If he goes to another B!G I wish both of them nothing but DOUBLE BAD luck.

If he left because of another school negatively recruiting RU ....I wish him BAD luck as well.

But if there was some other reason (personal, or maybe we sent him mixed messages....because we wanted Washington - though we lost him today)....I wish him NO LUCK (neither negative or positive).

I'd like someone close to him who isn't a rap clown to reveal WHY he decomitted / why today? Why not last week when we could have landed Washington?

Sux!

PS Sitting in Portland International Airport ....waiting for Connie to return from trip to Italy / UK with less than 2 hours before TOUCH down!

Come down off the ledge chief. Maybe the staff gave him indications it may be a good idea to keep his options open. Maybe the staff is kicking ass and something bigger and better is in their sights. Now if Mathis decomitted...

I alluded to this as a possibility. But then why let Washington go...unless we were 2nd to Oregon State (I do live half time up here....wasn't he a West coast kid>>>Pac 12)?

Regardless, I HATE decommits ...and won't be hypocritical. I never wish decomitts good luck. Why should I?

And does it really matter...does my support or yours of "he's only 18" mean he won't be successful or as much of jerk regardless of what I say.

if staffs don't Honor verbals, then why should fans expect kids to honor theirs?

Why do some feel its Wrong if a kid gets a better option, but it's great to have the staff get a better option?

Commitment - an engagement or obligation that restricts freedom of action.

Brutal? not so sure - yes Mac looked exciting - really really exciting
- but there was a name that kept lingering in the back of my mind
- Ervin Stepp a 6' 2" guard from Kentucky

If this name does not ring a bell - it is worth looking him up -
http://www.bgdailynews.com/communit...cle_4240ec12-0b61-5a99-ae6f-3bf74bc10baa.html

many many years ago I saw a feature on him on the CBS SUNDAY MORNING - with Charles Kuralt - Ervin was still in high school - but was breaking records right & left - and the question was - how phenomenal will he be when he gets to college - well, amazing as he could be - his game did not translate to greatness in college. In retrospect, many can point out the reasons that it did not - but at the time, many thought he was destined for basketball immortality

Briefly -
When you look at the Kentucky high school basketball record books, former Phelps phenom Ervin Stepp is at or near the top of all the scoring marks. Stepp, who was Mr. Basketball in 1980, scored 3,228 points in his career, including a career average of 40.4, best all-time in Kentucky. (remember this is prior to 3-point era)
Stepp was recruited by some big name schools, but UK wasn’t one of them. Instead, Stepp signed with Eastern Kentucky in April of 1980.
He would later transfer to Alice Lloyd College.

This thread is so foolish

If we can land a big or wing late in the process, this could end up a blessing in disguise.
I have to agree. Although I would of loved watching the exciting Mac, I'm sure having a powerful 4 like Shaq Carter is a better piece to the BB build puzzle since we lose both Freeman & Sa. Now lets go get him!!!

Honestly, I was excited at first when he committed, but I started to have reservations about him based on all the hype videos and the Riff Raff stuff. Made me think of a less talented Corey, with the rap videos and the yearly flirtation with the NBA, and the debate about his commitment to team vs. himself. Maybe he winds up being a great college player and we'll rue this, but maybe he's not really a fit here.

Good grief do you sound in touch with today's youth. Literally every even semi recruited D1 player has hype videos. Macs were more prevalent bc they were awesome. Don't think he's a star but this hurts for sure.

Ignorant and misinformed. Reactions like this are how you make an entire fanbase look bad. Don't be like that, guy.

I'm confused..if we get a player with better offers, what does it matter?

I don't even know why anyone would let this decommitment faze them. But then again I seem to remember this board being pretty upset when uber athletic guard Kwe Parker reopened his recruitment and committed to Tennessee. Man can that kid jump and dunk. I think I saw a mixtape titled: "Kwe Parker is the best dunker in high school basketball"

How'd that work out for him?

Kwe Parker.....I remember checking his stats before transferring out of Tennessee to a JUCO in NC....don't think he ever recovered from that injury and developed a true basketball game.

Unless you've seen a kid play in person in a game or two with good players it's virtually impossible to tell how a kid is going to work out in college------and even then it's a guess.

Highlight tapes are useless------they're highlights.

When some kid releases his lowlights tape online I'll be impressed.

So now highlight tapes are useless? Well we can just look at his offer list which is based on in person evaluation and full game tape..he has a Georgetown offer, and they're a little desperate to land someone at the moment

Again, I see no issue with this if we land someone with more offers. Either Carter or that other guard we're after both fit the bill. Otherwise we may luck out and find a late bloomer guard in the spring.

I'm going with Russ on this one.

Let's get someone better.

Should we go with Russ, or TDIrish?
Lol
I don't think td was calling out Russ. Russ goes to these games. He puts in the footwork. The only one I trust more with evaluation in the Rutgers community is basically the ru coaches

You know what is annoying to me?

Having what seems like 4x the number of posts for someone decommitting than when they committed.

Especially when the kid only has only two ( what you could call) major programs offering

I agree

That was my point.

Russ says no big deal on this decommit.

Irish in this and other thread makes it sound like this is a loss for RU.
I definitely trust Russ and his evals and enjoy reading his posts.

Two very different players. McClung was more competitive, and had a higher character. Also, you can't really judge McClung from his AAU team. They played him off the ball because their starting point was a 4 star. Off the ball would not work well for McClung, and it was not his position at 6 1 and not of huge wingspin.

He probably would have played 15 minutes next season. He had the grit that was needed to build a program. Him decomitting is a not a huge deal, but those kids are hard to find.

If he is so hard to find, why only 2 offers?

No other teams out there trying to build their program?

Russ

In your opinion did we lose Washington to OR State because of timing (we couldn't accept his offer)....or was he a West Coast (OR. State) lean and using Rutgers as a placeholder?

Also, what is your prediction as to who replaces Mac as a recruit?

Thanks

If this is all the bad news there is then "brutal" is an overstatement. It would have been nice to see this athlete develop as a basketball player in scarlet. If he was worried about being buried on the Rutgers roster and end up on Georgetown, then that is a good sign. So far it is ten steps forward, one half step back.

I never spoke to Washington or anyone close to him but, in talking to some people on the west coast, I got the impression that it was a long shot that the kid would go to a school on the East Coast. So the distance + the almost 3 year relationship with an Oregon State coach looks like it was too much for RU to overcome.

I answered your 2nd question in another thread. To read it click HERE

I thought the mods said we weren't pressing Washington based on ships? Care to chime in @Richard Schnyderite

I never said this was a loss for RU----please find that one.

I see a ton of HS Basketball as I'm retired so I never make an opinion on a kid unless I've seen him play.

Now if a kid has UNC , Duke and UK offers I have to assume he's pretty darn good.
