Here are a few links discussing Ken Whisenhunt's offense (McNulty was TE coach):

  • lots of "trips" formations
  • bunch sets(!)
  • quick passes out of those sets
  • scat backs in slots
  • utilizes a lot of hot routes - the philosophy is to send eligible receivers on routes as opposed to keeping some in to block
  • can still run downhill and hit you in the mouth (Steelers days)
  • gadget plays (anyone remember Antwaan Randel-El's pass to Hines Ward in the Super Bowl? fellow Eagles fans, how about the flea-flicker to Larry Fitzgerald in the NFC Championship Game?)
The TL;DR is Ken's offense utilizes a ton of spread formations but has deep roots in the power run game. IMO, it is not a spread offense, but I can live with it as I'm a big fan of Whisenhunt's approach to offense in general. If McNulty implements half of that stuff (and can recruit/develop), the offense should be at least watchable this year.
