***MD '16 DB Damon Hayes to Rutgers***

Looking at more sites it appears that his 40yd time is a little slow. Now one site said that his 40 time has improved since March. So it could be that he had a slower time in March but has worked on his speed and his times are improved. I know that RU times these guys on campus so if they felt he was too slow he would not have been offered.

Published stats on high school athletes - might be 'variable' - and can quickly become outdated as start of Junior year - might have just turned 16 years old ... and a lot can change quickly
247 - just designated Hayes as "3-stars" .. but they seem to have old specs on him - Ht 6-0 Wt 178 40 4.70

Here's what looks like very recent stats on Damon Hayes -
"Nike SPARQ Verified" - would guess that it came from the Nike camp that Hayes made a splash at in the Washington DC area back in mid April.

Height - 6'2"
Weight - 183lbs
40yd Dash - 4.58

Camps vs. on the field. I never played football but I'd think you could have all the talent in the world, but maybe when real hitting is involved I could see a young kid playing under his ability just for mental reasons. I don't know if that's something you overcome, but I'd think it's possible you give that guy a D1 scholarship and suddenly he's got all sorts of new confidence. Maybe that translates to the field. Could be what they are hoping and willing to take that shot early.

He plays very physically on his tape. I would think that WR and CB might be the two easiest position to evaluate in shorts and t-shirts.

You always have to remember that these are still young athletes who can make major improvements physically and skill wise in a short period of time. It will be interesting to see how he plays a senior.

I know for a fact he is not 6'2". Flood is about 5'11 and Hayes is just a little taller than Flood in the picture, definitely not 3 inches taller.

I'm hearing the County Legaue he plays in is a run first league with a number of very fast teams. He's used to playing in the box, being physical and making tackles. Based on stats I saw, he averaged 3 tackles per game during his Junior season which is his first season playing varsity

He looks like he has 3 inches on Rossi, who is at least as tall as KF. Seems like he is closer to 6'2" than 6'0".

247 had him at a 40% Tenn commit prediction-anyone understand how they would come up with that?

They just calculate the % based on the predictions of their analysts. If 2 out of 5 predictions say UT then you get a 40% chance. You always have to look at the timing of the predictions, sometimes they are old and don't reflect the current state.

it is not like they just became aware of this young man 48 hours ago - It is not like he just showed up on Saturday and dazzled at the Knight Skills Camp & they just got all giddy & delirious over over him. They have been in touch - have been watching - they had a very clear sense of what his strengths might be & no doubt had watched ample amounts of video of his in-game play...
They have been doing their homework:
(1.) as mentioned - Rutgers had been recruiting Hayes since the start of the spring evaluation period. He even visited for The Scarlet-White game in April.
(2.) E.J. Barthel and Darrell Wilson (and no doubt in conjunction with Flood) have had him on their watch list for some time & obviously were familiar with his work
(3.) Damon Hayes opened some eyes during combine season, winning defensive back MVP honors at greater Washington D.C. Nike Opening camp in mid-April
(4.) In late May at the Washington D.C. area "Prime Example and Perfect Performance" Showcase he was recognized - and here's what was said - "Hayes is a big defensive back with great length and pretty good footwork. He made his fair share of plays on Saturday but the most impressive thing about him is his quickness for being that tall and long, and the fact that his instincts are above average. Maryland is the biggest school showing interest in him so far but expect Hayes to go to camps to try to get offers."

- with all of this - watching & communication & interacting - and then the outstanding performance at the Knight Skills Camp - it would seem that they got a pretty good read on the young man - about as good as you will be able to get with any recruit ...
Would seem that Flood & Company are very very positive that Damon Hayes is a very high caliber prospect -
Coach Wilson visited him during spring evaluations. This kid was a priority.

I admittedly didn't phrase my question too clearly. I'm interested as to how Tenn was/is considered a 40% likely destination (at least at that time) since he didn't have an offer from Tenn. How would 247 determine Tenn may potentially offer and, if so, what the likelihood is for him to then commit? Does 247 talk to various coaching staffs about recruits on their radars but not yet offered? Just curious.

The Tenn predictions were from early 2014. Not sure what was the reasoning at the time

What do all those have in common? They are not in pads and are non contact drills. There is no tackling involved, they are not making reads. They are not playing multiple coverages. It just one on one competition. However football is played in pads. Teams play zone and man coverage, There is tackling involved. There are reads to make. If his game filmed matched his ability in shorts and t-shirts then yes he would have offers from schools. Rutgers is obviously willing to take a gamble on the kid. Most schools are not. Could they win big? That is possible. As you know for every win there are 10 times as many who don't turn out. Hopefully he will beat the odds.

As opposed to evaluating a kid by his highlight tapes? No offense but the camps are every bit as good if not better than the HUDL tapes these coaches/recruiting services are watching. Or do you think 25 guys at Rivals or all these coaching staffs are pouring over thousands of hours of game tapes to properly evaluate each and every kid?

To plagiarize a bit from a post I just saw, if I put together my highlight tape you would think I could shoot a 59 on the golf course, got 100% on every test I ever took and never yelled at my kids.

And welcome Damon!

Here we go again, recruiting services rolling the dice... Wished that we could have seen a few games in the fall first, and I'm not sure that the stats are all there...

Welcome Damon!

Scout has Hayes as the #7 player in Maryland and the #13 CB in the east region. His coach said he ran a 4.74 laser time which is not fast.Only a junior and proper training may be able to get into the 4.5s in college.

To keep things in perspective, Brad Hawkins ran a 4.82 laser time and Juan Johnson another 4* ran a 4.79 Laser time last year.

I agree that his times could improve with training, but I don't trust or agree with Scout's rankings. There was just no reason for recruiting services to take a gamble this early.

Welcome to the Banks Sir Damon.
Your seat at the Scarlet Table awaits your signing in to claim your reserved spot.
You will be part of the beginning of the Scarlet Knights becoming one of the top B1G FB programs.

Dude is a prototype corner now. 6'2" 195 and can run. You can see why Ash wanted to keep him in the fold, and why his recruitment really picked up. His senior year film is stellar. Is aggressive, tackles well, and has good hands from playing receiver too. I'm guessing he sees the field real soon.
