Men's Basketball Hosts 2024 Local Media Day

Great articles! I am so pumped for this team and this season. Having said that, after reading all this, I really hope JaMichael Davis stays with us all four of his years, knocks everybody's socks off down the line and molds himself into an All-B1G player before he leaves. GO RU!!!!!!!!

Do not know who Brian Denovelis is. But between him and ohers who have reported on the practice:

IF ... IF Hayes has slimmed down and improved his QUICKNESS, that makes him much less vulnerable on defense, his achilles heel coming into RU.

IF ... IF Hayes has the quickness to play AVERAGE defense ... I will have to change my preliminary forecasted minutes amongst the reserves. If he is not a liability on defense, which has been my assumption, then his minutes as a reserve are only limited by his hotness shooting in any game, and I could see him taking minutes away from both Acuff and Derkack.

I had assumed Hayes might get 10-12 minutes per game - as Pikiell constantly balances the desire to get his 3-point shooting in the game versus the liability he might be on defense. Even if only average defensively due to improved quickness, "average" is not a liability, and I could see him getting 15-18 minutes per game ... but those extra 6-8 minutes have to come out of someone else's minutes ... Derkack and/or Acuff, most likely (Davis should not be as affected, as he plays a different role - PG back-up and defensive demon).

I've been saying all offseason that Hayes (if he's the shooter he's profiled to be) will be playing much more than many were expecting.

You don't bury your best 3pt shooter as the 11th guy.

Also, Davis isn't the backup PG.
If JWill comes out, Dylan runs the offense.
If Dylan is out, JWill runs it.
Davis is 3rd PG.
I would assume there are minimal (zero?) minutes both are out.
Honestly, wouldn't be surprised if he plays the least of Hayes, Derkack and Acuff off the bench.

The podcast opened with how great a PG Dylan was (another thing I've been saying all off season - Dylan is likely to be the primary ball handler and running the offense).

This is the most pleasantly surprising news of the day:

4. PJ Hayes: surprise speedster

PJ Hayes shoots at Rutgers basketball practice

Hayes, who is down to 214 pounds after reporting to campus at 232 in early summer, led every single wind sprint, most by a wide margin.

"That’s him being an older guy and showing how much he cares about the game," Williams said.

I actually always thought that Pike would be able to make Hayes passable on defense. He made Cam Spencer a "plus" defender despite physical limitations, and if Hayes lost all of that baby fat and is now one of the faster players on the team, I have no doubt that Pike will also make him a plus defender. Of course, wind sprints are different from lateral quickness, but it's clear Hayes is an athlete.

You really have to salivate at the thought of Hayes and Martini parked in the corner with Ace and Dylan handling the ball...
