Mag is a very valuable player on defense and on offense is better shooting close to the basket than from the 3 point line,

With Cam and Mulcahy available for wide open 3’s. Once in goes into him it never comes back out!

I’m not sure if it was Al Leiter or Rick Reed who said it, but one of them said they changed the way they pitched (looser, bolder at times) because they knew nothing was getting through the left side of the infield with Rey Ordonez and Robin Ventura there. They were worth Piazza’s bat and more reliable than any hitter.

Especially on the fast break. He's a turnover machine there. I'd like to see him post up more, honestly.

There was a possession where he was switched on their PG and harassed him so well and shut him down. He's very good defensively

His post game is pretty decent too, but we haven't seen post touches lately. Purdue has a big 4 so it wasn't a size mismatch there but it would have been an athletic mismatch

Mag is absolutely crucial to our press and he is the primary reason it is elite. We are an elite top 3 defense in the country with the best pressing team since the Arkansas Nolan Richardson’s teams and our great Final Four teams. Must play that way to continue to win and dominant teams and it gets us out on the break where we are much better. The half court game against Purdue was not ideal in the second half .

Mag seems to lose spatial awareness when he gets the ball in the open floor and really gets down on himself when he misses a bunny or an easy shot.He had a great steal last night and then started dribbling not realizing where he was and the ball was swiped from him for a turnover back just passed half court. He has to stay positive mentally because he can back down people and hit a 10 footer as well. Getting 5-8 deflections a game , a steal or two , some offensive rebounds and defensive rebounds , plus his harassment on the press is invaluable going forward and when we are at our best

What’s really cool is I’m getting completely comfortable with the skill sets of Mag and Hyatt and what they bring.
Pike manages the two completely different players like a genius
