Men’s Lacrosse Began Big Ten Play at No. 11 Johns Hopkins Saturday

This puts an end to all the boo birds who predicted we wouldn't win a game in the B1G. Team took a big step forward today. The defense choked off JH all over the field. Their unforced turnovers are an example of what happens when a team faces an opponent who plays with intensity. You begin to take chances when you are being pressed. Add in a hot goalie (ala CS) and you knew RU was not about to blow this one.

Offense is starting to click. Agree with others that we need to keep Sommer on the field. Want to see more time for Murphy as well. Brecht will have them right back on the practice field Monday. All eyes will be on Penn State/OSU tomorrow at the Rodman Center.

Interesting roster notes:

1. Didn’t see Kulas for a single shift today.

2. Attack was Murphy, Kurdyla, and a rotation of Aiello, Peters, and Vorgang at the lefty spot.

3. First midfield was Sommer, Kelly, and Zeller, and they scored 7 of our 11 goals.

4. Second midfield was Mongillo, Richman, and Lawler. Not a ton of production there, but Duke had a nice assist on one of Kelly’s goals.

4. I also didn’t see Austin-Johnstone. Staff clearly tightening the rotation up front by sitting 1 and 10.

5. Saw #20 Kyle Worsnup at backup LSM or close, but no #34 Udovich. Wonder if 34 is hurt.

How about Paolatto. That is an example of what’s great about the transfer portal. One minute you’re playing D3 lacrosse, next minute you’re scoring a goal against #11 John Hopkins in a huge win. Those are the type of memories that last you forever.

Lots of little things. Defense and Stoller were outstanding, dmids in particular. They were bullies out there.

Offensively we played with more confidence, patience, and better ball movement. But the biggest difference was 33% shooting. Converted looks we were getting but missing the last few games. Shooters were changing levels and arm angles and overall were putting more shots on cage. Several games would have been wins if we shot like we did today, all else being equal.

Michigan upsets #1 Maryland 11-10 in 3OT.

BU upsets #3 Army 10-9.

Brown upsets #17 UMass 8-7.

Lehigh loses to Bucknell 11-10.

#6 Princeton beats #12 Harvard, 13-11.

St. John’s beats Hobart 13-11.

#19 St Joe’s beats Providence 16-8.

Loyola loses to Lafayette 11-10.

Great win. Got back to fundamental lacrosse. Moved the ball well. Tightened on d. Played aggressively on o and let the hands fly when given the opportunity. Love that Brecht shrunk the rotation.

Holy crap! Great win! If we can get some offense the rest of the way….

Long time fan here, saw some spirit similar to that of my ‘97 team. Joe Juengerkis is just something special I mean wow. Took a break from my cooperate job in bridgewater to come see the game and the kid is obviously going to the PLL. I have been watching games for the past 2 hours now just to see his goals(thinking I will be doing the same thing for the remainder of my night). The kid is promising and must have a sweet lookin girl to keep him going. LETS GO RU.

What changed today?
D did what they’ve been doing all season and the O just played lacrosse. They stopped thinking and were just playing. Light seemed to go off a bit. Shooting was much better. Both selection and physical act of.

Gotta give the Dmids a special s/o. All of them bowed but Splaine, Jungkerkes and Scalamandre especially were just straight locking guys down. When your short sticks can play man on man d and not get beat, it’s just such a huge advantage.

Scalamdre had a play where he bowed up their big middie Collison. That’s a freshman on senior. Kid is a monster. Looks like a D1 LB.

Couple of other observations:

This I was the most comfortable I’ve seen Colin Kurdyla all season. I’m sure much is due to getting used to playing attack, but he was decisive and forcing the action. I like that he inverted a lot and attacked from up top. Stat sheet says 2-1 but his impact was much bigger. Just missed on a couple and had a few hockey assists that most players would have tried to force and turn it over. Really high IQ plays.

Aiello made really good decisions. He took what was there and didn’t force. If he can keep developing he is going to be a handful. Reminds me of Brian Cameron on the he can carry dodge and has an outside hammer from the lefty spot. And he is only a freshman.

I think this was the game we have been waiting for from Sommer. He’s got since twitch. He looks like a prototypical X attack to me. Would love to see him get a shot there and move Kurdyla back to middie.

It’s been said but worth repeating, our rope unit is the heart of this team. Might be as good as the ‘22 group, which is high praise indeed.

The equally impressive stat is that 7 of the 11 goals came from the first midfield line (3 Sommer, 2 Kelly, 2 Zeller). Only 3 for the attack (2 Kurdyla, 1 Aiello), and 1 for FOGO Paolatto.

I realize the mids and attack guys are fairly interchangeable since we operate our offense mostly from up top, but that first middie line was lights out.

Some of those hockey assists from the attack must be calculated. Murphy didn't have any points but he made some winning plays. Just wasn't his day to score but he is getting more comfortable too. With the way you can invert Sommer from behind and Kurdyla up top, it's starting to look interchangeable. Always said Sommer looks like a prototypical x attackman but if he plays like this at midfield I think you let it ride the rest of the season. Much like Ross Scott against Unc, hopefully this is a coming out party. He clearly has a different burst.

WOW!!! Great win! Congrats to all involved and hopefully health build momentum through the rest of this season and into the off-season and next year! Make it work!

Tied for 1st with OSU and Michigan. Didn’t expect that! If you had that 3 team parlay you would have made some $$$

The hope was our young offense would come around. There is talent there, but it just takes time. For a lot of these guys, this is the first time going through this, for a number of others, the second. They need time to gel and come together, understanding what it takes to win at this level. This isn't high school. These games are all a 60 minute grind. If you want to win, you better play hard for every one of those minutes. I am not sure the offense understood that. But they are learning. There is still a lot to play for this season but man, you can't help but take a peek at the couple of years ahead. We will have to work out some of the defense but some of our SSDM's will still be here and and almost the entire offense. They won't be 18, 19 and 20 anymore. They will be grown men by then. Big difference. Confidence is a huge thing in sports, especially for young guys. Our great teams of the past were always confident because they earned it. Our young guys started doing that Sat. I was most impressed with their stick do it attitude. It was the first time I've seen them all season just keep playing, no heads down, just stick to it. We started slow and they could have went back to that place but they didn't. Runs happen. Lacrosse is a game of runs. They went on one early, no problem. We will go on one ourselves. Sign of a team that is maturing in front of us.

Entire B1G got turned on it's head Sat. Going to be a fun season all the way around. Some real battles coming up. The B1G is not a country club league like the Acc seems. These teams all genuinely despise each other, a few more than some of the others.

Saturday is one of those despise games. There is definitely no love lost between us, OSU, and the two staffs.

That loss to Utah is killing them, or was, but they have the most impressive wins of the season so far.
