McMurphy: Golden & Ash are ....

I'd prefer Ash over Golden. Pair him up with Cincy OC Eddie Gran. That would make a nice combo.

SB Nation saying Ash wants to remain at OSU. Another report said he was calling his recruits saying he wasn't going anywhere.

im so underwhelmed. I don't know why I always expect more. we're RU after all. btw, ash has search firm written all over him.

People need o stop listening to the hype. People were actually throwing names like Josh McDaniels out there. Let's use our brains here folks.

Both guys mentioned in this thread would be very very good hires.

So they will replace Flood with a coach who was so hated that people flew plane banners over the stadium. Only at RU.

I guess on the upside....Rutgers fans have already proven themselves too cheap to rent an advertising plane. So we will have that going for us.

I agree.

A few weeks ago these were flying around all over the country.

Your definition of "very good" must be different from mine.

They could replace Flood with a bag of rocks and it would be an improvement. Golden never should've taken the Miami job, the sanctions and the lack of support made it an uphill battle from day 1.

I'm not some dummy tossing around Mcdaniels' name. Golden is an average coach at best -- he's proven it. more than that, the sight of him turns my stomach with his goofy hair and stupid tie. I like authenticity and he seems to be trying so hard to be someone else. as for ash, I'm sure he's a fine coach. but, he's certainly not a hot name. I would like to think that we could pull someone that anybody else is interested in other than cuse. it says to me, "hey, he's a good young coach who won't cost a lot of money." like I said, I'm underwhelmed.

Maybe we can borrow the banners from Miami fans.

If it comes down to these two I'll take Al Golden only because he'll be able to out recruit Ash in this area.. But man oh man we could have kept Flood and saved at least a million or several millions. The lesson to be learned here is that when posters shoots there mouth off with "I don't want him representing my university" or "Not a Rutgers man" or "I'm ok with 7-5 or 8-4 record" people listen!! Well if true this is disappointing news.

I dont know that they are VERY good hires - but they are the kind of hire that a mid-level P5 program makes. MD has already done it. Illinois and Minnesota didnt even get that far - they promoted assistants from within (i.e. they took coordinators from middling to bad teams instead of top teams). Missouri is looking at MWC HCs - but the MWC is very down right now - Boise is the highest ranked in Sagarin at 50 - it would be like us looking at Willy Taggert and Bob Diaco. Virginia is still aiming higher - but lets see how that ends up. Iowa State and Syracuse have or likely will end up with MAC flavor of the year types. Is South Carolina going to do better than an assistant from a high end P5 school? Doesnt look like it.

Reality is that there just arent that many high end coaches that are willing to move to mid-level schools even if there is money. Maybe we get lucky and Dan Mullen just is dying to get back into this area and we throw a ton of money at him - but short of that who is there that would turn heads - Rhule and Herman seem fine waiting another year. Richt looks like hes going to stay in the South if he coaches at all next year. Are there other top 25ish P5 coaches who would take alot of money to come to RU? I cant think of any obvious choices who would want to rebuild a program in an impossible division rather than continue with whatever success got them RUs attention in the first place.

Basically - unless you get really lucky - as a mid-level program its a crap shoot even if you have money to throw around because as Ive said a million times - if you have the money to lure a high end coach, so does someone else who is better than mid-level.

I'd definitely pick Golden over Ash. Unlike Ash, Golden is known as a great, charismatic recruiter and he has connections to our area. Ash doesn't have any connections here and is not known as a recruiter. If Golden gets hired here don't worry, his D-coordinator from Miami is not coming with him.

Ask any fan from any fanbase around the country if Al Golden is a very, very good hire.

If the last sentence is true then I am not as upset.

Actually, when I look into my crystal ball, it says that those two are going to be two of the hottest names in the 2016 coaching hot stove. I think both are up-and-coming, and Taggart had USF playing like a top-15 team over the last month of the season.

Ash would be a good hire.

Again, I've said this in multiple threads now - did anyone WATCH Miami play football these last couple of seasons? Did anyone watch the 58-0 dumpster fire loss to Clemson? The program was a disaster, and whether that's all Golden's fault or the mess he inherited is kind of irrelevant.

If Golden had been fired from Miami 2 or 3 years ago and was a respected assistant somewhere where he rebuilt his rep, I could almost see giving him another chance, much like the idea that you can rehire Schiano two years removed from his NFL debacle. But you can't hire him now.

Yes - and in fact we are supposedly looking at DIaco. My point is - the guys Missouri is looking at arent Herman or Rhule or Fuentes level HCs - they are like the kind of guys we could be or are looking at. None of these mid-level schools are likely to pick up coaches signficantly better than who we will get - be it Golden or Schiano or Cristobal or some coordinator or an mid-level AAC HC.

I actually am surprised we arent looking at Taggert. He was good at WKU and has turned it around at USF.

Here is what a Cane fan has to say about Golden:

I'll give you some reasons from a canes pov:
_____________________________________
- very average gameplanner.
- intractable philosophy on defense - square peg round hole
- micromanaged his staff
- didn't understand how to recruit sofla talent
- beefed up his players unnecessarily to fit an antiquated plodding scheme that was slow to react
- teams consistently had mental mistakes
- evolved into a spin master/car salesman kind of guy
- always said "starts with me" but proceeded to throw players under the bus

I'll give him his due - he stuck it out through some tough times and is a tireless worker but I question where his work efforts were aimed at (his ridiculous infamous 300 page binder that's filled with newspaper clippings, quotes, rules on how to be gentlemen, etc).

Sounds like a lousier version of Greg Schiano
