday night. Cam Spencer chose Rutgers over Loyola-Chicago after visiting both schools.

“Cam has long-term goals for his basketball career and the Big Ten stage is a more prominent platform on which to display his skills,” Bruce Spencer said. “All the resources available to the programs in the Big Ten is phenomenal. Cam feels he fits well with Rutgers and what they do.”

Just wait till you start seeing inseason transfers.

Without a contract, anybody can leave their job when they want to. It's a free country.

Was it "college sports" when Jimbo Fischer signed a $75 MILLION DOLLAR contract?

What about when the Big Ten and SEC raided fellow conferences just so they could sign higher media contracts?
When the Big Ten stabbed their historic partner PAC-12 right in the back?

But sure - a player getting a couple hundred thousand dollars is the downfall of college athletics all of a sudden.
Was it college sports when jimbo paid half his way at samford to play ball? Your argument is silly. Its the new age argument of im breathing so i deserve the world

I have not been one to be openly critical of players but can we now stop with the “don’t criticize them they’re just kids” mantra?

They are now adults making adult financial decisions. Ima get mine now! Take the pay but now put up with the BS from the fans. You now are cashing a check to play a game so put the ball in the damn hoop or sit your ass down and shut up. Welcome to the real world.

Saying Paul left because message board fans came down on him too hard doesn’t hold weight anymore. Maybe it’s true and that’s his reason but you are now just going to get crap from a different fan base when you refuse to take an open shot, miss one, or disappear in an NIT game. Especially if someone is stupid enough to cough up $100 - 200k like for Spencer.

RU fans are soft compared to blue blood program fans. Same is true vs fans from traditional basketball schools. I guess making the coin softens the blow.

I'd say the argument is actually "you're worth what the market says you're worth".

silly take.

The whole take of college athletes should be paid is that the schools slowly and largely got these kids exposure.

If the schools kept college football/bball small-time, didn't invest in coaches, facilities, training, free housing, food, tuition then there is no college ball.

The take that they're "taken advantage of" simply comes down to the schools got these kids on tv. If you took these kids off TV, then EVERY school would lose money on athletics rather than just the majority losing money on athletics which is already the case.

Now, ask the kids, would you rather be on TV or not on TV? The answer is overwhelmingly on tv. And they have the schools to thank for that level of exposure

He “wanted to be part of a winning culture.” GTFOH with that bullshit. He wanted the money and the playing time. Dude has a beautiful stroke with open looks. Quick hands and smart player but no way he’s a leading scorer for a top 25 team.

We move on.

He doesn't need to be. Only needs to be is good enough from deep to allow us to continue to play for out. He's more than enough to do that.

We've got a lot of old-timers on the board that never complained about the integrity (and how we should go back to the old days) of the game when the NCAA signed a billion dollar rights contract for the NCAA tournament or the Big10 signed a billion dollar contract for the league or the multi-million dollar contracts that HCs get paid for college football and basketball.

The sky is not falling because players now get paid and have some NIL rights and the ability to transfer. It's about time that players got a piece of the pie - College Sports in the past 30 years has been a golden goose for everyone but the players. Its just equitable that they finally got a piece of the pie. We may win some and lose some players because of NIL - that's life!

College sports are on TV because people want to watch the players play.

You can say the same about every sports league. Their investments got them exposure and tv time. Every league started out with the players not earning much. There was also plenty of taking advantage of.

Apparently whomever mentioned the $200k in this thread pulled the number out of his ass. Not saying it's wrong, but it reeks of conjecture.

Pro sports were created for the sole purpose of making money. College was not and still isnt. Most schools lose $

I don’t blame him for taking that dark money. He won’t make it to the NBA. So grab the crumbs while you can. Same for Paul.

I'd say the argument is actually "you're worth what the market says you're worth".
Exactly this. I could demand someone pays me $200k on top of my current salary, but I assure you they’ll only do it if they think I’m worth it. Same with these college athletes.

Anybody who makes the argument that schools are paying these kids because they simply asked for it “because they are breathing” is an idiot. Both have to be true — they have to ask for it, and they have to be worth it.

Once again, you're not making the point you think you are. Not even close.

What was Jimbo's coach at Samford being paid?
How much money was the athletic department receiving?
What were the fans paying to attend games?

So Jimbo was from a time when there was no money and "college athletics was college athletics".
But then he had the chance to get paid and decided he "deserved the world"?
Sounds exactly what players are doing.
Recognizing the money in the sport and requesting accordingly.
Just as Jimbo did.
