San Francisco Giants pitcher Chris Heston threw a no-hitter against the Mets at Citi Field and i found it quite interestining that all four play-by-play calls (Giants tv/radio & Mets tv/radio) mentioned it being in the media capital of the world, the pressure of handling it in nyc market, the biggest stage, and all eyeballs on him...

A few years ago Victor Cruz echoed the same sentiment about being able to not only play in front of his home but also the media capital of the world....

There is only one major football university that lives in that market, Rutgers.

Maybe some younger guys dont realize it but to have a shot at a B1G championship or a national championship, or to have a Heisman type campaign would be astronomical in terms or coverage and exposure, unlike anywhere else

Oh good, now the douchey (not all) Yankee fans can celebrate again and poke fun at the Mets fans how an uknown pitcher threw a no no.

This can cut both ways. Didn't Rutgers get shut out by Wisconsin in the media capital of the world? I sure hope we can do better against OSU and MSU at home this year with all those potential eyeballs on us.
 
I'm getting tired of this. We are in NJ not NYC. That's not a bad thing but there's a difference.

Except when talking about media, the New York media market includes all of northern NJ (north of Mercer and Burlington counties). So Rutgers is in the State of New Jersey and also in the New York media market.

Pike county in PA is also in the media market it. However just because it some on at Neison media decided to draw the map with it included doesn't mean the NYC media cares. I think he trying to point out that just because some one classified it as part of a market doesn't mean the media in NYC will treat it as local.

Yes they will. They did in 2006 - the only time RU FB has really been good enough to attract casual fans. Mike and the Mad Dog were here. Does (or rather did) it get any more NYC than that?

But also - because the NYC market is so big, the national media also will pay more attention to things that arent important in the NY market (which is why ESPN talks about teh Knicks so much even though they have sucked for two decades). Its why Mike Rice was a huge story, even though I doubt NYC cared any more than any other major city (but NJ is 25% of the NY market and they did care more than other markets).

Certainly it wont get treated the same as say OSU in Columbus or even Cleveland State in Cleveland. There is alot of competition for air time and column inches, and middling RU football isnt going to crack through for the most part. But if and when we are a top 25 team, especially playing in a real conference, we will get alot of air time and page space.

It impacts license renewals for broadcast television and radio stations. It impacts what local ads you see and advertising rates. It impacts what network programming you receive (including college and pro sports). And aside from that, about 1/3 of the population in the NY market is in NJ.

I think what he means is - that the NY media will treat Rutgers as a local program - i.e. with enhanced coverage (more stories, longer segments, specific reporters on the Rutgers beat).

1/4th of NYC market is in NJ I think. The 1/3rd Im pretty sure is the % of the Philly market that is in NJ.
 
I'm pretty sure it is the other way around. But I'll verify this later when I get some time.
Yeah, I think you are right actually. Not sure why I thought it was the other way around. Either way - a significant portion of both markets is in NJ, and Rutgers itself is in one of them.

Yes. Wee all think tha the campus magically moved to the corner of Henry St and Rutgers St.

Meanwhile - we are in the Big Ten for one reason - a reason which has already come true for the Big Ten - because we are in the NYC market and we can garner higher cable carriage fees in the market.
 
Checked the US Census data (2014 population estimate and 2009-2013 avg household estimate).

New Jersey represents 29.8% of the New York market and 27.4% of the Philadelphia market by population (and 29.8% of the New York market and 27.1% of the Philadelphia market by number of households).
 
there is no NJ market. We are part of two different TV markets. Why is this so hard for people to understand?

It has been talked about enough.
 
I dont think Rutgers is in NYC....

I live in New Jersey and my local news is New York City

The local teams are New York teams even though they play in New Jersey....

When Rutgers joined the B1G the 1st billboard to go up was outside the Lincoln Tunnel, a road leading into New York City

When Rutgers was promoting a Ray Rice Heisman Trophy campaign, a billboard was on display in Times Square!!!!

Thats where Rutgers is


Oh yea and on the B1G game of thrones commercial map, what did they put as some of R landmarks??
