They are so screwed?

Will be interesting to see who Maryland hires. Commence board meltdown if they get Longo or Mazzone? Although it is looking like Mazzone will be OC at Arizona:

Interesting comment in link, perhaps a reflection on Drew Mehringer? Texas was to hire Mazzone as an offensive QC coach: "Even though the attempted hire didn’t work out for Texas head coach Tom Herman, the pursuit of Mazzone indicated that Herman is looking for ways to improve the offensive coaching staff."

Did not realize how youngMaryland's OC was. 34 years old, and 2 years of OC experience at Arkanasas State before Durkin hired him. They seemed to do pretty well on offense despite being down to their 10th string QB.

I don't take the post as related to McNulty as much as just being aware of coaching movement out there and what's happening outside the RU bubble. It's good to know what others our doing etc..and this is also a division mate too.

I don't think Mazzone/Longo will end up there. I think they're pretty settled in their spots. I don't think Mazzone will leave Sumlin's side at the moment and Longo is probably being paid well at Ole Miss considering the big assistant pool there.

As to Bell at Maryland, two years is a little light on experience but from the bio the numbers he put up there with Blake Anderson as HC look pretty good. So it might not be ideal but the productivity is there. The only thing is you'd like to see it over a longer time frame but circumstances aren't ideal all the time. He's sort of like my Graham Harrell suggestion, not a ideal but a decent option.

Also news at Washington making a member of their staff, Jimmy Lake, co-DC taking over play calling duties from their current DC Pete Kwiatkowski. Kwiatkowski has been a good DC with Peterson since his BSU days so it was kind of surprising. But it's an example of trying to groom coaches from within the staff as a form of continuity like I've mentioned in the past. I think Peterson is pretty lucky to be able to have this setup. Lake has supposedly turned
down other P5 DC opportunities to stay at Washington and Kwiatkowski has been a good DC so it's selfless of him to step aside for Lake, even though I'm sure he'll be involved.

Who do you see as viable candidates for the open Maryland job?
Just go through the list we had and who is not hired?
Probably not Ryan Carty.
Brian Wright?
Bob Stitt?
Todd Fitch?

Also, found the Mazzone as a QC at Texas interesting--wonder why they would not have just hired him as a full offensive coach?

I thought Maryland made a nice OL hire by bringing in Stinespring from JMU who had worked for many years under Beamer at Va Tech. They will find someone and probably won't labor as long as we did to fill the opening. I agree that Mazzone and Longo are unlikely.

BTW DM was supposedly in the running for the OC position at Houston this year. Not sure how close he came but he only the WR coach with maybe some type of co-OC designation. I would think if Herman was seeking help via Mazzone it was not a direct indictment of DM.

I'm not so familiar with their staff to know if there's anyone who could be elevated. I wouldn't expect Fitch or Carty to pop up. Wright is possible because he's a good candidate for most current P5 OC openings and Stitt would be outside the box but you know Durkin has put former HCs on his staff before so who knows.

We are so Scre... oh wait, it is a different team this time...

Lets see who he gets to replace him with.

“Board meltdown”? I doubt it; would be pretty pathetic actually.
In hindsight, board is a bit much. Maybe I am thinking about some of the losers on the RU Football Facebook page who thought we should have been hiring Longo or Mazzone or some other marquis name. I think McNulty is going to hit it out of the park.

probably won't labor as long as we did to fill the opening ?

- realistically - it was not exactly a "labor" of great duration - it just seemed like it to those following the speculation on the various 'possibilities'

Tuesday December 19th Jerry Kill announces his retirement
Thursday January 11th John McNulty reported as the selected new OC
so, it was a whole 24 days in total - but many many of those days were not exactly 'prime' candidate interaction and interview days - and in reality, the "selection" was made in less time - but the release of the identity was held pending completion of some administrative activities.
Things actually proceeded in a reasonable manner - given that this spanned the Early signing period, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve New Year's Day, the cornucopia of bowl games (involving some candidates) the NFL playoffs (involving the final choice)

lol we hardly "labored"...SMH

From a UMD fans perspective it was just a matter of time before Walt moved on.

He's always been considered one of those "young rising stars".

I just assumed he would be leaving to become an HC, not for another OC position but whatever.

So you think Ash just started looking for an OC when Kill announced? Seemed to me it was rumored to be likely for quite sometime before 12/19. Yes I think we labored a bit to find a OC. The bottom line is that the attractiveness of our OC position was near the bottom of the totem pole of potential openings and thus we needed to either move down to the list of truly viable candidates (Carty, Fitch, McNulty) more quickly or wait it out. I am not trying to kill the McNulty hire here but I think the majority of the board thought the search was getting protracted given what was going on around it at other schools.

Yeah, that was a good hire, and probably had a lot to do with the decision by the two best linemen to stay for another year rather than jump to the NFL.

As for Bell, I know I'm in the minority but he didn't impress me. I know he was handicapped by the QBs available, but, I dunno, just never seemed like the genius he was made out to be.

Of course, the fact that he was hired by Florida State is even more evidence that I don't know what I'm yakking about...

An awful lot of assuming in that post.
What do you have to back up the statement in bold.
Longo was mentioned. He did not move. He does not count.
Mazzone hung out and waited for his boss to settle in before going with him. He does not count.

So who on the original list passed on the RU job due to what you say in the "attractiveness of our OC position"? IMO, McNulty was always near the top, and he, Longo and Mazzone had the greatest breadth of experience overall and experience coaching QBs of the other candidates. RU and Ash also wanted someone who would not bolt in one or two years, and that factored in. Nothing is guaranteed there, but Maryland just saw their whiz kid bolt for FSU.

Sorry, but I can't agree with you here.

Big Ten Commissioner Delaney can’t be thrilled with a Big Ten assistant taking a lateral job at an ACC program. ACC football > Big Ten football. Will be interesting if the Terps follow Rutgers lead (“It’s better the second time around”) and hire an OC who was on their payroll, previously.
