I asked my daughter (she's been to a dozen or so UMD games in that arena) and she said the volume/crowd was about average. It got pretty loud when UMD made a big play but you can't duplicate the acoustics at the RAC in that big of a venue.
I have to agree with you Lou, for the size of the crowd, it was not as loud as i expected. they have a decibel meter that they show on the scoreboard during some timeouts. the thing is they are blaring music through the sound system and you can’t even hear the crowd . I found it also odd that i didnt see the meter rise above 90.
for the most part it stayed between 80 and 90db whenever I was looking at it. This makes me suspect the meter is not real and just a visual gimmick?
Also, as a point of reference, when im in my seat in sect 304 at the RAC my apple watch consistently gets readings between 95-105db at key points of the game. Im told it’s even louder down on the floor. During this game my watch did not notify me of any excessive noise levels.
I must say the flag over the students was cool and was very loud.
Concerning the arena, it was ok but nothing special. the concourse with the wall of fame, trophies and other displays was pretty nice.
Biggest drawback i encountered was the traffic and parking. It was a total nightmare. I'm glad i left in plenty of time to see the tip off. going to the RAC is a walk in the park compared to the Xfinity center.
Lastly, I was able to attend the Rutgers game at Assembly Hall in Bloomington earlier this year. The arena and the total game experience was far superior to that of the Maryland game.
Im glad I went but Im not sure ill go back, unless it a big game.
