Say what we want about his occasional turnovers but my good this guy is a 1 man trap on defense he will trap the ball in one corner and if they make the pass he is there to trap the next guy when he receives the ball just love it he is amazing; Now we may occasionally beat off the press but the number of turnovers we create has been amazing and even if we don't get a turnover off the press itself it leads to the opposing team not to be able to get into their offense and a number of 30 second violations!!

does Mag have 2 more years after this season? I read someone knock his defense for being slow to close out on 3 point shooters, but he sure looks like he is playing relentless physical defense to me. If he can just marginally improve offensively and as a ball handler, he's going to be a major factor and a big pain in the ass the next 2 years. He was clutch and tough at the end of last night's W.

He is B10 defensive player of the year so far. Amazing how disruptive he is. He gotta be tired after games.

He is something to watch when they press and lockdown in the half-court too. Tremendous effort.

Pressing with Mag maximizes Mag's value. I'd love to ask Pikiell how many times he's watched Moneyball. The way he coaches reminds me of the line in that movie about looking at what players CAN do and not what they CAN'T do. Pike finds ways to put players in positions to make the most of what they CAN do and minimize what they can't. It's awesome to watch.

Mag is the best presser I've ever seen and he is absolutely relentless with it. It takes a LOT of energy to do what Mag does out there on the press

He also seems to NEVER foul pressing and trapping despite being very aggressive with his hands everywhere

Imagine how good he will be in 2 years

I’d like to fight anyone complaining about anything related to Mag’s defense.

Agree 100% but is it me or were the refs whistling him for some ticky tack bullspit last night? Mainly in the half-court. But man, he's the energizer bunny on crack on steroids.....and soooooo much fun to watch.

And let's not forget he might just be our best rebounder, too.

The steal after the inbounds and bucket were enough to make me bust out laughing at the Turtles....

Does turn the ball over? Yes, but he defense more than makes up for those mistakes, he is excellent on the press and so valuable to this team.

Also, when Maryland and other teams successfully break the press they take almost 10 seconds to do it, so now they’re a little tight on time and maybe a little flustered having already expended some effort just to get over half court.
A lot of good things accrue from that press even when it doesn’t result in a steal.
I also love how many looks we have when we press full court. Multiple zones plus man plus the constant and relentless switching. It is really is fun to watch, at least if you’re Rutgers fan.
It must be a nightmare for everyone else…but I’m OK with that.

Totally agree. It's amazing how many coaches stick with one defense like it's a religion, when changing defenses causes so many issues. Switching defenses is a huge impact a coach can have on a game and most coaches just say "nah, we'll just stick with half-court man-to-man".

Mag has the best chance at an NBA look excluding cliff.

Length and athleticism are there. A little better jumper and he’s a 2nd round pick.

He’s the real deal defensively, and when you combine his efforts with the reigning DPOY Caleb plus the B1G steals leader Cam, you can see why we are one of the elite defensive teams in the country.
