They were actually ok!!! And they totally threw away a good effort with those two mind numbingly awful plays on runs up the middle.

it was way more than 2 plays

You know what....they didn't give up a ton of points. PSU didn't score in the second half until garbage time. The defense gave the offense every chance to get back in the game. They honestly were decent. Not terrible. Not good. Hackenberg couldn't do anything and we were able to get stops when we needed to.

they didn't really need to try to score in the 2nd half, so they went with a simplistic O. they played ball control as we weren't going to score and we couldn't stop a 3rd grade offense anyway.

we never had a chance to get back in the game, that's not on the D as the O couldn't score, but we weren't stopping them if we needed to.

Don't think I've ever heard someone call a defense that gave up 469 yards "actually ok"... especially one that managed zero sacks and gave up 8 yards per carry.

They didn't need to score in the second half (during garbage time), and they had a ton of yards, but take away the long run when our D wasn't set and the field wide open (although still part of the game), even though Penn St. dominated our D line, they scored 21 points. I wish our offense was a little more open during the first half, and that our qb could throw downfield.

The first half breakdown on the long run broke open the game. Hard to give anyone a pass for that.

Defense gave up 28pts at the end of the day. offense put up 3 points. Which unit is really to blame for this loss? Offense and coaching. How many points did offense put up last game? 14. That's not gonna cut it no matter whom you play. Problem is offense more than defense. Don't get me wrong, D is bad but not as much of a sh*t show as the offense and coaching staff.

TTFP has a horrible offense that Temple held to 10 points...UMASS scored 25 on Temple.

Just wait until tOSU and MSU destroy us and Kansas will pick us apart.

This is by far the worst RU team of the bowl era, way worse than 2010 or 2013.

TTFP didn't really do much on offense to warrant anything close to 28 points... we just played "ole!" defense much of the game. How about make a tackle? How about be in position to stop the run? How about get any pressure at all on a shaky QB?

Offense doesn't get a pass, either. Vanilla crap. Rushing up the middle into a wall, again and again and again. Where were the toss sweeps that got overused against WSU? Laviano throwing balls to get his WRs killed. Bad turnovers. Absolutely zero protection from the OLine at times.

We're not very good right now.

The defense didn't play as well as you suggest. Frankly I thought Hackenberg's ineffectiveness at times did more to stop drives than anything Rutgers did. There was no push from the d-line--it looked like they were being manhandled all night. No drive , no push , no ability to shed blockers and penetrate, no pressure on Hackenberg.

We played extremely poorly on both sides of the ball. You could say the offense was worse, but this was a game where the defense was supposed to win it for us. Zero sacks really says it all... Their primary weakness is their OL, which completely handled us.

In addition, they clearly watched what WSU did against us and did similar. Lots off trips, stacked wr and bunch sets with wide receivers blocking. Our players do not he off the blocks and get killed on those plays. Run defense was pathetic... We were conceding 8 yds a play on basic runs

I don't think our D did anything all that great, PSU's offense is just bad. I said this last week when some were saying better get pressure on D or Hackeberg is going to pick us apart. I didn't see the Buffalo game but he wasn't sacked at all in that game and his stats weren't all that impressive. Yesterday we didn't get pressure and I don't think he picked us apart and his stats again were not impressive. 10-19 141yds 1 INT.

They're just not good on offense and I think they'll struggle to score this season. Our D for the most part got no pressure and was getting pushed around. The only reason it wasn't worse is because PSU's offense isn't good.

Even if you take out those runs Penn State still had 201 rushing on 39 carries. You aren't going win many games giving up 5+ yards a carry.

OP is completely off base. The defense was confused and out of position on many many plays. No pressure all night against a weak offensive line.

Pure silliness, we've continued on our path of giving up record amounts of yardage

Could not stop the run and zero pressure on the QB. The defense, especially the line play, was beyond terrible. That being said, the offense was unwatchable. The OL was physically beaten up.

Our D, like our O was dead. I'm scared to play a real team because this will get embarassing very quick.....PSU is not a good team by any stretch and we made them look like a top 25 team yesterday.

I put the wtf defensive plays and the lack of pressure on "fold like a cheap suite when touched" Hackenberg on coaching. Rossi has done nothing to disturb the qb pocket. These last two qbs were not athletic and could not beat you with their feet. They were allowed all the time in the world to make throws. For gosh sakes send blitzers. I'm not a GStard but the guy knew how to disrupt the pocker and how to put players in the right positions to succeed. Our defensive players were confused as hell and that is on coaching or lack thereof. That run up the midle was something out of Pop Warner. Rossi has to be the first to go with others to follow. We have some talent but this coaching is holding the team back from looking competitive. We didn't look like we wanted to win the game yesterday and that is just unacceptable.

GO RU

pretty simple.. RU's D was tired.. as any D would have been. You started shooting gaps and run blitzing.. that is simply what happens when you guess wrong and you're gassed. Your team played better than I thought, if Hack could hit a screen pass we would have had 100 more yards on offense. Your D was pretty effective.. your offense and field position hung them out to dry. Also.. just another sloppy wet game, PSU shut it down in the 2nd half, ball was slippery and Franklin isn't big on running it up.-sg

Make tackles and it is a different game. Lynch 75 yard run and Barkley 54 yard runs--make those first tackles, and PSU has a lot less yards rushing. More concerned about the DL than the secondary at this point. If I had to make a to do list of things to work on:

1. DL pressure
2. Tackling
3. Offensive Line opening holes for our running backs.

I am not making excuses for Laviano, because at some point last night Rettig should have played. But with the protection Laviano had last night, he was in for a tough night. However, seems we are holding back on the deep threat passing, and if everyone is right about Rettig, we would have that going for us, and that might open things up.

have this argument on the PSU board all the time.. if those run were not there they could have turned into 12-13 8 yard runs...ore 2 5 yard runs followed by a 35 yeard run... at some point a D gets gassed and this happens.. you can't leave your D hang out to dry like that.. throw on the PSU/Temple tape for example... look at PSU vs. anybody the last 2 years.-sg

The defense looked great some plays, and looked awful on a bunch of others. Didn't see much of a middle ground. The thing is, though, that the offense was awful all game. Nothing to even point out as positive really besides the effort of a few guys (Hicks, Agudosi come to mind)
