Maryland Gets Subpoenaed re: Hoops Investigation

Anybody shocked by this?

I obviously have no clue, but here's what I think the two subpoenas are about:

1) Diamond Stone received money from agents while playing for Maryland.
2) Recently a player was all but committed to Maryland, but mysteriously switched and committed to Kansas at the last minute, and somebody wants to know why.

I don't think there is any issue with anything Maryland did. But of course I don't know jack about the details or the smoke-filled rooms. They could be passing gold bars to every player for all I know...

Not really.

In one Yahoo! Sports story last fall (the one with the ledger), Diamond Stone's name appeared.
In a Kansas City Star article there was reporting about a bidding war for Silvio De Sousa, who is at Kansas. The key paragraph in that article is this:

Between the commitment and signing, the documents detail an exchange between Gatto and his associate, who said he would need to make “another $20,000 payment” to the guardian to “help get the student-athlete ‘out from under’ the deal to attend the school sponsored by the rival company.” It isn’t known whether the payment was made.

Which makes it appear that adidas had to give De Sousa's guardian more money so his guardian could repay the shoe company that sponsors the other school.

De Sousa's commitment to KU was considered a "surprise" by many who covered his recruitment.

If that's correct, not good for Maryland...

Hmm I wonder what is in Maryland's non-responsive records.
I took the "responsive records" phrase to mean phone records from University issued phones and emails.

If they turn those over there may not be any University non-responsive records.

Then again I'm nowhere close to being a lawyer so...

They are probably investigating how Turgeon can possibly do so little with so much talent.

Nothing happens unless Rutgers is involved. You don’t hear anything now about Louisville, unc, Arizona or any program who allegedly broke rules. I wouldn’t worry much if I’m Maryland.

What exactly are we supposed to hear now?

Louisville got sanctioned and is on probation for the call girl scandal. NCAA hasn't moved on the Brian Bowen situation yet.

The UNC fake classes investigation ended last year.

I, for one, did not believe the media reports about Sean Miller and Ayton. Said as much on this board, especially since ESPN hadn't heard the purported recorded phone calls.

Yep. Good for Maryland. At least it looks like they are trying to win in college basketball

I think what everyone here is trying to say is we had a guy throw some basketballs and use homophobic slurs and it's national news with a parade of news trucks on campus for over a month. Complete with in depth expose's from every major news station denigrating Rutgers. Just not seeing the same hoopla around fake classes, hookers and paying players under the table. Now if this stuff were to happen at dear old RU the media bonanza would be of epic proportions and nonstop. Hell I'm sure even Telemundo would get in on the action.

Being close to NYC is good for recruiting (so I've seen on this board) but it is also bad when you have a scandal. National media doesn't have to drive a crew across country and put them up in a bunch of hotels. They can get in a truck and drive over to you in, what, an hour?

Plus there was video evidence of what happened which, if history is our guide, is catnip to TV news departments. It gives them something to put on TV other than just a talking head and a graphic about what happened. Also, IIRC, in addition to the video there was an assistant coach who claims he reported what was happening to the A.D. and the A.D. didn't take any action until he saw the videos (scandal got bigger, this is actually when I learned about what was going on). Then the assistant was fired and sued for wrongful termination (scandal got huge).

There is no chance that won't get saturation coverage, it would be worse today with social media having become what it is now. If someone made a movie of that in 2011 nobody would go see it because they wouldn't believe all of those things could happen.

No video, Rice gets a 3-game suspension, hefty fine and takes anger management classes. That's a local story that likely doesn't have much shelf life nationally, despite proximity to NYC and national media.

The Louisville call-girl scandal coverage was very steady, so much so that people I knew in Gainesville were asking me about it and they don't give two monkey nuts about college basketball. Matter of fact, that is when I knew the story had reached critical mass.

Not sure what’s true but the fact that Unc players said they didn’t attend one class and got straight As is insane. Sure, the kids could have attended the classes I’m sure? It might be sour grapes when they left after two years, blew through their NBA money and now have no college degree but I do believe that unc failed and it’s crazy they got off.

Rutgers would never make it through anything like that. That’s all I’m saying

UNC should have had an entire book of sanctions dropped on them.

Agreed NC, PSU and Baylor should be shut down in sports

Why not throw Louisville in there as well
Baylor employees covered up rape and a murder

PSU employees covered up child rape

UNC had fake classes ( I don't know how they didn't even lose accreditation)

Louisville got some guys laid (by some fugly call-girls). Lower level than the other three.

Kansas subpoenaed and, unlike Maryland, refuses Yahoo! Sports Freedom of Information request

Didn't Georgia have some semi-fake classes towards a degree in PE to keep their guys eligible? Seem to remember the coach's son taught some of them. The exams had questions like how many halves in a basketball game? What are the school colors of Georgia U? Like that.

Not sure why some posters put down Maryland hoops--they have won one NC, and under Lefty, were really good most years. They actually signed Moses Malone and had him on campus when the college year started, but the ABA came calling and the rest is history. Spent my working life in the DC-MD area and was looking forward to seeing him play.
